Chapter 3
615 hours
June 6, 1944
By the time we got to CO, the sun was setting which meant the boys at the beaches had landed. 4 companies were stationed on a large barn. These companies were Able, Dog, Baker, and Fox Company.
I asked a sergeant where Baker Company was. He told me they were sitting on back of the barn smoking and talking. I went to the back of the barn and saw them sitting.
“ Hey, look who just survived the jump!” said Cpl. Jack Mendez.
“ Hell, I couldn't get killed with a little fight.” I answered.
“ Hey have you seen Capt. Foley around?” I asked.
“ Heard he was getting to Carentan faster than Hitler.” Pfc. Dan Anthony replied.
“ What about Sgt. Morrison?” I asked again. Sgt. Morrison was the platoon's sergeant.
“ K.I.A.” Cpl. Mendez replied.
“ What?” I questioned in disbelief.
“ Yup, he got called by an MG,” Lt. Adam Boone commented.
“ Bad luck for the guy.” The Lt. added.
“ The new sergeant is Sgt. Joel Gibson.” Pfc. Anthony told us.
“ Baker Company! Get your asses here!” The CO screamed.
“ Not now,” Cpl. Mendez grumbled.
Everybody stood up and went to the front of the barn. He told us to come inside to be told what the mission was.
“ Alright your mission is easy and I expect you to complete is as fast as possible. Got it?” The Commanding Officer said.
“ We need for you to take out a bunker armed with 2 MG42s. It will be a nuisance once we're on our way to Carentan. Then once you take control of it, send a group of soldiers here while the other remaining guard the bunker. Do you understand?” he continued.
“ Sir, yes sir!” We all answered at once.
“ I can't hear you!”
“ Sir yes, sir!” We shouted louder.
“ Alright move out soldiers.” He ordered.
Everybody went outside and got ready. I suddenly found a leg bag on the ground. Luckily enough, it had Thompson rounds on it. I picked up 3 rounds and headed back with the other guys. We walked straight for about an hour.
“ Where is this damn bunker?” Pfc. Anthony asked.
“ About 30 minutes from here.” Lt. Boone was leading the mission.
“ 30 minutes!” Anthony exclaimed.
“ Hey this reminds me when I went hunting with my dad on the woods.” I broke the conversation.
“ He told me to follow his footsteps.” I continued.
“ Hell, he died in quick sand moments later.” I said.
Everybody laughed. But it stopped when we could hear German voices. We were approaching the bunker. I could see it. Then suddenly, all hell broke loose.
Bullets shredded the bush we were hiding in. We then ran for a nearby tree. Soldiers were being mowed down by the machine gun. Bullets wheezed past my face.
When I got to the tree, I could see a soldier putting his hands over his ears and rocking back and forth as bullets were being fired.
“ We need to wait for it to reload.” Lt. Boone suggested.
A moment later, the firing stopped. The lieutenant immediately stood up, ran to the bunker and threw a grenade. It exploded, but a German still remained. The Lt. finished him off with his Thompson.
We had taken the bunker, but we had lost 5 men.
