Chapter 4
807 hours
June 6, 1944
“ I'll stay here, you go back to HQ with Anthony, Tucker, Armstrong, and Jackson.”
We nodded and ran back. There was no resistance on our way. An hour later, we got back to HQ. I immediately talked to CO about the mission.
“ Hmmm. Tell them I'll send 2 squads to the bunker. Then ya'll could withdraw.” He said after I told him.
“ Yes, sir.” I answered. Then we ran back to the bunker.
When we got back to the bunker, it was probably 10 o'clock.
“ What'd he say?” Lt. Boone asked.
“ He says he'll have 2 squads to take our spots then we can get out of here.” I responded.
“ Good,” he grumbled.
Then instantly, we could hear Germans talking nearby.
“ Shit!” exclaimed Cpl. Armstrong. “ There's about 20 of `em.” He reported.
I immediately stood up and sprayed my Thompson instantly killing 6 because they were unaware. Then Jackson backed me up with the MG42. He killed 8 but there were 6 more left. Cpl. Tucker threw a grenade on a rock they were hiding. It sent three Germans flying in the air.
He then got out and killed the rest with his M1 Carbine.
“ Nice job!” Anthony congratulated.
“ Thanks,” Tucker answered.
“ More Krauts!” Armstrong exclaimed. Sure enough, Krauts were gathering on the northeast. But they were immediately stopped dead with the MG42 in our bunker.
“ That's right! Keep coming you bastards!” Jackson said as he kept mowing down soldiers. Then all of a sudden there was a soldier carrying a
Panzerschrek.
Panzerschrek.
“ No! Not those kind of soldiers!” he exclaimed. Fortunately, we had a sniper that could kill anything. He killed the bastard with one shot. Then the Germans retreated.
“ Cease fire! Cease fire!” The lieutenant ordered. We stopped firing as the Krauts retreated. The fight was finally over.
2 hours later, 2 squads took our position. Everybody was relieved.
“ Nice job holding off those Krauts.” 1st squad's sergeant congratulated all of us. He could tell by the dead bodies.
“ Thanks,” Lt. Boone answered.
“ Oh, there's a truck waiting for you.” He reminded.
“ Thanks,” Lt. Boone answered and saluted each other.
We eagerly ran to the truck and sat. We all felt relieved to be out of that bunker.
When we got back To CO we were congratulated for completing our mission. He gave us each a medal. He gave us each a medal for serving in France. But Lt. Boone, Cpl. Tucker, Pvt. Jackson, the sniper received two. But I got three. Lt. got another one for leading the mission. Tucker got another one for Outstanding act of Bravery and Courage. Jackson got another medal for Outstanding Skill in Combat. The sniper got the same on as Jackson's.
I got one for Outstanding Physical And Mental Behavior On The Midst Of Combat. I also got another medal just like Tucker's.
I guess it wasn't such a bad day after all.
