Valaina's eyes grew wide. “L-lori?” he voice was cracked and her eyes were teary. One of her two best friends, her only friends, was dead. Valaina was in complete shock. The frightened look on Lori's face as she died was stuck in her mind. Valaina couldn't think. She couldn't react. Not when Zash ran off, or when one of the attackers tied her hands together and dragged her off, blindfolded.

“Faster you fucking witch.” He said scornfully. He took the handle of a rake and jabbed in her back. Valaina felt pain all over her body. She didn't even know what she did. All she knew was that Lori was murdered, and Zash abandoned her.

The walk through the forest seemed like an eternity. The moon was full and looked close. Stars speckled the sky, lighting up the darkened side of the world. Valaina looked up at those stars. `So innocent.' She thought, `But I am not. I remember now what I've done. Whatever these people are going to do to me, I deserve it.' Valaina looked around her, recognizing the familiar landscape. `Back to the village? So these men are from home. I killed a man from my own town. They should kill me right on this spot….'

The crusaders made it back to the village, where in the town square a stake was set up. Hay was currently being stacked around the center. `I'm going to be burned. A fitting end for a witch I guess.' Valaina thought. All traces of the old, happy, care-free Valaina were gone. In place of that girl is a forlorn faced, pale, austere looking teenage witch.

People threw rocks and knives at Valaina, as two of the attackers drug her to the post. Her own blood surfaced, knives protruding her skin at every angle. But she refused to cry out in pain. No, she would not satisfy the killers of her best friend.

“I hope this hurts you very much bitch.” One man said as he tied her to the death pole.

“I will enjoy every excruciating flame,” Valaina sneered, “You Can Not Kill Me.”

“We shall see.” said the other man as he stepped away from Valaina. “Would you like to do the honor?” The man turned around and asked Lori's mother. The woman had a vengeful look as she took a torch. Tears streamed down her face.

“You were her best friend Valaina.” She told her and spit on Valaina's face. “She trusted you with every fiber of her being and you turn around and kill her. Filthy witch!”

“I suppose if I tell you that it was the bitch over there,” Valaina motioned with her head, “you would burn me anyway?”

“Damn straight.” Lori's mother said as she dropped the torch. The fire moved slowly towards Valaina's feet. Valaina started to panic. When she told the man that he couldn't kill her, she didn't know how it would be possible. `Help me.' Valaina thought, a tear escaping her ducts.

Chant the spell.

What? Was she hearing things?

`What?' Valaina thought

Chant the spell. `Hari elganthe mutu gatoh'. Chant it aloud as you burn.

`Who are you?' she thought

You have known me for a very long time. I am your Familiar. Your guide as you learned how to use your powers.

Valaina thought, `Zash? Zash, is this you?'

Yes. Look up.

Valaina did so. She looked straight ahead. On a hill just a few meters away (past the angry mob) was a boy. He looked to be about eighteen. He had red eyes and fangs. His hair was black and his bangs were near his shoulders. He wore a white robe, embroidered in silver. Valaina thought he was quite handsome for a wolf.

When Valaina met his gaze, she knew she would be alright.

Hari elganthe mutu gatoh” she muttered.

The flames burned her legs

Hari elganthe mutu gatoh”

She couldn't feel the lower half of her body

Hari elganthe mutu gatoh”

Valaina was blacking out

Hari elgan-”

Valaina never finished the rest of the incantation. All the time she burned, she never looked away from her guardian. As she breathed her last breath, she managed a smile. She new everything would be alright.

After all, she was a witch.

Epilogue

A young woman trotted on the back of a horse through the forest in southern Ireland. Close behind, a band of orcs chased after her, shooting arrows, and waving their weapons.

Alahei Ka!” the woman yelled, eyes glowing pink. A force field engulfed her and her horse as they continued to flee the army.
