"I'm not being cheesy," he told her. Sitting beside her he wrapped his arms around her. "A guardian is created by the gods for their warrior. You were born to be his guardian, just as I was born to be Sophitia's."
Elyssa leaned forward to kiss him once more, but Neron held her back. "I'm sorry, it's just a lot to take in," he told her. "After all, my last true memory was of me in Egypt."
"It's okay. I'll wait for you to remember."
He nodded slowly. His head throbbing, though he tried to force the pain back it seemed to be reaching a climax. Something about her presence was making his head feel as if it was on fire. One minute he was sitting there beside her, the next he passed out onto the ground clutching his head.
Mia screamed and grabbed her head. "Oh my God! Make it stop!"
Elyssa ran to the door. "Mia! He needs you!"
Keith moved Mia to her feet. "C'mon," he told her. "Fight through the pain."
Mia took deep breaths as Keith helped her up the stairs. Her head felt like it was splitting open. Finally getting to her apartment, she moved quickly to Neron. Getting on the floor and pulled him to her lap. "Neron...can you hear me?" she said. Her hand went to her head again. "It hurts so much..."
"It's the curse," Elyssa told them. "It must be reacting my presence."
Keith looked at her and then to Neron. "Leave," he told her.
"What?"
"If the curse is reacting to you, maybe if you leave it'll help him recover. Just go downstairs and wait."
Elyssa clearly didn't like the idea, but she nodded and disappeared down the stairs.
Mia stroked Neron's head. "Can you hear me?" She was digging her nails in her scalp trying to take the pain away.
Neron whimpered lightly in her lap. "Mia, it hurts," he hissed. "It feels like someone is taking a hot iron and pressing it to my skull." It was taking all he could not to thrash about in pain.
"I know..." she said. "You have to try and control it...." She could feel the blood caking under her nails. "Please."
He bit his lip and nodded. He wasn't so much controlling it as he was trying to push it back and numb it for her. He winced as he actually bit through his lip while trying to concentrate. His mouth filled with blood, but that was nothing compared to what he felt inside his skull. It took him several moments, but soon his breath started to slow as he began to push the pain deeper and deeper inside him.
Mia took a deep breath and moved her hand down, it covered in blood. She looked down at him. "Are you ok?"
He shook his head slowly. "I'm in control of the pain, but that's about it," he told her.
Mia stroked his head lightly with her other hand. "I guess giving you pain killers wouldn't help much," she said with a light laugh.
He chuckled but instantly regretted it. "No," he said softly, closing his eyes as he nuzzled her lap. "No, I don't think it will."
Keith watched them and slowly slipped downstairs to talk to Elyssa. He shut the door behind him so that neither of them could hear his conversation.
Mia pulled from him. "Don't...do that, Neron," she said and stood. "You have a girl down stairs who has waited a very long time to see you. And I know your heart has longed for her."
Neron looked at her and held his head. "A girl? Who is it?"
"You have some nerve coming back here after all this," Keith muttered as he looked at Elyssa.
"I have been waiting centuries to see him again," Elyssa told him. "You did not honestly think that I would simply stand by and not see him."
"They placed that curse on him because of you; and Perses made it pretty clear that he didn't want you to have anything to do with him when he made that curse. Your presence here could end up killing him. Really killing him!"
"At least he would be free from this cycle of tournament."
Mia's eyes narrowed at Neron. "Elyssa, the girl you love. Duh."
"Elyssa?" He looked down at the ground. "I know that name.... Who is it? How can I love her when I don't know her?"
"Stop playing games! It's not funny when my hearts involved, Neron!" Mia went to the door and took down at Keith and Elyssa. "He's fine, you can come up now."
Neron looked at her, wondering why she was so angry. Elyssa ran up and smiled as she saw him. "Neron! You're okay. You scared me!"
Neron's eyes narrowed. "Do I...do I know you?"
Elyssa's smile fell. "It's me, Elyssa," she said slowly. "We just talked Neron."
Keith frowned and shook his head. "I warned her," he muttered beneath his breath.
"He's joking," Mia said to Elyssa. "Tell her you are joking. You love her! She waited for you! You belong together! Hello!"
Neron look at her and shook his head. "I don't-"
Keith held up his hand. "Before you say anything, sit down while I take these two luscious ladies downstairs." Before either could object he pulled them downstairs, shutting the door behind him.
"What's going on? Why doesn't he remember me? We just talked!" Elyssa was nearly in tears over this.
"I told you that the curse was designed to punish him, but it was also to punish you. You were the reason he acted out so you had to be punished. They couldn't touch you cause you were the winner, but they meant like hell that if you ever found Neron again it wouldn't end well. I'm guessing that you being in the same room as him set off something that fried his brain."
"Well will he remember!?"
"I don't know," he confessed. "Only time will tell."
Mia crossed her arms. "Look, I'm really sorry that you are upset and all and you waited this long to see him again, but...I don't want you around if you are hurting him. If you really care about him, you would understand that too." She sighed. "If you give me your number, I'll call you if he ever comes around, but that's all I can offer you."
Elyssa's eyes narrowed. "I have waited four hundred years to see him. I've watched my family die, my lovers grow old, and my children's children die of old age. Now that he is here again I will not simply leave. He is a warrior, he can deal with a little pain. I know he can."
"Easy girl," Keith said as he lit a cigarette. "What's the pointing in being with him if he spends half the time on the ground in pain?"
"I love him," she told Keith bluntly. "No one else does. He needs me."
Mia fished her hands. She was trying really hard to not hit her but her will power was fading. Her eyes were enraged. "You don't have much of a choice in this matter. He is MY warrior and I am looking out for his best interest. Each pain he feels I feel and when you fuck with him you are fucking with me. Either give me your damn number and wait a little longer or get the hell out of here and don't returned. Those are your only choices!" she snapped.
"That's right," she said softly. "You're bond must be amazing."
"Stop right there," Keith warned. "Unless you wanna get slugged in the face."
Mia grit her teeth. "Give me your damn number before I change my mind!"
Elyssa's eyes narrowed as she reached for her cellphone. "I will be keeping an eye on you," she told her bluntly.
"You are pushing every button I have. And I could care less if you watch me or not. What the hell are you going to do if I forbid him from seeing you? Kill me? Good luck waiting another hundred years," she said and snatched her phone back after the number was in it. "Don't come around unless invited again," she snapped and walked back to her apartment. She slammed the door then turned to Neron who looked completely lose. "Once more...I have a lot of explaining." She pointed to the couch. "Go ahead and sit, I'll fill you in on everything."
Neron quirked an eyebrow as he sat down. "Okay," he said softly. "What is it?" After she explained everything that had happened, he rubbed his head and sighed. "That does make much sense, but I know that you would not lie to me."
Mia sat back. She had also told him about how he froze during a battle because of Elyssa. "Because of all this...I don't think we should have an intimate relationship anymore...for now on, I'm your master and..." she looked away. It hurt to say all this, but if had to be done before she got hurt anymore. "And you are my warrior, nothing more."
"I do not see the reason for that," he told her as he felt his chest tighten. "I do not remember her or anything about her. I can't love someone I don't know."
"But one day, you will remember and I know deep down you still harbor love for her. The day you remember her will be the day my heart breaks if we continue this. I can't keep putting myself through this while knowing that eventually I'll have to let you go. It was easier when I knew that I would have to give you up because of the Gods but now I'll have to give you up to another woman," she said slowly. Wasn't this suppose to be easier? Hadn't she prepared herself for this for days? Had she not told herself it was just the bond? Then why couldn't she look at him? And why was it hurting more than she first thought? "You were willing to spend your life for her, and I know that once you remember her, you will still feel that way. I can't share my heart with you knowing that. It's just not fair."
Neron frowned. His eyes traveled over her while he thought about what she had told him. "If that is what you want. It is not my place to argue."
"Ok..." she said slowly. She stood. "Come on, we are going back to Keith's. It's better if we stay with them."
Neron stood and took her hand. "Mia, I am sorry." His thought went back to what Sophitia had told him. How many females wanted to be with him? How many had he led to believe that they could keep him? That he was something obtainable. A pet, a lover that they could hold onto forever. How many had he lied to?
Mia took her hand back. "Don't. I'm fine," she said and walked down stairs. She wasn't fine. She was far from fine. In fact, she felt like she wanted to die. Breathing hurt, feeling him hurt, knowing that he would always be there hurt.
"You're a terrible liar," he whispered as his chest tightened and pain filled his heart.
Mia grabbed her heart as she got in the car. She lowered her hand when Neron got in. They drove in silence back to Keith's house and she walked in. She handed Keith's keys back to him. "Thanks for letting me use it," she said. Moving next to him on the couch, she rested her head on his shoulder. At least she still had him.
"No problem," he smirked. "Glad to help. We'll have to fend for ourselves tonight. Sophitia is off with her new girlfriend."
Neron sat down in the chair adjacent from them and watched as she curled up next to Keith. What was he to do now?"
"Is it so safe for you to let her leave you?" she asked. She glanced at Neron then at the TV.
"We've got Neron here. He'll be more than enough protection until she gets back in the morning." He looked over at Neron and smiled as he wrapped an arm around Mia.
Neron tensed and looked away.
Mia nodded. "Ok, well...I'll make dinner. What do you want?"
Elyssa leaned forward to kiss him once more, but Neron held her back. "I'm sorry, it's just a lot to take in," he told her. "After all, my last true memory was of me in Egypt."
