Chapter One: The First Light of Morn

Prelude: Midnight

Sarah wakes nude atop an alter, with a beautiful blonde man smiling at her-the smile makes her blood run cold and sends a shiver of fear down her spine. It seems to her that she has seen the man before, and his name is out of her mouth before she can stop it. The man's fierce glare makes her shudder, and she realizes that this man isn't Date-San-her Karate instructor isn't a member of some weird cult, and that makes her feel infinitely better- until she realizes that he is nude as well, except for an unfastened robe. He smiles cruelly and brushes a fingernail down her arm, she screams in helpless response.

Intro: 2:32AM

Detective Tanaka stared at the body. "She was identified as an American tourist?"

His partner, Detective Yoshidata shook his head. "Ie, though you are close. She was the American Ambassador. Her name is-was Sarah Ebullient."

"Shit. What's the American president going to say if his Ambassadors start turning up dead?" Tanaka asked.

"That it's our fault. He'll also probably take some sort of military action if this happens again."

"Take a look at this," Yoshidata said, indicating the marks on her thighs.

"Signs of sexual assault?" Tanaka furrowed his brow.

"Perhaps, but I'm more worried about that bloody thing on her back and breasts." Yoshidata replied, indicating the mark.

"Call me crazy," Tanaka said, "but that looks like a really weird cross."

"Shit…" Yoshidata breathed. "It does…"

"To-Sa! Ka-Sa!" Hikari's childish voice rang through Nasuti's house, waking the desired Nasuti and Seiji-and a few sleepy houseguests-namely, Ryo, Shuu, Shin and Touma. Nasuti, having been the one to go open their door the day before, pushed a groggy Seiji out of the bed and onto the floor.

Seiji sat where he was for a moment, obviously dazed. "It isn't nice to purposely further disorient the already extremely disoriented."

"It isn't nice to make your wife get out of a nice warm bed two days in a row."

"Okay, I'll get the door…"

Hikari was not yet tall enough to reach the high doorknobs, and he made this clear by knocking and shouting, "To-Sa! Ka-Sa!"

Seiji grinned and opened the door.

"For god's sake, get back in here, Seiji, I'm cold!" Nasuti complained.

Seiji only pretended that he couldn't see Hikari. "I don't see anyone! Who knocked on my door?"

"To-Sa! I down here!" Hikari squealed.

Seiji made a show of looking down. "Oh! There you are! I didn't see you down there!"

Hikari toddled inside and climbed into bed with Nasuti. Seiji grinned again and followed.

Shuu grinned widely. "This is good cooking. Ma and Dad are pretty happy with how I handle the restaurant, 'cause I told 'em I can't cook, and so they let me handle business. But, I get to missing your cooking, Nasuti. Same for your cooking, Shin."

Ryo laughed. "Yeah, same here. I'm the cliché man in the kitchen. Hell, I burned water last night."

"And then what'd you put it out with, Ryo? A flame-thrower? 'Cause it smells like someone tried to burn down the whole damn kitchen!" Touma laughed, his blue eyes twinkling.

"Language, Ryo. Watch the insults, Touma…and the language. Thank you, Shuu." Nasuti said, indicating Hikari.

"Language Nazi," Ryo said good-naturedly.

They all laughed.

"Onkle Ryo has a funny laugh!" Hikari giggled.

"I do not!" Ryo said, pretending to be hurt.

"Do too!" Seiji replied.

"Do not!" Ryo whined.

"Do too!" Seiji replied forcefully.

"DO NOT!" At this, Hikari wandered off in search of another biscuit.

"DO TOO!"

"DO NOT infinity!"

"DO TOO INFINITY…PLUS TWO!"

Hikari, who had just arrived again, collapsed in a fit of giggles at the silly looks on their faces. Jun only looked at him and started laughing too. Sadly, the railing Hikari had to hold onto to keep from falling was unstable. The railing toppled over, onto Hikari. The two-year-old screamed in pain.

Seiji was already attempting to remove the wooden bars.

"Hi-kun, don't move. I'll get them off." Frustrated when he got three splinters from one bar, Seiji stood up.

"To-Sa, don't leave me here…" Hikari whimpered.

"I won't," Seiji replied. He closed his eyes, gathered his power and used it to try to rip the bars away from his son in a whirlwind. It didn't work. Seiji gathered all his power, drew some from Nasuti, and used it. The railing was completely destroyed.

=====

This was quick work. If anyone reading this is artistically talented, I would LOVE to have an image of Seiji on the floor, saying "It isn't nice to purposely further disorient the already extremely disoriented." What a subtle request…
