I don't always like to admit it, but I play the pokemon games quite frequently. If anyone needs help with their game, they call me. I don't let anyone know, being a sophomore in high school. But on the last day of school, I was about to be plunged into an adventure that I could only imagine. This is my story.

Ashley and I got off the bus just down the street from my house. The bus pulled off down the road and Ashley walked along beside me unaware of the danger driving up behind us. The neighborhood was completely deserted at this time of day so it was really weird to see an old Ford LTD pull up beside us. Two men jumped out and put rags over our faces. Ashley was the last thing I saw before I passed out.

When I came to, I was in a strange forest at night that looked far from home. Ashley was beside me, still completely unconscious. While I waited for her to wake up, I studied my surroundings. There seemed to be mountains to the north, an almost endless forest to the west, and a town just through the trees. I shook Ashley gently and she came to. She looked as confused as I was.

"W-where are we?" she asked.

"Honestly, I have no idea, Ashley. But there looks like there might be a town over there, we can ask where we are there."

So Ashley and I headed east through the trees. As we cleared the forest I noticed some slightly familiar scenery. There was a huge building with a fence that I seemed to remember seeing somewhere. I walked slowly towards the building and I noticed that there was a sign. It was posted beside the fence and read: Elm Laboratory. My eyes grew wide and I said to Ashley, "You are going to think I'm a dork and it might just be coincidence, but I think I know where we are."

"Really? Where?"

"We are in Johto, where 100 new species of pokemon were recently discovered."

"You have to be kidding me. Are you telling me that we have been dumped into a cartoon?"

"No, it doesn't look like a cartoon. I'm just saying that we could be as far away from home as humanly possible."

"Lets just ask someone. Then we will see if you're right or if this is just coincidence."

So I hit the buzzer of the lab. A voice rang out through the speaker. "Who is it?"

"We need directions, please."

"Could you tell me your names?"

"O…k…David and Ashley."

"I was expecting you; please come in."

Ashley and I looked at each other, both a little weirded out by the situation. How could he have been expecting us if we've never been here? But the gate opened anyway and we walked through it. The building seemed to get ever larger and we walked down the driveway. Finally we reached it after a lot longer walk than we expected. The door opened and the silhouette of a man stood there.

"Please come in."

Ashley and I walked through the door into a well lit lab. Books lined the walls and strange machines were in the back.

"Please sir, could you tell us where we are?" Ashley asked.

"Why, you are in New Bark Town, where the winds of new beginnings blow. I am Professor Elm. Two strange men stopped by this morning and said that two people with the names David and Ashley would stop by this evening and that I should give them this equipment, and this."

He handed us a cd. On the case it said "play me."

"Professor, would you happen to have a cd player?"

"Why yes. Here you go."

I inserted it into the player and pressed play. A deep male voice echoed throughout the lab. "By now I assume that you have figured out that you are in Johto, and you have no way to get home. But do not lose hope. There is a way that you can get home, but it will be no easy task. You have to pass the test of defeating the eight gyms of Johto and at least one of you winning the pokemon league cup. You will be provided the necessary equipment and one pokemon. David, it is your responsibility to teach Ashley how to do this, she has no idea. I wish the best of luck to both of you."

The cd ended just like that. the professor handed us the equipment and one pokeball each. We left our books with him and left the lab.

"Aren't you just a little freaked out by all of this David? We are in a strange place and I have no idea what I just accepted from this weird guy that I've never seen before!"

"Calm down Ashley. Remember, you're with me. I know Johto like the back of my hand and I can identify and find the weakness of nearly any pokemon."

"I'm not sure whether to be relieved or scared, but I'm glad I'm not doing this alone."

"You're very lucky that I got sucked into this along with you. Forgive the expression, but you are about to get a crash course in pokemon training. This is called a pokeball. It houses a trainer's prized pokemon when not in battle. When challenged, throw the pokeball out onto the field and the pokemon will be released. Use the pokedex-that's the thing that looks like a palm pilot-to figure out a pokemon's attacks ahead of time. Call out the attack and let the pokemon do the rest. Do not treat your pokemon ruthlessly or they will dislike you and ignore orders in battle. Treat your pokemon like your friends and they will love you in return."

"That's deep, David. I think I understand. Thanks a ton."

"No problem. Let's get going. Our first stop is Cherrygrove city and we have a long walk ahead of us."

So Ashley and I began to head west. It wasn't long before we ran into a night time pokemon, a hoothoot.

"Ashley, let me take this one, I'm dying to see what pokemon I have."

I threw my pokeball in front of the hoothoot and my pokemon was released. It was a dratini, but there was something was strange about it. I pulled out my pokedex and pointed it at the dratini. A mechanical voice rang out, "Dratini, the dragon pokemon. Mutations of this pokemon were discovered recently that allow the tiny pokemon to evolve in different ways. The mutations are much stronger than the originals. Attacks for the skull-dratini: transform, wrap, twister, and dragonbreath."

By this time the hoothoot was in the air pecking at Skull. He didn't even seem to notice. I yelled out, "Use twister!"

Skull concentrated and a tornado sprung up and sent the hoothoot flying off somewhere. "One win for us, Skull."

"That wasn't very nice, David."

"You can't always be nice in the world of pokemon. Showing mercy on an opponent can sometimes cost you the match."

"Oh, ok. I get it. Treat pokemon like friends, but be ruthless towards your enemy."

I nodded and we continued to walk westward. It was unusually quiet so I decided to look more into my pokemon. The Skull-dratini was 5'11" long, weighing in at 7 lb., and has some very unusual features. The sweet, innocent eyes can change color when it is angry, it has a moth full of razor-sharp teeth, spikes running down its spine, and two spurs where wings are beginning to grow in. I broke the silence and said, "Ashley, why don't you let your pokemon out of its ball. I want to see what it is."

Ashley pulled the tiny ball out of her pocket and tossed it into the air. When it made contact with the ground it opened and the pokemon was released. A small bipedal lizard emerged. It was very unusual so I opened the pokedex and pointed it at the small pokemon. The mechanical voice rang out, "Floratox, the baby dino pokemon. This small but dangerous pokemon will eventually evolve into a mutation of two pokegods, solaria and toxin. Beware the spikes, the neuro-toxin contained within is extremely powerful and guarantees a knockout. Attacks for Floratox: poison stab, vine whip, dragon rage, and bite."

"What a powerhouse. Remind me never to challenge you to a battle."

"Why not, he is such a cute little thing I don't know how you can be so scared of him."

"Did you not hear the pokedex? This pokemon is very powerful and will evolve into an even more powerful pokemon that is a mutation between two of the fabled pokegods! Oh, wait it says that the floratox can withdraw it's spikes so that makes it safe to pick

up."

Ashley picked up the small lizard and hugged it. She then returned him to his pokeball.

"Ashley, I think we should camp here for the night. we can continue our journey in the morning."

"Good idea, David."

We unrolled our sleeping bags and set up camp. Ashley went to gather firewood while I set up the rest of our supplies. I set up the pot for dinner and organized the ingredients. Ashley was gone for quite a while and I was beginning to get worried. Finally after fifteen minutes of waiting Ashley arrived back at camp with an armful of firewood. "Thank God you're back. what took you so long?"

"I found a pokeball in the forest and not that long afterwards I ran into a hoot hoot. I managed to capture it in my spare pokeball and found a huge pile of firewood not far off. Fortune has smiled upon us, David."

"Cool, I'm glad you found a hoot hoot because we are going to need it. I'll explain in the morning. For now, lets just eat and go to sleep."

Ashley placed the firewood under the pot and I got it lit. I prepared our dinner, a wonderful vegetable soup. We ate it slowly in the firelight, catching up on the past couple weeks and sharing stories. Once it was finished I put the fire out, we curled up into our sleeping bags and went to sleep.
