“Reigning Over All”

A heavy breeze stabbed at his back as he made his way through the thick forest on the edge of Viridian City. Even though he could have easily teleported himself to Pallet Town, he decided to walk, figuring that he needed it.
Spiky brown hair waved back and forth as he walked, and squinted eyes stared straight ahead as if focused on something in particular. He listened as foliage crunched under his thick boots.
Soft sunlight filtered down through the upper canopy of trees and appeared in splotches upon the footpath.
Nineteen-year-old Brock kicked a pebble a head of him and flicked his wrist. The pebble floated into the air and began to drift around his waist in circles. More pebbles joined it a little while after.
It had been a year since he last saw Ash, the black haired teen looking pale as he tended to his sick mother. Cordelia Ketchum had fallen victim to a disease called Synapsias. Before the teens could figure out what kind of disease it was, Professor Oak had died, leaving Tracey Sketchit his laboratory, so he could finish his research. The green haired man tried his best to find out all he could, but to no avail.
Brock frowned at the thought of Ash’s mom dying. He would probably never get over it. The man’s rough face gained a look of determination. He and Misty would be there for Ash for as long as he needed them.
The ring of pebbles that circled his waist suddenly dropped when he sensed a life form heading toward him. He tensed his arms and waited.
An off-color Pidgeotto swooped down at him, its eyes flaring a bright golden red. Brock’s eyes narrowed malevolently as a nasty dark gray aura surrounded his body. He held up his hand as the Pokemon neared, and a light gray fireball shot out. The insignificant ball of gray was absorbed into Pigeotto’s body and it imploded. The tall Rock Master shielded himself as blood and entrails heavily rained down upon him.
“Aggressive Pidgeotto?” he asked himself.
He passed on the walk and decided to teleport to Pallet.

Angry orange and red flames permeated the sides of the buildings as people screamed and ran around. A huge, muscle-bound man and his two Pokemon were blocking Pallet Town’s only exit. A woman crawled up to the trainer and choked back a sob.
“Please! Why are you doing this?” she shouted, her sob coming out. The man looked at her and smiled evilly. He flicked his hand to the right and the Onix beside him began to growl, the deep sound reverberating throughout its whole body.
The woman scrambled backward in a fruitless attempt to escape, when the trainer shifted his weight and instructed his Onix to surge forward and grab her with its tail.
“Crush the stupid bitch!” he shouted. The woman screamed, bits of dust and rock flying into her mouth, as the many sections of the rock Pokemon’s body ground together. The agonizing scream died down as Onix dropped the crushed body.
The man, satisfied, smiled and nodded his approval. He waved his other hand. “Go and have fun my pets.” He said with a laugh.
“What the hell are you doing!” came a shout from behind. The huge trainer turned and glared at the man behind him.
“How did you get pass me?” the man asked angrily. The smaller man’s body was instantly surrounded by a dark gray aura that made his spiky hair sway in the artificial wind that was created. The trainer got a look of fear in his eyes as he realized what the younger man was. “Element...Master...” he stuttered.
Brock smiled and nodded as he clenched his fists. As soon as the first drop of blood appeared, he thrust his hands forward. The trainer’s Pokemon exploded into bits of shrapnel and blood. Brock stopped glowing as he grabbed a Pokeball from his belt.
“Go Steelix.” In a burst of silver energy, a giant steel Pokemon appeared. “Use Wrap.” Then came the horrible sound of screeching metal as Steelix wrapped its thick metal tail around the trainer’s body. The trainer screamed as one of his ribs suddenly cracked.
“Brock!” came a shout from behind the wall of steel. The Rock Master peered around his Pokemon. His narrow eyes widened.
“Ash! You’re okay! Where’s your mom?” he shouted. Ash’s facial expression darkened as he ran around Steelix. “Don’t tell me she’s...” he stopped his sentence as his eyes dropped to look at the burned vegetation. The dark gray aura that had surrounded him before restored itself and his eyes burned with anger. Ash’s aura matched his own in darkness, but with a tinge of every color in the spectrum, signifying his rank as Master of all Elements. The trainer screamed as Steelix tightened its grip, and more ribs cracked. He coughed as a steady stream of blood flowed down his chin.
The two masters turned to the trainer, as their auras seemed to lattice into one. His eyes widened as they approached. Brock smiled as he cleared his throat. “What’s your name?” he asked. The trainer choked back a cry of fear as he tried to answer. He coughed up more blood, but couldn’t say a word.
“Steelix, ease up on him just a little bit.” Brock said. Steelix nodded its massive head and moved as the trainer let out a sigh of aggrieved relief. “My ... name’s ... Grudo.” He wheezed. “Who sent you here? Why did you burn down Pallet? Why did you kill my mother?” Ash shouted, his multi-colored aura flaring brighter.
“Ash calm down! I know how you feel, but this guy just got his lungs punctured by his ribs. We need to ask him one question at a time.” The Rock Master said. Ash looked at him and nodded. Grudo seemed to smile as his eyes glazed over.
“I was ordered to burn ... down Pallet.” He said weakly. His head slumped over, confirming his death. Ash angered. “Don’t die now!” he shouted. Brock put his hand on his companion’s shoulder and shook his head. The younger man punched the ground beneath him, cracks etching along the surface and spreading out from where his fist made contact.
“Ash! I found it!” came a familiar shout. Tracey ran around Steelix, as the steel Pokemon dropped the now dead Pokemon trainer. The green haired man looked at Grudo, as his eyes seemed to widen. “What did you find?” Ash asked. Tracey nodded.
“I found the cure for Synapsias!” he exclaimed. Brock and Ash looked at each other, and then back at the excited young man, their eyes both holding equal sadness. “What? What happened?”
“Mom is dead.” Ash replied quietly. “Oh my god...” Tracey breathed. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a small drop of water flew through the researcher’s chest, blood flowing freely from the new wound. “Ash?” he stuttered as he fell over.
“Tracey!” Brock shouted. He kneeled down and held up the young man’s head. “I’m sorry you guys. Here’s the antidote...” a quivering hand reached up with a vial full of dark putrid-looking liquid. Another drop of water flew through the vial, spilling the contents onto the ground, only to be soaked up. Tracey’s eyes dimmed and then closed. Brock trembled with anger.
“Damn it!” Ash shouted.

The bright red-orange sun came over the horizon and gave new light to the destroyed town. Small fires still burned in some places, but other than that, everything was still and lifeless. A chilling wind blew around, putting small fires out as it went. Bushes moved with Pokemon that came to investigate the new smells. A small rat-like Pokemon snuck out of the brush and ran over to where a charred body lay. The Rattata squeaked and ran off.
From another bush, came a human wearing a dark leather jacket and blue jeans. His white tee shirt was ripped in several places, indicating that he’d been fighting with something. He ran over to Tracey’s lifeless body and positioned him over his right shoulder. He then took off at full speed toward Route 1.

Ash opened his eyes. He must have fallen asleep last night. He stood up and looked around. He was in his room, or what used to be his room. The dark-headed teen looked around for Brock, but only found the room barren. He stood up and ran out of the door.
“Brock!” he shouted. He ran down the stairs and into the kitchen, but no one was there. He decided to search outside, since there wasn’t much house left.
“Ash! Over here!” came a feminine shout. A red haired woman waved her hands back and forth to get his attention. Standing beside her was a woman with teal hair. Ash’s mood elevated slightly upon seeing them. He ran over and smiled weakly. “Hey Misty, Duplica. What’s going on?” he asked.
“Brock contacted us and told us what happened. When we got here to confirm Tracey’s death, his body was gone.” Misty said. Ash looked down at the dried puddle of blood where Tracey’s body had been the night before. He frowned and looked around the surrounding area. “Maybe a bunch of aggressive Pokemon were hungry?” Duplica muttered, mostly to herself.
“Eeww...Duplica. That was uncalled for...and totally gross.” Misty muttered. “Sorry.” The blue haired woman stated as she clutched her Ditto to her chest. She stared at Ash fixedly, as if something was troubling her.
“Where’s Pikachu?” she asked. Ash stared back in the direction of his house. “He’s packing.” He stated simply. Just as that was said, a small yellow electric mouse came grunting over the hill. Misty stared at Brock confusedly.
“If it wasn’t aggressive Pokemon...then someone must have taken his body. But my question is who?” she said. Brock shrugged his broad shoulders. Ash glanced down at his struggling Pokemon and smiled. “I told you to pack only the necessities.” He said.
“Pi pikachu.” The yellow mouse said hotly. Ash bent down and picked up the heavy brown pack. He placed it around his shoulders and turned toward the others. “Where to now?” he asked. Duplica placed a slender finger on her chin in thought.
“Well, we have to find out who took Tracey’s body. We also have to find out who ordered Pallet to be burned to the ground.” She said. Misty nodded.
“There’s a man in Viridian who knows a lot about Rocket activity.” She said. Duplica stared at the red head skeptically. “What makes you so certain that Rocket is behind this?”
“It’s Team Rocket.” Misty said bluntly. Duplica smiled and tilted her head to the side, letting her blue hair fall over her left shoulder. “You’ve got a point.” She said.
“Dit!” the magenta blob said in agreement. Duplica smiled and patted it on the head. Brock sighed heavily and turned around to survey the area. “We’d better go. I sense hostility headed toward us.” He said. Misty cringed. “Antagonistic Pokemon...” she muttered. Pikachu jumped onto Ash’s shoulder and stared at the field to their right.
“Pika...” he said with a touch of foreboding. Ash nodded. “Are you all ready to go?” he asked. The others nodded, and with a flash of multicolored light, they were gone.
