Chapter 4

Lance found Ash huddled in a wet little ball, apparently he had landed in a puddle of water and transformed.
His clothes were nowhere to be seen.
Sighing, Lance dried the sodden cat with a towel. “Come on, let's go home.”
Ash shook his head. < Don't want to. She's still there. >
< Misty is mean… >
< I'm just glad I'm not married to her. But see, what if she wants to get engaged to me? >
< Oh? >
< I overheard her talking to herself… >
“I see.” Lance nodded. “At least this cures your Neko-ken though, right?”
< Hai! >
They walked home.

It was a bad way. Misty was fighting Ranma and losing, according to Lilac it was the third match they'd fought.
Oh well.
A week passed peacefully enough, with no crazy challengers or challenges.
Then… there was… Jane.

She showed up at the dojo one bright Sunday morning.
“Ranma Saotome, where are you?!”
Ranma eeped. “Oh no…”
“What's wrong; is she your girlfriend or something?” Rose was feeling a tad jealous…
“I heard from Pop that I was engaged to her at age eight for a bowl of rice and pickled mackerel.”
“WHAT?!”
“I know, he's crazy.”
“Tell me now.” Ash muttered from where he and Lance were playing gin rummy. Lance took advantage of Ash's distraction to lay down three aces and bomb him. “I believe I win again.”
Ash sighed. < Oh well. >

Ranma growled, and swiftly defeated Jane.
One more fiancée down…
Why did he have so many? It was his father's fault! That old man…
Oh, he was a pain.
But it had to be taken care of eventually.
Then, the next day, Carla showed up. This time, she was chasing Ash. There was a rather nasty scene.
Sufficed to say that she would be taking physical therapy for a while.
“That was cruel.”
“Was it?” Lance asked sleepily.
His twin dragonair curled around the room protectively. Keeping him safe, keeping them safe, was their duty.
Lance shrugged, as Ash kissed him.
It was unfortunate that the door was open.

“Eek!” Misty screamed, dropping her stack of bricks she had been intending to practice with.
“HENTAI!”
Ash moved before she blinked and tapped the `Instant forgetfulness' spots on her head. < Hopefully that'll work. >
Misty picked up her bricks, wondering why she had dropped them, and continued on.
< That was close… > Ash gasped.
< We'd better do this at night when there aren't any prying eyes then. > Lance said.
< Hai, I guess you're right. >
They began doing their Geometry homework, the mood ruined.

“So, I guess Ash is the scholar and I'm the warrior.” Ranma said, when he saw them. He laughed. “Don't study too hard, little brother.”
Ash frowned a little but nodded.
Ranma didn't see. “Well, one genius martial artist in the family is enough, so don't worry! I'll carry on the Saotome Clan. I'm so glad Rose chose me though.”
“Hai.”
Ranma bragged for a minute or two longer, and then went downstairs to do more sparring.
“I…”
“It's hard, isn't it?” Lance asked.
Ash nodded. < He's always better… >
“Shh…”
Ash calmed down slightly as Lance embraced him from behind. < But I choose you. >
< Lance-chan… >
< You're the one I love, not him. Remember, you still have me. >
< H-hai. >
Ash didn't say his mind, but it was evident. * You're all I have… *
That was true, very true, and sadly pathetic in its evident truthfulness, but it shone with inner light.
Pity.

“I'm a cat.”
“Hai; that you are.” The sixteen-year old shook his head. “Would you rather be a girl like your brother?”
Ash shook his head furiously, and hissed when Genma dumped a kettle of cold water on him. < What was that for? >
The man couldn't hear him.
His _father_ ignored him!
“Ranma, Ranma, speak to me son!”
< He doesn't care about me, does he, Lance-chan? >
< No. > Lance agreed, holding Ash.
< But you care. >
< Hai. >
While Genma fawned over Ranma in a manner completely unlike his normal self - Nodoka would have his head if their son died - Lance tried to cheer the thirteen-year-old up.
