Giovanni laughed as he observed Ash's horror. “It is only natural that the boy might feel some nervousness after meeting me. It has been a long night, and emotions tend to swirl when they get tired.” He told Alfred. “You may leave now.” Alfred bowed and left, closing the doors behind him, while Giovanni moved closer to Ash. “You're 17 right? Well I brought champagne, so if anybody asks, you're 18.” He smiled as he opened the bottle of wine and fetched two glasses, but Ash saw through it.

“All right, what have you done with the real Chairman?” He demanded.

“I am the real Chairman. I have been for years.”

“Then how come you made sure Alfred left so soon? Worried he'd recognize you?”

“Please. I asked Alfred to leave because we can both agree that he contributes nothing to our conversation, and is nothing but an idiot who deserves far less than to be your escort, but he is of no importance.”

“You're right, but the real identity of the Chairman is.” Ash demanded.

“Very well then, you don't believe me. Excuse me a second.” He finished his drink and moved towards the telephone. He hit a few buttons. “Hello, yes this is Giovanni. The Champion and I are going to go for a meeting with the public at the stadium tomorrow at 1:00. Is that clear? Yes? Good. Goodnight.” He moved towards Ash smiling. “See, we'll be out tomorrow in front of 100,000 people. If you don't believe me now, you will then. Now sadly, we have much to discuss, but only until tomorrow night to discuss it. Then I'm going back to Celadon City, but for now, how have you been?”

Ash didn't want to talk at first, but gradually realized that making small talk wasn't nearly as bad as sitting here while Giovanni talked. “I've been fine.”

“Are you happy to be Champion?”

“Well I was. But they keep talking about my office and my responsibilities. What does that mean?”

“Oh you know, boring things. Meeting with people, conferences with the other members of the Elite Four, speeches against cruelly treated Nidorans or whatever seems to be the topic of the day. Of course, you also have a seat on the Council of Gym Leaders, meaning you decide on updates of Gym rankings, how they should be held, on whether or not to have budget cuts. It's really an office job, and you only have it for a year unless you can win it back. And there's nice pay, but financial matters won't interest you I assume.”
“I'm actually getting paid for this?” Ash said excitedly. This was good. Being a trainer didn't pay well, and both he and his mother needed the money.

“Of course. Who would want to be the champion without finances to back it up? The current rate is 300,000$ a year, plus we pay for whatever you want to do education-wise, and provide you with health care.”

“300,000?” Ash gasped. “That's a lot of money! But do I get time off? Will I get to visit my friends?”

“Who? You mean that breeder and the Cerulean leader? Well, I imagine you'll see that Mosty or Mistry on the council, but the other one I don't know. I suppose if you wanted you could give him a job working in the league, but they don't matter. What matters is that you now hold a power far greater than any Governor. Trainers all over the country look up to you, and you can't let that go to waste. Follow me Mr. Ketchum, and I imagine you'll find your life far more interesting than being outside in a wood while trying to get a badge. Welcome to politics Ash, and enjoy your stay. I'll see you tomorrow for breakfast.”

Giovanni put on his bowler hat and took his cane, and left the room smiling. Ash stared at the door for fifteen minutes afterwards, wondering what had just happened.
