Chapter 6: Hate

Lance and Ash sat on a grassy knoll together, silently.
“I missed you.” Ash told him.
“I'm sorry.”
“Don't be, it'll hurt more that way.” Ash said, allowing the other trainer to hold him while he cried silently. “But why?”
“I didn't want to die, Ash.”
“So you took the potion and where did you go?”
“Whirl Islands.” Lance scrutinized Ash with those same bloody eyes, although the color softened somewhat. “Your story was… true.”
Ash gasped. “You took the test of Dragon Mastery and passed?”
Lance nodded quietly, still holding the trainer in his arms. “In a way…”
“Lance-chan…”
Lance's eyes widened slightly. * Wait a minute… *
Lugia had mentioned something that had probably been important about guardians and Chosen, but now it was so hard to remember. That potion had done something to the memories too…
Trust your own instincts, though. And Fly.

They didn't move for a long time.
“I still love you.” Ash whispered quietly.
Lance turned so he could see into the trainer's eyes, before relaxing slightly. “I know.”
Ash rested his head on Lance's chest, not moving, as the stars went by.
“Won't your parents look for you?”
Ash shook his head. “They know I need some quiet time.”
“Ah…”

“Won't the potion wear off?”
Lance smiled wryly. “Until Surge dies or changes his mind about the engagement, I'm afraid not.”
“Interesting.” Ash mused. * Hm… *
“However, as he is currently tracking an irascible Zapdos, it could very well be sooner than later.”
The faintest whisper of a smile showed on Ash's face, before Lance kissed him. It wasn't gentle, it was harsh like winter, but he didn't care.
Arms slid around him, wrapping him comfortably in them. He tucked his head into the hollow of Lance's neck and smiled.
It was still comfortable.

They could be patient.
They waited.
Three moons passed, and then one morning, he climbed out of bed and knew. She was back to normal.
She kissed him good morning softly.
He twisted so he was facing her and smiled. “Aishiteru.”
“Aishiteru, little shadow's child.” She replied, before she wrapped her arms around him.
After that, everything was fine.
It wasn't perfect. Nothing ever is perfect. But it was close enough, and if this was illusion, he didn't care.
It was better to have a peaceful illusion then angered reality.
Preferable to have fantasy over glaring truth…
He was happy enough, and it was better than what had been left behind. That was the way things were.
Finito.

In the real world…
“Gone.” The doctor explained to a stricken Mrs. Ketchum. “He's slipped past the comatose state into death, ma'am.”
“But it's only been a day!” She said frantically.
“At this stage of damage, every moment counts.” The professional consoled.
Misty frowned. * He still owes me that bike… how can he die like this?! *
“Is there no way to bring him back?”
“No, I'm sorry.” The man said apologetically. “But that is impossible, Ma'am. I really am sorry, but there was nothing to be done.”
“Can't you- can't you clone or something?”
“That is strictly against the rules, and the procedure has only a 2% success rate.” Jonathan tried to calm Mrs. Ketchum down, but it took a long time to do so.
Still…
As he reflected on the moment years later with his daughter Vicky, if it hadn't been for this Ash Ketchum, the woman - now his wife - would never have occurred.
