Explosion.
“You want to do what?” Lance asked, when she brought the subject up to him.
“I want to be one of the 8 main gym leaders. We should change it to nine.”
Lance coughed. “I'm afraid that isn't a possibility.”
“Why?”
“Because. There must be 8 main gyms in each region only.”
“Why?”
“Because. There must be 8 main gyms in each region only.”
“Fine! I'll replace someone!”
“Also, Lavender is quite a small town, hardly anyone passes by.” Lance continued. “Why have a gym there?”
Candice scowled. “So you won't let me become a new leader?”
“You're already a gym leader. Just not an important one.” A different voice cut in.
Karen walked into the room. “I have the report for you.”
“Thank you.” Lance said, taking the papers. “Now then…what value would your gym hold, first of all? Chuck already runs a fighting gym. Giovanni has a ground gym. Whitney has a normal gym.”
“So?”
“Thank you.” Lance said, taking the papers. “Now then…what value would your gym hold, first of all? Chuck already runs a fighting gym. Giovanni has a ground gym. Whitney has a normal gym.”
“So?”
“And the second thing…” Lance continued, his voice dropping lower. “You have to be a Master.”
“A what?”
“A master of one element.”
With that, Karen escorted her out.
“What did he mean?!”
Karen rolled her eyes at the younger girl's frustrated expression. “You'll find out soon enough.”
Her houndoom barked.
“I know; I'll feed you as soon as I'm finished.” Karen turned back to Candice. “The road to pokemon mastery is fraught with peril. Beware.”
With that, she walked away.
“What was that all about?” Candice complained. She looked at her pokemon. Jigglypuff, Machoke, and Sandslash all stared back quite cluelessly.
“Guess I'll ask someone else…”
Shrugging, Candice jumped on her Jigglypuff, which blew itself up and floated towards Brock's gym in Pewter.
He would answer.
She found Brock and his rock-type pokemon sleeping.
“Brock?”
Brock woke up, hearing a female's voice. “Candice! What brings you here?”
“Well…” Candice twiddled her fingers as she put on a cute smile. “What's a master?”
“A master is someone who is very close to their pokemon and can use their powers.” Brock said.
“Oh!”
“Like me, I'm a Rock Master.” Brock said. His rock-type pokemon all nodded.
“You can only be a master of one type?”
“Yes, unfortunately.”
“Darn…”
“Yes, unfortunately.”
“Darn…”
Candice looked at her pokemon. She only had three and didn't want to let any of them go!
“But I'll tell you a secret.”
Brock lowered his voice. “If you're a dark master, like Karen, you can have more.”
“Oh!”
“Good luck!”
Candice kissed Brock, glad for the information, and left, Brock going heart-eyed in a starry daze.
Candice set off grimly, back to ask Karen.
Karen was feeding her pokemon when Candice dropped in the ceiling.
“Nice to see you so soon.” Karen said. “What do you want?”
“How did you become a dark master?”
“How did you become a dark master?”
“I took the test.”
“What?”
“The test.” Karen explained patiently. “You need to take a test.”
“Oh! I'll do it!”
Murkrow laughed derisively, and was joined by Gengar.
“What's so funny?!”
“Oh, you poor child… you've never even seen the test of Dark Mastery…or Dragon's Mastery… or Shadow Mastery… and those are among the worst.”
Karen's eyes crinkled up as she tried to stifle her own laughter.
Angrily, Candice stomped off. “I'll find it myself then!”
And from the shadows, a pair of golden eyes watched.
“Let her try, aniki…”
“Very well, this should prove amusing…”
“Very well, this should prove amusing…”
