The Elements of Tennis
Chapter Thirty-Five
The boy runs off as the girls head inside to finally have a peaceful night.
"You know, one of these days I'm gonna have to find a guy that's not afraid of you," Kittaku smiles as she closes the door.
"In your dreams. You find a guy like that and I'll make him fear me," Hikaji declares.
"What if you can't?"
"Well, in that case, he'll be too old for you so there's nothing to worry about."
"What if he's just the right age for me?"
"Then I'll just have to make you marry him because there's probably only one person in the universe whose your age and dumb enough to not know to fear their own demise," Hikaji teases.
"But, what if I don't like him that way?"
"You'll learn to like him. Didn't you ever hear? Marriage has nothing to do with love; it's all about one thing, one thing that you're not old enough to get involved with yet: reproduction!"
Meanwhile, at the street tennis court, Fuji and Akari prepare for their match.
"Are you sure I have to use my new racket?" Akari asks with pleading eyes as she unzips the compartment in her bag where she keeps her racket. "I don't want to get it dirty."
"Did you hear that, guys?" an onlooker comments. "She doesn't want to get her racket dirty."
The crowd starts to laugh.
"Shut up, it's a real nice racket. AND I WORKED MY ASS OFF TO BUY IT!" Akari shouts at them.
"Get off the tennis court, babe," someone shouts out.
"What was that?" Akari growls, her eyes glowing for a moment.
"Don't think too much of it," Fuji smiles gently at her, instantly calming her anger. "Let's just play. How about we just play half of a match, the first one to get two games wins."
"All right," Akari smiles, "but when I win you have to take me out to dinner."
"Fair enough," Fuji nods his head.
With that, Akari pulls out her beautiful, un-smudged completely white racket.
"Isn't it pretty?" she asks as she holds it up for Fuji to admire.
"Yes, I guess," Fuji responds politely as he pulls out his normal racket and heads onto the court.
"Man, how does she keep that racket so white?" the onlookers mumble to each other.
Akari smiles with pride as she struts onto the court and prepares to serve, after all, ladies go first.
The first two games go by, and just like with Shinzoo, Akari can only tie with Fuji so far.
"You're good," she pants to Fuji with a smile.
"So are you," he compliments.
"Thanks. Isn't it a miracle that my…AHH!" she screams as he eyes land on the brand new dirt smudge that has appeared on her white racket, destroying the perfected pureness of the beautiful racket. "How…did…why…it was…so…pretty…why…my…I…this can't be…this isn't…IT'S NOT FAIR!"
With that, Akari looses it, unable to control herself as the tears explode from her eyes and she starts swinging the racket around wildly.
"IT'S JUST NOT FAIR! WHY IS THERE A SMUDGE ON MY RACKET?! HOW DARE YOU SMUDGE IT! IT WAS SO YOUNG! AND SO BEAUTIFUL! HOW COULD YOU?! HOW CAN ANYONE BE SO CRUEL?" Akari shouts out as her eyes glare at Fuji in betrayal. "I HATE YOU! I COULD NEVER BE YOUR GIRLFRIEND! EVEN IF YOU BEGGED ME FOR A BAJILLION YEARS I WOULD NEVER BE THE GRILFRIEND OF SOMEONE SO CRUEL! I HATE YOU FUJI SYUUSUKE! I HATE YOU!"
Fuji stands shocked, not knowing quite what to do about all of this. One moment, the two of them were having a friendly match, enjoying each other's playing styles, the next she's shouting at him, and….
Wait a minute, did she just…break up with me? he thinks as his brain catches up with her words.
By then, it's too late, Akari has fled the area, zooming down the stairs faster than anyone can keep up with, leaving only a trail of her tears flowing behind her, she hadn't even thought clearly enough to grab her bag before running off.
"Whoa, total burn, dude," the onlookers state in sympathy. "That sucks."
Fuji walks over and grabs both his and her bags before heading off after Akari.
"Go get her, dude!" the guys shout.
"Good luck!" the girls cheer him on. "True love will conquer everything in the end!"
