Exiled To Avernum :

Chapter 1: Into The Pit

Exile: the act or instance of being thrown out of ones county or home. Or--a person
in Exile.

Dear Diary,

We are never going to see sunlight again. We will never breathe fresh air, or be
warm or feel safe.

That it our punishment. For our crimes, we are to be thrown into a magical
portal and banished to Avernum, never to return What was our crime. Ha!!! Not
what you might think.

Not murder, or arson, or crimes against other people. No, our crime was against
the Empire, ruled buy the cruel Emperor Hawthorne. We may have spoke out
against an unjust law, or angered some politician, or we may have just been
misfits. Whatever.

Not being able to fir in is a crime in the Empire. This, we are being sent to
Avernum. It is not a different land. After all, the Empire controls the entire
surface of the world. All four continents have completely submitted to its rule.

No, Avernum is a series of caverns far below the surface of the work. It is a dark,
subterranean prison, a place where exiles like ourselves spend the rest of their
lies, far from the light.

What is it like there? Nobody on the surface knows. All they know is that it
is dark, and unpleasant, and that it is a place regarded only with fear.

Some people believe that there is no air, warmth, or food, and death comes with
merciful speed. Others believe that there is enough food to enable Exiles to
endure a miserable, wormlike existence. Until, of course, the monsters the monsters you.

And a few believe that Avernum is a paradise. A subterranean land of
pleasure and relief, and of freedom from the Empire's iron rule. People mad
enough to believe Avernum is a paradise soon end up there themselves.

Nobody really knows what it is like. Nobody really wants to know. But soon, we
will. There is no appeal to the judges decision.

Reign Of The Empire Year 199
Artizane, Usagi
Class B Sorcerer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Usagi closed the book and slipped it into her pocket when she heard the sound of
the Empire's guard's boots clanging on the stone floor. Those damn bastards had
taken everything away from her, and she'd die before letting them have her last bit
of freedom.
"Times up little worms. You're going to where you belong." Usagi felt
Ranma jolt awake beside her when the cold, ugly voice of Mamoru Chiba, captain
of the Empire Army section A, echoed through the cells.
It was bad enough that they were being exiled, but the fact that they were being
sent down by their arch-rival made it even worse.
Ranma glared darkly at Mamoru as two lower guards pulled him and Usagi
to their feet by their heavy chains. If he could he'd knock son of a bitch back to the
hell he came from.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Portal Keep~~~~~~~~~~~~~```

Uwen Laris was a good man. He had a wife, two children, and got paid a
steady alary. He gave to the poor, and worked for the rich.

They called him the " Executioner.". Why? Because it was his hob to throw
people into Portal Avernum, and then fill out the paperwork. He was the one that
sent people to their doom.

Uwen sighed, being a bad guy was just so hard! Maybe he should have
taken the job as a blacksmith instead. Then he wouldn't have to worry about
ruining, mostly, innocent people's lives.

"Speaking of innocent," Uwen thought as he shifted through the folders on his
desk," I wonder who the next victims are?"

Flipping through the folders he pulled out the profiles he was looking for.

Special Skills and Traits In Avernum

On the surface and in Avernum there are some occasions where
you will meet someone with a special skill, or "ability". Here's a
list of the abilities and what they do.

Great Renown : It takes a lot of hard work to be a Great Renown. A lot of ass kissing too. But just
because because one is popular on the surface, doesn't mean they are popular in exile. In fact, it's
usually quite the opposite.

Nimble Fingers : You simple cannot be a thief without it. Natural aptitude for tools, traps, and
delicate machinery is important for those who live off of other peoples loot.

Beast master : It takes one with a pure heart to become a beast master. Animals must truely love
you before they will follow you around and protect you.

Strong Will : A skill that can take years of practice to create. Not just anyone can protect their mind
against magikal powers that cloud and read the mind.

Good Education: Good Education is rare in the Empire, and even rarer among those sent to
Avernum.

Toughness: Not an actual skill, but still considered a trait. Bodies are resilient to most poison, and
have great strength.

Fast On Foot: All Rogue who don't have this trait wish they did. It allows great reaction and
reflexes, as well as marvelous agility. And this isn't just the results of a Haste spell, this is the real
thing.

Natural Mage: While some people learn and study magik, these Mage have known it since birth.
It's as ingrained as walking and breathing. Although the more dangerous and advanced skills have
to be looked over before being perfected, anything easier than that is a piece of cake for these magik
users.

Elite Warrior: Trained. in the ways of war since birth, while other children were learning to walk
these warriors were learning to hold a knife. All soldiers of the Empire army have this skill, but
some are more advanced than others.

Divinely Touched: Divine blood is seen very rarely in these times. Giving it's user several special
abilities, it's quite often that the select few with this trait are sent to Avernum. The Empire doesn't
want someone with these kind of skills running around.

Classifications

Soldiers: Soldiers received excellent military training on the surface,
the best the Empire had to offer. They are the followers of the Empire, and very rarely get sent
down to Avernum. That doesn't mean it never happens though. After all, everyone is in danger of
exile.

Berserker: Berserkers are wild swordsman from remote areas of the
Empire. Their wildness tends to get them dumped into Avernum. Most are people who have no
home, or who's families were murdered by the Empire. They often lead attacks against the
Emperor.

Cleric: A Cleric is a priest in one of the faiths disapproved of by the
Empire. They have excellent healing powers, but usually end up
needing them in Avernum. No one is quiet sure what the Empire has against these gentle folk, but
the hatred is apparent.

Sorcerer: Sorcerers are practitioners of the wizardly arts. They often
use spells high in both offence and defense. Because of their
dangerous research and eccentricities, they tend to be sent down to
Avernum. Many attemps have been made by the Empire to rid the surface of them, either by death
or exile.

Rogue: Rogues are nimble, good with hand to hand combat, and able
to handle locks and traps. They also tend to walk off with things they
don't own. Unsurprisingly, the Empire just loves to send them to
Avernum. True Rogue follow a strict code though: They don't steal from the poor, ill people, or
children.

Archer: Archers were either hunters or trained members of the Empire
army, highly skilled with bows and missile weapons. In the Empire
army, a dishonorable discharge tends to mean exile to Avernum.

Hedge Wizard: Hedge Wizards live in the remote villages of the
Empire where they help the locals with their magic skills. At one time the Emperor tried to control
them and force them to use their powers to help his army. Almost all rebelled and were therefore
sent to Avernum.

Shamans: Shamans are the priests of the back hills. They are good
with Alchemy, but their knowledge of weaponry is questionable.
Shaman often claim to talk to spirits, and are called insane, therefore getting themselves thrown in
Avernum. Most Shamans have now learned to keep their mouths shut.
