Avalon: Whooohooo!!! Chapter three!!! It doesn't get any
better than this. Unless, of course, this were chapter 4, then it
would be better. Or maybe chapter 5, or chapter 6, or Well, you get this point.
Freedom In Exile:
Chapter 3 No Way Out
Dear Diary,
Right now, as I write this, I'm in an inn in Avernum. For a
room with two beds it's 13 gold. Of course, we don't have that
much gold to spare, so Ranma and I are sharing a bed. It's
unbelievingly uncomfortable.
After entering Avernum Ranma and I split up to gather
supply's and information. I went to a man name Petelly, I hope
everyone in Avernum isn't like him, and Ranma went to a lady
named Luriel,. Isn't that a pretty name? We just now got finished
talking about all the stuff we found out. Ranma's asleep now,
but I probably couldn't sleep if I wanted to.
It's funny how different things are down here then they were on
the surface. Even after leaving home I hardly ever had any real worries, everything worked out just
fine. But even though I haven't been a whole day, I've already worried myself sick.
When I talked to Petelly he told me a lot of things.
Apparently, humans aren't the only things beside monsters down
here. To the north-east there is a Nephililm fort. We had Nephs
back on the surface, they're cat-like humanoids that don't get
along well with humans. The ones down here don't get along
well with humans either, they are killing off travelers and stealing
from nearby forts.
Nephililm aren't the only things causing trouble though.
Petelly told me of a big bandit problem, and that the Sliths are
making lots of trouble. I already figured there would be bandits, we had plenty on the surface. I had
no idea what a Slith was.
I was told they were like the Nephililm, only lizard-like. Slith is
short for Slitherzerkai. I also found out that down here in
Avernum, to the south-west, is a place called the Honeycombs.
It's a bunch of winding tunnels and caverns with a magic illusion
on it to make it all look the same. That's where the Sliths live,
Petelly said, nobody ever goes there because they won't ever
come out. I figure the Sliths must be strong magic users to be
able to pull of such an illusion. Illusion spells are my worst
subject.
There's a reward out for the chief Nephililm's head. 500 gold!! Can you imagine how long that
would last us?!. Petelly didn't sound to confident that we would be able to do it though, but that's
just cause he doesn't know us very well. This should be a piece of
cake for Ran-kun and me!
We got a map from Ms.Luriel, it's really big. I'm planning on
putting a magikal incantation on it so the place we're at will
always have a glowing mark. Ranma pointed out all the
important places Ms. Luriel showed him. Fort Avernum, the
place we are at now, is in the middle of the map. To the direct
south is a place called "Silent Hill"*. Ranma couldn't say much
about it, because Ms.Luriel hadn't been willing to talk. To the
west is a big river with a really big bridge going across it called
:The Draco Passing." On the other side is the land of the
dragons, and the location of Fort Draco. There was a Fort
Draco on the surface to, maybe the one down here was named by
a homesick exile?
There's lots to be done tomorrow so I should probably go
to sleep. But before I do, you know there's one thing I can't get
off my mind.---
Usagi paused and looked around. She looked at the
uncomfortable bed, she looked at Ranma, she looked out the
small stone window and into the now dark Fort Avernum. She
glared at the fiery portal in the distance and then looked at her
journal.
-----Luriel said it, Petelly said it, Edwyll said it, and I'm sure
anyone else I ask will agree. Why denie what's right in front of you? There is no escape from this
hell,
there is no way out.

I've never slept on such a hard bed. I mean, there was that one
time, but it wasn't this bad. It's like laying on cement, maybe
worse. Not that I expected much for only 6 gold but this is just
messed up!! Plus, it's really, really cold, and Usagi keeps making
annoying scratching noises with her pen! You'd think someone
with as much formal training as her would be able to write right.
And she says she learned from the best! Hmph!
How did she get that book down here anyway? I tried to
sneak down some weapons and I got caught. I'm supposed to be
the sly, cunning, sneaky thief!
.........Man, this place is kinda boring. I expected there to be
a little more fighting and action. All I've done so far is...well,
nothing. I liked it way better on the surface. Nothing was ever
boring there, Ryouga was always there to fight with, Akane was
always being annoying, Kasumi was always there with a kind
smile... Those were the days.....
"You awake, Ra?"
I hate that stupid nickname. It's supposed to be a god of one of
the religions her friend studied, but I still don't like it. At least she's
done though.
I cracked open one eye and looked at her, "Don't call me
that! And get in bed, I'm freezing my ass off!"
Usagi grinned, the same way she used to back on the
surface, before we screwed things up, and dove under the covers
with me. She cuddled up to my chest and I placed my chin on
her head. "I can cast a heat spell, if you want." Always looking
for the opportunity to use magic, that's Usagi.
I made a noise of disagreement, "Don't bother. It's already
getting warmer." She hummed quietly to herself and drifted off
to sleep. Putting my arm around her waist and pulling her closer,
I sighed, things would never be the same. We had lost are
chance of freedom and had screwed up our lives right when
everything was finally getting good. But I'm not like the other exiles
down here, I have my own little piece of sunshine. And I plan on
making the best of my time with it, whether I'm stuck in hell or
not.

* For anyone whose played Silent Hill, we might send the group
there and have them fight double headers, and pyramid heads,
and maybe run into Stanley Coleman or Claudia. What do you
think?~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Avalon: Man, that one really sucked.
Avalon: Oh... I hate the paragraphing, it's all fucked up.
I can't do it right. If anyone has any useful information on
how to fix it, I'd be really grateful!
