Isn't college fun?

I don't own Ranma 1/2.

"Pop!" shouted a young girl. "How could you do this to me?!" She paced back and forward, her pigtail swinging around agitatedly. Her companion--a giant panda--sat lazily by a pool pawing at the fish swimming inside. It turned around gravely with a sign that read, "You never specified whether you wanted to go as a male." She stopped, rigid with anger and kicked him threw the roof screaming, "I, Ranma Saotome, will not go to college as a woman!" As the panda flew it's sign read, "Then stop acting like one." Ranma sat and grabbed the kettle sitting conveniently beside her and poured the contents over her. He sighed and lay down. After he'd broke it off with Akane, he and his pop had moved. He'd left her with Ryoga, hoping she'd take a liking to him. He never had found out how she felt for him. He was still a great fighter, but he'd got down to studying and finally he'd been accepted into a small college at the edge of town. Unfortunately, when he'd applied it had been raining and well...He blamed the curse on his father whenever he needed to relieve some steam. It helped a little. They'd corrected his application and now he was enrolled as a Ranma Saotome, busty female. He sighed and dodged his dad flying back in on him. "I was wondering where you went," he said as he splashed the giant panda with hot water. Genma sat across from him and sat, looking contemplative. Finally he said, "...Well, it's your own fault so bite the bullet and go to school." A vein on Ranma's head pulsed, "What a stupid father!" he yelled as he threw the kettle at him. Genma ducked and caught it. "This would never have happened if you'd have just married Akane." Ranma shook his head, "Give up already, how could anyone ever marry that un-cute girl... I'm going for a walk pop, I'll be back later." He opened the door and walked out into the night. Genma sighed and reached for the paper that fluttered down from his hand as he left. "College..." he murmured. He went to the phone and dialled an old friend.

Ranma put his hands behind his back as he walked. He'd seen Shampoo only a week ago. She'd finally given up on him and accepted Mousse. The hurt in her eyes as he congratulated her had made him feel guilty. They reminded him someone else's eyes as he'd said 'no'. Shampoo had hugged him, and said, "But you I always love Ranma." Then she had kissed him and fled. Well, at least Mousse would be happy. And Shampoo would clobber him within an inch of his life whenever she was bored. It was a win-win relationship either way. He heard a 'meow' and jumped onto the nearest roof. A small cat walked out of the bushes and meowed again. Ranma had slightly overcome his fears. He still didn't like being around them, but he could handle small ones for a slightly longer period of time. Although when his fear reached a peak he still yowled, but it hadn't happened since--since he'd left. He jumped down and walked around it. The cat started towards him and he increased his pace. When he got home his father was asleep and his acceptance letter was near his futon. Ranma tucked him in gently and crawled into his own. He wouldn't have much more time with his old man, he'd be living in a dorm now.

The week whizzed by and Ranma found himself at the college asking directions to his new dorm room. He had a roommate, but he wasn't going to be staying there long, so he didn't bother to check who. Not like he'd know them anyways. He thanked the girl he'd asked and located the room. His roomate was already in there. Ranma shut the door and dumped his things on the unoccupied bed. "Hello?" "Oh, I'm in the bathroom. Hold on just a sec." His memory tinged, it was a very familiar voice. "No.." he whispered. "It couldn't be..." Akane walked out of the bathroom in just her bra and undies, her head was down as she wrapped a towel around her wet hair. "Sorry," she began. "I just got out of the shower, I was all sweaty from run--" She looked up and froze. "Ran..ma..." she ran back into the bathroom. "What are you doing here?!" she cried. The door reopened and she came out fully dressed. Her anger was evident but she didn't seem to want to go near him. "Huh, it's good to see you too." Akane looked up at him, "I didn't want to see you again. Couldn't you at least honor that?" She turned around and walked out the door. He followed her. They made their way to the front desk.

A girl smiled up at them, "Can I help you?" She saw Ranma and frowned, "This is a girl's dorm, sir. Men are not allowed here." Ranma handed over his sheet. "There must have been a mistake. I was accidentally assigned here and--" Akane cut in, "And I want him out." The phone rang. "Will you excuse me for a moment?" the girl asked. "Hello, this is the south wing girl's dorm, Kagayaku speaking. How may I help you? Oh, hello! Uh huh. Yes. Umm..okay. Sooo...alright, alright. I'll arrange it, don't worry. Are you sure though? I could get in--oh. Well that changes everything! Alright, call me later with details. Bubye." She looked up again with a smile. "So you said your name was..?" "Ranma Saotome." "Akane Tendo." The girl nodded, "Well my name is Kagayaku Sangoku. Alright, let's see what I can do." She turned to her computer and her fingers became a blur on the keyboard. After a moment, she looked up regretfully. "Well, there really are no openings any where. I'm afraid you'll just have to work it out on your own. I'm terribly sorry. If there's any more problems don't be afraid to ask. As for the rooms, I'm afraid my hands are tied." Ranma stepped back with a polite "Thank you" and walked away. Akane caught up to him and said, "You are moving out of my room immediately Ranma. I don't care. You will not live in the same room as me!" As they walked away Kagayaku picked up the phone. "Hello, Nabiki? Yeah, I set it up. They're stuck together now. I hope it all works out. You owe me one. Uh huh, I'll keep an eye on them. Talk to ya later, girl, bubye." Nabiki sat back with a satisfied grin. "Well there you have it, Mr. Saotome. Step one has been taken. I hope this works."

Ranma and Akane found themselves back in the room. He lay on his bed carelesly and said, "Look Akane, I just want to go to school. I don't want to have this awkwardness between us. There were no hard feelings about the break up. I mean, it was arranged, it's not like we ever had feelings for each other in the first place. Why don't we just start out anew, as friends, okay?" Akane sat down on the opposite bed. "Alright, but you have to promise to turn into a girl whenever you're with me." Ranma bolted up, "What? Why?" Akane eyed him coolly, "It makes me feel less worried about your perverted nature." He caught on that she was teasing, with a smile he said, "As if I could ever like an un-cute girl like you!" She threw a pillow at him. The tension around them dissolved. They were back the way it was before. Or...?

He tossed it back to her and she rested her head against it. "I do have one question Ranma." "Hm?" "Why are you here?" she asked softly. Ranma sighed and replied, "I want to be a doctor, but I love art, so I'm taking courses in art and in medicinal science. After all, when I'm a doctor I might find a way to cure this condition once and for all and as an artist I'll just naturally be doing what I love." He paused and asked, "What about you?" Akane sighed, "No where near as exciting as you I suppose. I want to be a teacher. I--I love being around kids--not that I want any! I just, I dunno. It feels right. It feels like this is what I was meant to do." She leaned back. "But now I sound like an idiot." Ranma laughed, "No, that's great Akane. I hope it works out. I'm gonna look around, wouldja mind givin' me a tour?" Akane sat up. "Sure, this is, after all, my second year."

The two walked out the door and Ranma inwardly cringed. It was so fake. Friendly words may have been spoken, but it wasn't there. He knew she still hated him. After all, he'd been pretty cruel. Just asking to be friends didn't mean anything. He now had to earn her trust again. Akane felt the same. Although Ranma had said that, it was too weird. She wanted to forget. The day he left, was the day she broke because of him. Then he reappears and unknowingly upturns her routinely expected, uneventful life. Tears stinging her eyes she cried mentally, "Damn you Ranma, damn you!" Ryoga had confessed his feelings for her, but she'd rejected him. Harsh as that sounded, she just couldn't force herself to love him. He understood and had left. She remembered the day clearly now, when Ranma had walked away and left her.

"I'm sorry Akane. I've had enough of all this. I just can't stay here anymore. I mean, we don't love each other, and I can't force myself into a loveless marriage no matter what. You and I both knew this day would come, but I'm sorry." He'd backed away from her, a backpack slung over his shoulder. Akane remembered saying, "Don't be sorry. We both knew, right? Right. Why should I care, it's not like it ever really mattered to me anyways. Just go already Ranma. There's no point in you staying anyways." She'd turned then and walked away. And when he left, she'd given her love to him and she didn't want it back anymore. What she'd wanted to say was, "Please don't, I love you. I do. I want to be with you forever and I couldn't bear to lose you. don't leave me." She hadn't eaten for days after that and had instead stayed in her room. Not crying, but staying. She did nothing but sit in her room and sleep. Ryoga would visit her daily and he'd cheer her up, but Akane forced herself to push him away.

Fake. Fake friendship. A hidden grudge. Painful, angry memories. That was what really was there. Akane gave Ranma a tour and then left. She needed to workout. She needed to relieve her stress. She'd lost wieght, slimmed down and gained in the chest. Her legs had gotten more graceful, but her muscules were strong. She'd trained like a mad beast. Her hair was less puffy and slightly longer all around. It was a hair length that finally worked with her. Tomboy forever, she wore baggier clothes and constantly sparred with other members of the gym. When she got there a wave of greetings fell into her. She smiled and greeted her friends gratefully. She needed something to distract her. She threw herself into her routine workout and ended it with a hard run.

Ranma had grinned and begun walking back to the dorm but he needed to fight. If only Ryoga was there he might have a slight challenge, or at least fun in teasing him. Akane had said she was going to the gym, and he did not want to be in the same room with her. The entire situation made him uncomfortable. He climbed up the roof and practiced light back flips, kicks, punches and dodging thinking of what life might have been had he not fallen into the spring of drowned girl. He supposed he would have been immediately married to Akane, and lived...miserably? What did he know? All his male friends had been in awe of the break up, happy but in disbelief. His girlfriends had been overjoyed and Akane? Well, she didn't act like she was happy, but there are no second chances. Kuno had come up to him and said, "Are you mad?! Leaving the beauteous Akane?! Oh well," he clapped him on the back. "Now there's more chance for me." Ranma had left him with Dr. Tofu after he'd beaten him into a bloody pulp. Even the doctor had commented. "I'm surprised, quite frankly, that you broke it off. Akane's a wonderful girl." Kasumi had walked by and Kuno's arm had suffered for it. Ranma brushed them all off. He didn't care about that macho chick. She was nothing to him.

"Two years, two years and he walks right back into my life, how dare he?! How dare he?!! Why--couldn't he--have left--me--ALONE!" Akane's punching bag split open and she sighed. "Oops..." Her friend, Shimo, rolled her eyes and said loudly, "Stupid, we're not all as strong as you. Take it easy on the equipment." Akane sat down roughly. "I'm exhausted, Shimo-chan. Leave me alone." Shimo's face creased into a small frown. "What's the matter Akane?" she asked softly, sitting next to her. Akane smiled and forced her legs up. As she walked away she called, "Nothing, I'm just peachy, Shimo-chan." Under her breath she muttered, "Just peachy..."

Ranm lay down on the roof for a light nap. Nothing like a little rest to aid the wavering mind. He sighed as he heard someone exclaim in amazement. He cracked an eye open and propped himself on his elbow looking down at the small crowd below. He'd have to ditch or he'd be in trouble. He hated making too big a scene and he never really intended to attract attention, it was just part of who he was. He smiled and waved at the crowd and then ran down the opposite side. He yawned and ducked into the room. Maybe he could finish the nap really quickly while Akane was out.
