A Special Place
Trees, people, and the road fly by as I stare out the window of Adrian's car. After my encounter with my mother I told him to just drive and he granted my wishes. I didn't care as to where we would go; I just knew that I needed to escape. I open the window to the car and feel the wind fly freely against my tear stained face; it felt divine. The wind was lucky. It was free to blow when it wanted to without much rebuke or flow peacefully within the trees as if it was dancing away. I wish I could have the freedom to express every ounce of feeling that I had within me. After my father passed, my mother discouraged any show of emotion, becoming irate when I would shed my tears for him. I then taught myself to hold it all it in order to stay on my mother's good side; I so wanted to please her, but I never could. Now that I think of it, I don't think I ever would be able to please someone like her, someone who had no heart, someone with a frozen soul. I wondered to myself about how she came to be so cold, but then again I never knew her to be happy; ever.
Adrian stirred me from my thoughts, “I know of this spot that I would like to share with you if you're willing?” he glances at me with question. “Its one of my favorite spots that I go to; to think about everything and anything, someplace where I feel free.”
To feel free was exactly what I needed. I needed to find someplace where I could get a sense of release. Luckily I had a day off of work today and could afford this adventure. I finally look towards my new found friend and grant him a reply, “Yes that sounds like great idea at the moment. I'm in desperate need of freedom.” I smile at him sweetly. He smiles back with his own silent agreement as my thoughts return to me.
Daddy did you send him to me, did you know that I would be in need of your guidance? I wondered to myself in silence. Could Adrian be my own guardian angel sent to me from my own beloved father? Did he have a look at the future and knew that I was approaching hard times, or was it something else. I was always the type that believed in fate and destiny; I was my father's daughter after all, I was a dreamer. Whichever the answer may be I was glad to have met him. In the brief time that we have spent with each other, he has helped me in many ways. He allowed me to be…me, with no rules or restrictions; just his acceptance. I hoped that I would learn more about him and have our friendship take shape, since I knew that I needed one at this point in my life. My life was disheveled and I needed to be able to break free from it all. Luckily Adrian showed up in the knick of time.
We finally arrived at our destination. I had no clue where we were. It seemed like we just drove into the middle of the woods, with no people or houses within site. I turned to Adrian giving him a questioning look. A look that asked the question of whether he was lost or not. He just smiled.
“We have to walk a ways to get to my special place. This is just where the road ends.” He says while starting to get out of the car. I proceeded to follow his lead and exit his car. I felt myself sigh in relief as I left the structure of the road and entered the free flowing forest before me. To where I was going didn't matter at the moment, I just let my feet guide me as they followed their leader, Adrian.
We walked quite a distance into the wooded enchantment. I felt in awe at how green everything was. It was like a picture out of a fairy tale; the charmed forest. Creatures started to scurry from our path and I even saw a family of foxes snoozing in a nearby den. It was magical. I never knew such a place existed. The only world I truly knew was the hustle and bustle of the highly energetic city. I could get use to this.
“We're almost there,” he says with enthusiasm as he takes my hand to rush onward. I didn't know if I wanted to rush this whole experience but it was worth it when I saw our destination. We both broke through into a clearing that took my breath away. There was a nice size cabin sitting in front of a gently flowing creek. The sun shown through the breaks in the trees and wrapped the cabin in a cheery glow. There were wild flowers in abundance along a pebble stone path leading up to the cabin's doorstep. Everything seemed to sparkle. If happiness were packaged in a bottle, this is what it would look like, I thought to myself. The place radiated with a sense of peace, and I instantly became relaxed as I listened to the trickle of water from the nearby creek.
“It's beautiful,” I finally said as words became absent from my mind.
“Welcome to my home,” he greeted me with a smile.
“You're home? I thought that I was in your home back in the city. That apartment.”
“That is the place I live, yes you are not mistaken there, but” he paused, “this is my home.” He looked out at it in all its splendor.
“Do you own this land?” I asked still confused at the whole matter, not being able to grasp the simple concept that distinguished a home from a place of residence.
“Yes. It was given to me by my parents when they passed. This used to be their home, or more like their own sanctuary from the real world. I could even remember playing in that very creek over their when I was just a child and feeling the comfort of escaping all the troubles that were in the city. It still is my escape, but lately it has become my project.” He stopped and started walking up to the cabin and sat on the porch bench. I wanted him to continue and hoped he would, so I followed.
I sat next to him and listened on intently, hoping to get a glimpse into the man named Adrian.
“My parents died when I was entering my adolescence. It was a very sad time for me, not only because I would never be able to see them again, but I wouldn't ever get to come back here. Don't get me wrong, I loved my parents immensely, and thank them each day for the wisdom they taught me and the love they shared. I was to be taken away to live with my aunt and uncle in another city much to far from this place to even chance a visit. It wasn't till later that I learned that my parents gave me their home, our home. By the time I was finally able to return, the place was in ruin due to many years of harsh weather and lack of love to fill its soul. Now I come back here as much as possible and work on the property, to return it to its magnificence and fill it with warmth and happiness it once held when I was a child. It's my only mission in life, to restore this home and share it so that it will never know emptiness again.”
I look at the passionate creature next to me and couldn't believe that he even existed. I even pinched myself to make sure it wasn't a dream, that he was real and that I was really here sharing this moment with him. I couldn't speak. I couldn't find the words. All I could do was sit there and stare off into the wonderful site that was present before me. Adrian did the same enjoying the peace of it all. It kind of comforted me in away, that he wasn't expecting or demanding me to speak or carry on conversation. We both found it much more relaxing and enjoyable just being there in each other's company taking in all the good feelings that were radiating from the house.
I took a chance and spoke. “Could I help you work on achieving your goal? To help restore your cabin in the woods?” I looked at him with a slight smile.
He looked out into the enchantment, “my cabin in the woods. I like the sound of that.” He then turned to me and smiled in response. “Yes I would greatly enjoy your company and help with restoring this place, this cabin in the woods as you so called it.”
“Ok where shall we start,” I jump up raring to go.
Adrian just laughed and shook his head. “I'm guessing through all the excitement of my wondrous tale you didn't quite realize the sun was starting to set. Unfortunately we shall have to wait till another day to get anything done. I fear that it is time for you to jump back into the real world,” he looked at me with a slight bit of sadness in his eyes.
My world crashed as I noticed that the sky was darkening, which meant that I had to go back to the city, and back to my apartment. I couldn't hide from Drake forever. I had to face him and deal or my life couldn't move forward.
Adrian took my hand when he realized my sudden change in face. “If you need me, just close your eyes and run back here in your mind.”
I looked at him through my sadden eyes wanting to tell him exactly what I had been through but I couldn't, yet he still showed understanding with his gaze. “Will you be at the park tomorrow by any chance? I…I may need someone to talk to.” I look up into his dark deep eyes, eyes that one could drown in.
“Sure, I can be there for you tomorrow.” He smiled with his eyes, which made me feel much stronger and ready to face what was in store for me tonight.
We walked back to his car which seemed like it took a matter of seconds to get to. I enjoyed his warmth as we held each others hands in a friendly manner. We let each other go finally as we went to our own side of the car and got in. We were then suddenly in front of my apartment to much of my dismay. I now had to leave the pleasantry of his company and embark on the stresses that were warping and twisting inside of my apartment. I look back at Adrian one last time and saw his smile that gave me the sense that everything was going to be alright.
