"Sit down and shut up already!" The English teacher, Akihiko Usami, strode into the classroom, glaring hatefully at each and every student. His family was forcing him to spend a year teaching, just because he "accidently" set the main house on fire. Although nobody was hurt and the house remained intact, his family was still fuming. Without glancing at his teacher's manual, he turned his back to the class and said, "Open your Literature Classics book to page 14 and read the entire chapter. There will be a test on it before the end of class." He took pleasure in hearing those groans from the class.
One of the students, Yama Yasha, would not take abuse from a teacher, no matter how crabby of a mood he was in! Winking at his friends, he raised his hand. Without waiting to be called on, Yasha called out, "Did your girlfriend walk out on you or something?! I swear! I've never met a more bitter man than our Usami-sensei!!" The classroom exploded, laughing so hard that their faces turned blue. However, one look from the teacher silenced them.
Yasha was horrified to see a cold smile on the teacher's face. He could only imagine what that horrible man was thinking! "You may stay after school with me today, Yama-kun." Yasha glared into his Literature book, silently plotting the demise of this despicable man. He looked around at his classmates and was appalled! Despite the impressive act of indifference, most of the girls in the class were swooning over their English teacher. He had to resist the urge to puke.
The sound of small footsteps tapping against the tile floor interrupted his thoughts. A young child wearing a white dress with a black wrap in the middle, black bonds on their wrists and ankles, and a beautiful gold and ruby ring to hold up their glossy, thick black hair stood at the doorway. Everyone turned to stare at the beauty. Usami-sensei merely nodded at her (or him; depends on your point of view). "Class, this is Ashura. She is a prodigy child. She's only eight, so I expect you to be kind to her." Everyone smiled and said hello. Yasha was unable to tear is eyes away, no matter how much he tried. "Ashura, go sit by that trouble-maker." He pointed in Yasha's direction.
Slowly, she made her way to the back of the room. Yasha could feel his heart trying to escape his chest. Why was he so nervous? It was just a new kid, and she was half his age! When she sat down, he began to breathe again. 'Wait, when did I stop breathing?!!'

It was lunchtime, everyone's favorite time of the school day. Ashura sat alone in the courtyard. She watched a couple giggling and holding hands, and it made her feel depressed. More than anything, she wanted to be someone's beloved, to be held and protected. But because she was alive, she couldn't have that. She knew she was destined to be alone forever. She didn't notice the tears running down her face until she felt someone wiping them away. She looked up to find Yasha's blue eyes. She jumped back, startled.
"Hey, what's wrong?" He looked genuinely concerned. Ashura turned away, hoping that he would leave her alone. She didn't want to find someone, only to have them walk out of her life forever. When he still remained, she spun around to look at him again. "There's nothing wrong. Go away now!"
"No." That monosyllabic answer filled Ashura with dread.
"I mean it. I'll burn your eyes out of their sockets." While she kept that look of fierce determination, she trembled inside. What if he called her bluff?
"I don't care. Let the flames devour me." He stood up, glancing at a group of people sitting under a huge elm tree. "Why don't you eat with me and my friends? You won't find a nicer group of people in this school."
For a moment, she considered his offer. He was basically right. No one else would even bother to look at her, much less try to cheer her up. Taking his hand, she smiled. "Of course. Thank you." They made their way over to the elm. As they passed people, Ashura could hear them whispering and pointing at her direction. She caught someone saying, "Oh, God! Yasha's finally done it now. Sleeping with a child?! Simply unforgivable!!" Embers of hatred flared up in her chest. Why must people be so vicious towards her?
A boy with raven-black hair and matching cat ears pulled out a pillow for Ashura to sit on. A girl with dark skin and a girl with long, black hair and a harp looked at Yasha strangely. Yasha decided to get the introductions over with. "This is Ashura, everyone. Ashura, this is Ritsuka (boy with cat ears), Kendappa (girl with harp), Sohma (dark-skinned girl), Amu (girl with pink hair), Yuiko (girl with aburn hair and big chest), and Ryuu (brown hair boy).
"Hi, everyone." Ashura smiled demurely.
"I like her." Sohma stated plainly. "She's cute, but she looks like she can take care of herself."
"Yeah!" Ritsuka instantly agreed. "You look like you can kill an army with one blow!" To empasize this, he mimiked throwing a series of punches. Ryuu and Yasha broke into a fit of laughter. Ashura was confused for a moment, then laughed along with the others.
'Maybe this will work after all,' Ashura thought happily. 'Finally, happiness can be mine!'
Meanwhile, a boy stood in the shadows, staring at the joyous group. His slick black hair fell over one eye, forcing him to blow it off. His jacket was dusty and worn from previous owners, and his figure thin from stress. The sight of the child revolted him. He swore to himself that he would get rid of the one thing that stood between him and the popular students, including Yama Yasha.
