Jun quickly shut the door as soon as Anna got in. "This is ridiculous!" Those pictures were going to be all over the news and the paper.
Anna sat down on the couch. "My parents are going to be the laughing stock of this city," Anna said in near tears. "First I have a picture of me half naked with you then I ruin my dad's career, and now people think I'm carrying your child. Why don't I just push them down the stairs while I'm at it? Worst daughter of the year award..."
"Don't worry. I'll fix things," he assured her. He moved to the other side so that he could wrap his good arm around her. Taking a deep breath he stood and went to the front door. From there, he proceeded to open it and go out into the mob of reporters. He was going to end this.
Anna walked after him and grabbed his arm. "Are you crazy?! They will eat you alive!"
"No, they won't." If there was one thing he had practice with, it was dealing with those who wouldn't leave him alone. The best thing to do wasn't to shy away from them. It was the confront it and end it as quickly as possible.
Already the reporters were coming at him. Closing his eyes, he steeled himself. "You people want answers. Answers to questions which shouldn't even exist. My father is a cruel and terrible man, but he is the only family I have." He held up his cast so that the reporters could see it. "The Greens are good people. I am but a stranger, and yet they took me in and offered me shelter. Because of their kindness they have suffered."
Looking into the faces of the reporters, he knew that he was giving them exactly what they wanted. "You harass them. You torment them. You only add to my father's smear campaign against them to better himself. They are good people, and do not deserve this. The picture you've undoubtedly seen, as well as the private moment you violated in her backyard have led you to speculate many reasons for what has transpired."
"The Greens have only been in Japan for a week. Tell me, how do you think she could be carrying my child by then? Look at my records. Tell me, if this is all some way to extort money out of my father so that I can be with her, why have I been to the hospital so many times in my youth? I've been quiet for too long, because as long as I was the only one getting hurt. Now that you're attacking innocent people just for gossip and hearsay, I can be quiet no longer."
Anna walked up beside him. She took his hand and questions started flying. "I don't believe I was the only one that knew what was going on in the Higarashi home. I'm sure other people, people that worked for Mr. Higarashi such as high ups that worked with Mr. Higarashi knew and didn't say anything to protect Jun." She looked at Jun. "I'm a very small girl...and I don't know much about this culture," she then turned back to the reporters, "but I'm smart enough to know that beating your son or daughter is wrong. Getting Jun out of the Higarashi house was a priority of my family. Both my parents didn't know a thing about Jun, but gladly took him in as soon as I told them he needed help. Though a lot of you often call me brave and courageous, none of you have even bothered to mention the fact that Jun is much braver than I could ever be. He spent a great deal of his life in that house with that man and still found the courage to survive."
Jun smirked at this. He didn't consider what he'd done as being brave. He'd simply survived. That was all there was to it. It was his way of life. No one could call him brave for simply living. "Now that we've answered your questions, please quit making false accusations." Squeezing Anna's hand, he turned to go back inside.
The questions didn't stop. Anna turned to them. "Just so you know, this is private property. I'll be calling the cops as soon as we get inside. Anyone standing on my property without my or my parents permission will be arrested," Anna said. She watched as she started to back off her yard. Once inside, Anna did as she promised and called the police. They were sending a few cops to threaten the reports and make them leave. Afterward, Anna's parents called and said they were staying at a hotel since it was getting late and they didn't want to travel so late. Anna looked at Jun. "My parents won't be home tonight," she said. "Jun, that was really brave of you...to stand up to them like that."
Jun smiled, but it was small. "Trust me, I didn't exactly feel brave at all. It was something I was going to have to do eventually. I just chose to face it now rather than later. Though I'm certain that I will have to face them again before its all over."
Anna placed her hand on his face and ran her thumb gently over his bruises. "And I'll be right beside you. You and me, Jun, all the way."
His smile grew larger as he heard that. "I like the sound of that." He brought his hand up to her face, his thumb running over her smooth and soft flesh.
Anna blushed and stepped away. "You should go take a hot shower. I'll get the cream ready for you and make some herbal tea. My mom says it helps the healing so we should get you fixed up," she said and started to the kitchen.
"Right...will do." Jun nodded and started upstairs to Anna's room. After grabbing his night clothes, he went into her bathroom and turned on the shower. Immediately following that, he finally did what he wanted to do ever since he talked to the reporters. He quickly proceeded to throw up into the toilet.
Anna prepared the tea and put away their leftover food from dinner. She poured Jun a cup of the tea and walked upstairs just as she heard the shower turn off. Going to her room, she sat the tea cup down and grabbed her pajamas. Jun came out of the bathroom and she went in. While she showered, he drank his tea. After her shower, Anna put some cream on Jun, then kissed his cheek and they went to bed.
Three days later, Anna and Jun finally went to school. Anna sat in Jun's car staring at the building. Everyone was staring at both her and Jun inside his car. The girls looked like they wanted to jump her and the guy wanted to know what Jun saw in her. She already felt uncomfortable and she wasn't even out of the car yet. She looked at Jun. Most of his bruising was gone thanks to her mother's cream. He looked calm and collective like always. To him, it was just another school day. To Anna, it was a school day where she was dating the most popular boy in school and gave the girls the perfect reason to murder her.
"You ready?" Jun was still trying to fuss with his school jacket. He had to have it bunched up on his arm since it wouldn't go over his cast, but this it proceeded to cut off circulation to the rest of his arm. Though he was just as poised as ever, in truth he wasn't certain how he was going to handle this. Trying to juggle his persona at school and Anna was going to be very difficult to pull off. The kids had already been instructed not to speak about his father or the proceedings which would be taking place soon. He just hoped they kept to that. He'd really hate to have to hurt someone.
Anna looked a the girls again. She should have made a will before getting in the car with Jun. "Yeah, as ready as I'll ever be," she said and grabbed her bag then got out. As soon as she got out, someone threw their lunch at her. Anna ducked, but the food hit Jun's car and splashed all over Anna. She groaned while trying to knock some of it off. It smeared on her uniform. "Great, now I'm a Japanese lunch box," she said. She scanned the crowd but no one owed up to the throw. Everyone was giving her the same look. The ones that were looking at Jun, looked at him with sympathy and care. Anna sighed. "This is going to be a very long day," she said while looking at her ruined uniform.
Jun sighed. Great. Now even at school they were getting lashed out at. "Don't worry. I'll get the headmaster to get you a new uniform. You can change after our first class." His face was soft and caring as he spoke to her, but the second he looked toward the other kids his face turned hard and cold. Everyone parted ways as he walked up the steps with Anna. She was off limits to all of them.
Anna laughed. "It's ok. I'll manage. People did way worse to me back in my old schools," she said as they started to class.
"Yes, well they should know better here," Jun told her. He couldn't help but to loathe Mr. Moto's smug grin as they entered the classroom.
"Well, if it isn't Mr. Scandal coming to joining us? Take your seats."
Jun swore. The moment he got the chance that guy was getting punched in the face so hard!
Anna turned to Mr. Moto. "With all due respect, if you don't respect the rules the headmaster laid out about keeping your personal thoughts about resent happenings then I would gladly go tell my father's close friend that his own employed teacher refuses the rules he wrote himself," she said then took her seat. "I'm just saying," she added with a shrug.
Jun sighed as everyone just glared at Anna. She wasn't exactly making this easy. Sometimes it was better to just be quiet then to go around threatening the entire school.
Reisha leaned forward and whispered to Anna. "Be careful today. The girls are zoned in on you. They're out for blood."
Anna turned to look at Reisha. "I punched a man ten times my size in the face the other day. I'm feeling a little braver than I should, but I figured if I show fear it will only fuel them," she said. "I brought my mother's homemade chicken salad today. Hope you are hungry."
Reisha smiled. "I'm starving," she said excitedly. Her excitement subsided for a moment as she smirked. "So it's true right? I mean you and Jun are....?"
Anna glanced at Jun. "Yeah..." she said smiling lightly and turned back around as the class started.
Reisha smiled brightly. "Good for you Jun-chan," she whispered as the class started.
Jun tried to take notes, but writing with his left hand wasn't working out as well as he had hoped. So for most of the day he simply tried to listen. He could always grab Reisha's notes if he needed them. When lunchtime came, he waited before disappearing. He wanted to make certain that no one was going to try and do anything to Anna.
Anna walked with Reisha to lunch and sat with her like always. Jun was gone...like always. Reisha and Anna switched lunches. "Wow, something I actually recognize," she said smiling.
It was going fine. Everything was fine....until someone happen to accidentally trip Anna when lunch ended. Anna laid there on the floor staring at the ceiling while others laughed and Reisha started grabbing her things off the floor. "Yep...best day ever."
The rest of the day went without incident. When gym class came, Jun could do little more then run laps like he was suppose to. Generally now would be when he was practicing kendo, but it was a little hard to do that when he only had one good arm.
Reisha groaned after gym. "The gym teacher is trying to kill us," she moaned, rubbing her sore legs.
The next two weeks went on the same way. Anna would get tripped, sometimes her things would go missing, other times food would land in her lap during lunch, but it was nothing she couldn't handle. Eventually she got use to it. Her and Jun didn't hold hands in school nor kiss and rarely said anything to each other unless they were talking about school work. It made things easier on Anna and her mob of haters. At home, however, they laughed together, studied together, and held hands. At night, they gave each other good night kisses and talked until they fell asleep. The end of the two weeks came and Jun and Anna along with her parents sat in a lawyer’s office.
"I'm sorry, we just can't let these papers go through until the case against Jun's father is settled. He won't be emancipated," the lawyer said.
Anna's father sat back in his chair while and played with Jun's hand. It was quite for a long time until Anna's mom spoke. "What about adopting him?" she said.
Anna tensed. It would be like having him as a brother. She let go of his hand. Suddenly...this seemed really uncomfortable.
"You can't adopt him, Mrs. Green, but," the lawyer grabbed out some other papers, "if his father signed over his rights to Jun, then you can have temporary custody of him until the emancipation papers can be filed."
Anna's dad looked at Jun. "Would that be ok with you, Jun?"
Jun hesitated. The Greens would have temporary legal guardianship of him. They would be his temporary parents...but at the same time, it might make things easier with the court battle if he shows the court that he doesn't want to be with his father anymore. "Yes, that would be fine. As long as it is alright with you."
"Then we will sign the papers," Anna's mom said.
"Excuse me," Anna said. "I have to go to the bathroom," she said standing and left.
Anna's parents watched her leave then looked back at the lawyer. "What about Mr. Higarashi forfeiting his right to Jun?" Anna's dad asked.
The lawyer picked up the phone and called a friend. They sat in patience while he talked. He put the phone down and smiled. "It seems that he gave his rights up to Jun the day Jun talked to the reporters with Anna," he said. He slid the papers to Anna's parents. "All you have to do is sign."
Anna looked in the mirror. Where would this leave her and Jun if he became part of her family? What would people think of Jun? She didn't want to ruin his honor anymore than she already had. Would Jun still want to be with her when all this was over?
While on the car ride home, Jun sent Rei a text about what was going on. She told him that she'd be there tomorrow and not to be afraid. He smirked at that. That was so much easier said than done. Then again, a lot of the things he'd been doing lately had been easier said than done. It had been so much easier just to let his father have his way and hide it then to actually try and confront his father. Yet here he was doing it anyways.
When they got back to Anna's house, he opted out of dinner. He didn't really think that he could hold anything down right now even if he tried.
Anna begged her parents again to let her go. "Please, I'll wait with Rei outside the actual room you guys will be in."
"No, Anna. And that's final," her father said. They were speaking English.
"We don't want you to have to sit there all day knowing nothing and being uncomfortable while we do this. You are better off herr in your own home not knowing anything," her mother said.
"I promised Jun..." Anna started again.
"Any more about this, Anna, and you are grounded," her dad said sternly.
Anna pouted. "I can't believe you are separating us!" she yelled then ran upstairs.
Anna's mom sighed. "I don't want her being part of the things she doesn't have to be. We are doing the right thing by keeping her here right?"
Her dad nodded. "Yes, of course."
Anna sat down on the couch. "My parents are going to be the laughing stock of this city," Anna said in near tears. "First I have a picture of me half naked with you then I ruin my dad's career, and now people think I'm carrying your child. Why don't I just push them down the stairs while I'm at it?
