Jun watched Anna's parents and smiled. "Yes, please." When she put the waffle on his plate, he leaned over and kissed her cheek. "I think we should keep the sake from your dad at the wedding."
Anna laughed. "He's just having issues. He will be fine." They ate and Anna packed some leftovers for Reisha's lunch. She hadn't had an American breakfast yet. It would be a treat. The ride to school was calm. When they got there, however, Anna's stomach was doing flip-flops. They got out and she looked around. Like usually, everyone ignored her. She smiled. "Maybe today won't be so bad."
Jun was tense. "Don't say that just yet," he whispered. He didn't know how long their good fortune would last.
"Jun! Anna!" Reisha seemed to appear out of nowhere. She slammed into both of them while hugging them. "Congratulations!" Her eyes fell on Anna's hand as all the blood drained from her face. "Wow," she whispered. "Did you sell the house to get that?"
Anna moved her hand behind her back. She blushed. "No...though it was more money than I had seen my entire life..."
Reisha's voice had carried and now peopled were looking their way. As long as Reisha didn't say anything about the actual engagement, they would be ok. Anna pushed her hand in her jacket pocket.
Jun gave Reisha and look and she quickly quieted down. "Sorry," she mumbled when she realized people were looking at them. "I'm just excited!" Quickly changing the subject she looked at Jun. "So, you nervous?"
"Terrified," he laughed. "The media is going to eat this up."
"No, I mean about your event today."
Jun looked at her, confused. "What?"
Reisha rolled her eyes. "Why do you think the headmaster only suspended you for three days? It was so you would be back in time for your match today! How could you forget?"
Jun groaned. "Well, I sort of had other things on my mind," he told her.
"Well, Takashi sensei is waiting for you. You might as well go ahead. You're excused from classes today."
Jun looked at Anna. She seemed very confused. "You think you'll be able to manage without me for a couple of hours?"
Anna shrugged. "I'll be ok..." As long as she finds a way to hide the ring all day...and for the rest of her natural born life! "Good luck and all that," she said and smiled.
Jun smirked as he leaned forward and kissed her. "Thanks, I'll need it." He didn't care what the others thought. They already knew they were going out. It wasn't as if them kissing should be a big deal.
Reisha looked at Anna. "So you're really going to do it? You're going to...you know?" She didn't want to say the word ‘marriage’ in case people could hear her.
Anna watched Jun walked away. She brought her hand up to her lips and smiled. Slowly, she pushed her hair behind her ear as the cold wind blew at her then put her hand back in her pocket. He kissed her in front of the school. That was a big deal...at least to her.
She turned to Reisha as they started to class. "Well...we talked about it for a long time. I was running a fever when I first asked him...and I didn't think he would agree. But he did...and when my fever broke and I came to my senses I realized I might have made a mistake because he didn't even mention it. However, after we went to his meeting yesterday, he took me to his father's office and brought it up." Anna laughed lightly. "And I broke up with him for a whole five minutes before we agreed that we both wanted this instead." She smiled at Reisha. "And even as I told my mother...I was in shock, but my heart, Rei...it won't stop beating so hard every time I think about spending the rest of my life with him. Maybe we are young and maybe we have only known each other for two months, but by the time the actually date for it comes around...we will know for sure if it's meant forever." She stopped walking. "Am I crazy, Reisha? Are we crazy for doing this?"
Reisha just smiled at her. "I've been telling Jun he's crazy for years; and I think you're crazy too. But that's why you two are perfect for each other." As they got settled into class Reisha was still smiling at the thought. Jun was getting married. She couldn't believe it.
Anna took off her coat and scarf and tried to keep her ring hidden, but as the class went on, the whispers became more than apparent. When lunch came around, Anna traded lunches with Reisha and ignored the whispers. It wasn't until one of the girls came up to her and roughly grabbed her hand.
"You have got to be joking! That ring is huge and no one can afford something like that but Jun!"
Anna snatched her hand back. "It's none of your business..." she whispered. She could stand up to a man ten times her size and yell a a bunch of board directors in Jun's company but she couldn't even look the group of girls in the eyes as they stood over her.
"You haven't even been here but two months! You have to be pregnant!"
"I'm not pregnant..."
"Then you have to be after his money."
Anna started gathering her things. She stood. "I have nothing to say to you."
"But you won't deny it?" She laughed. "This is just priceless. We might not be able to do anything to you, Anna Green. But we can still make your life a living hell."
Anna's heart hurt. "I can take whatever you throw at me."
"We didn't say it was just going to be thrown at you," one of them said. "Jun isn't the only one with money and an influential family." They laughed and walked away.
Anna sat back down and took a deep breath. "What...do you think they meant by that?" she asked Reisha.
Reisha looked at Anna with big eyes. "I'm not certain, but it can't be anything good," she said. She knew the girls in her school could be bitches, but this was going too far.
Anna sighed. "Don't tell Jun. I really don't want him to get suspended again," she mumbled.
For the rest of the day, Anna kept glancing at the girls. They were constantly on their phones and giggling. On more than one occasion, Anna swore they were taking snap shots of her. She was glad when the last bell rang and they changed back into their uniforms. She thought of Jun and how he was doing. It had only been one day and already she missed him.
As soon as school was over Reisha took Anna's hand. "You ready?" she asked excitedly.
"Ready? What am I ready for?" she asked.
"For Jun's match!" She stopped when she realized that Anna had absolutely no idea what she was talking about. Groaning, she proceeded to pull Anna along until they reached the kendo room. The building was nearly a quarter size of the actual school and already most of the students were there.
"This is our equivalent of...football? That's what you watch in America right?" She and Anna grabbed seats as close to the action as possible. "Didn't you ever wonder why Jun was a good fighter?" When Anna gave her a blank look again Reisha groaned. "Just because we're Japanese doesn't mean we're born knowing kung-fu....that's just racist." She stuck out her tongue.
Anna laughed. "I didn't say that!" They took their seats and Anna looked around. The whole school seemed to be there as well as parents and teachers. This was a huge thing. Just like high school football in American. Anna turned to Reisha. "Is Jun any good?"
Reisha nodded. "He's the best at our school. Another reason the girls all like him. He's our equivalent of a star quarterback." She stopped to make sure that she had the analogy correct. "This is the only thing he did that I ever saw his father praise him for. He always came to all of Jun's matches. He thought that kendo was an honorable sport." She smiled at this. Jun had started it to make his father happy, but he soon grew to love kendo.
Soon the two teams showed themselves. Each school had five members. Jun's team wore dark blue and black where as the opposing team wore white and black.
"Now to start today's events we'll have a demonstration by our own Jun Hisaragi!"
Jun bowed before drawing his katana. Several rolled mats were placed on stands around him. Closing his eyes he soon performed his deadly dance. Drawing his blade, he sliced through the first two mats, twirling around, he sliced the next one. Tossing his sword into the air he turned around, caught it, and split the next on in the middle. Thrusting his sword behind him he stabbed the final mat and tossed it into the air. Before it could hit the ground he slashed twice, dividing it equally. The entire school cheered and he bowed once more before taking his position among his team.
"Excellent!" The headmaster was going to be the announcer today. He beamed at his students. "First thing, we'll begin the hand to hand combat." With that the matches began.
Anna's eyes grew wide as she watched Jun in the matches. This was something she knew nothing about. How much more did she not know about Jun? She was marrying him and yet she wasn't even sure what his favorite color was. At some point, she grabbed Reisha's hand while Jun preformed. It was nerve wrecking. The other team seemed so strong.
Juin raised his hands in defense as a high kick was aimed for his face. He blocked it, but the kick sent him skidding across the mat. Before he could regain his footing his opponent went for a foot lock. Jun managed to slip out of it, and opted for a palm thrust to his opponent's chest. Of course it seemed that was what his opponent had been waiting for. First rule of combat, exploit your opponent's weakness. He grabbed Jun's right arm and quickly twisted it back behind him. The pain was nearly unbearable. If he struggled too much he risked re fracturing it.
"Tap out," his opponent yelled.
Jun growled in frustration. Slipping his leg behind his opponents, he grabbed his opponents gi with his left hand. "No," he roared. Using his hip as a counter, he threw his opponent off guard, allowing him to free his right hand and throw his opponent to the ground. From there he aimed a foot at the boy's neck, stopping just inches from his throat.
"Do you concede?"
"Yes," the boy sighed. The entire school erupted in applause.
His next matches were all victories and one draw. The final competition came with swords, or at least their wooden counterparts. Jun donned his gear and prepared himself. Closing his eyes he focused on what he was to do. He had to remain calm and collected. The battlefield was no place for emotions.
His fist bout was a win. So was his second and third. The fourth was nearly a loss, but he saved himself at the end with a quick counter and a thrust to his opponent's face mask. The final bout was between him and the other team's captain. As soon as the match began the entire school fell silent. Their swords were but a blur of motion as they struck and countered each other's attacks in perfect unity. It was a dance. A beautiful yet dangerous dance, and they each knew the moves to it. The first point went to his opponent. Second point to him. Third point to his opponent. Fourth to him. The final round, it came down to whoever could score the first hit.
Their swords locked, Jun realized he didn't have the strength necessary to overpower his opponent which meant that he was going to have to out think him. He was pushed back by sheer brute force, and his opponent’s bokken was aimed for his midsection. Jumping back, he barely managed to avoid the point being scored. In that instant he let his bokken fly into the air. The gasp was audible among the crowd. He could almost hear his opponent smirk. As he went for another blow Jun made his move. Diving beneath the sword, he rolled behind his opponent and caught his sword before it hit the ground. As his opponent turned to face him Jun thrust his sword behind him, slamming it into his opponents mid-section.
"Point, Jun Hisaragi!"
At that instant the entire school erupted into a frenzied applause.
Anna jumped up and started yelling. She clapped and cheered with the rest of the crowd. She was so happy for him. Turning to Reisha, she gave her a huge hug and laughed. "That was amazing!"
Reisha laughed. "Well duh! We wouldn't all watch it if it was boring."
As the crowd cheered Jun, he took off his helmet and bowed before the other team. He took the trophy and held it up for the school to see. His team quickly came over and tossed him up, laughing and cheering as he begged them to let him down.
When it was all over, everyone went to look at the trophy and Jun started to put his armor up so that he could jump in the shower and get his normal clothes back on.
Anna sat back down in her spot while everyone went to look at the trophy and the crowd started to clear. She had no reason to look at it and no reason to leave, Jun was her ride. She covered her hand up as soon as she saw reporters talking to the team's coach. They were getting a statement. She saw a group of girls walk up to the reporter and said something. The reporter froze. They pointed to Anna and Anna's heart picked up. The reporter turned to the camera and talked into it the pointed to Anna and the camera turned to her. Anna stood. She grabbed her bag as the reporters and camera men started heading her way.
In a matter of minutes Anna couldn't move. They surrounded her asking to see her hands and if the engagement was true. They asked if Jun was sleeping in her room and if she was pregnant. Anna felt trapped. She pushed at them but there was no escape. She looked for Reisha but it seemed they had pushed Reisha from her.
As soon as the reporters rushed them Reisha ran to find Jun. Running into the boy's locker room, she quickly grabbed him. "Jun, reporters are swarming Anna. Some of the girls told the press!"
Jun's face turned into a mask of icy hatred. He didn't bother to change out of his iiado and hakama. Instead he just handed his bag to Reisha. "Here, put this in my car and start it for me."
She nodded as he went out to the main area. He couldn't even see Anna amidst the crowd of reporters. "Hey!" he yelled as loudly as he could to get their attention. Pushing through them, he grabbed Anna's hand and pulled her out of there. "First off, yes we are engaged. There will be a formal declaration later. Secondly, she is not pregnant. That's all I'm saying until the wedding day." With that he pulled her close as they headed out to the car. He was pissed beyond reason.
Anna held tightly to Jun. She didn't bother to look behind her. She was terrified that they were being followed. "I think I've gone blind with all the flashing cameras..." She felt like a celebrity. Jun's family had to have been the most popular family in the city.
Anna laughed. "He's just having issues. He will be fine." They ate and Anna packed some leftovers for Reisha's lunch. She hadn't had an American breakfast yet. It would be a treat.
