The nurses were all around Jun. He had flat lined while sleeping. The doctor pressed the twin paddles to his chest. "Clear!" Electricity shot through Jun's body as they tried to revive him. Again they tried, and again. Each time his heart came back slowly only to fail again. On their fourth try his heart finally started up strong again.
"I want him under constant surveillance. Keep a crash cart in his room in case his heart gives out again."
Anna was being held back in the background of the room to keep from rushing over to him. She watched helplessly as she fought to get to him. Her vision was blurred with tears and even though he came back, she wasn't relieved. As the doctor's cleared out, she finally rushed to him. She got to her knees and held his hand while crying. Why was this happening? She stared at the ground. Was it because she was given a second chance that she was being punished by having someone else she loved taken from her? It was unfair...how could everything be so unfair...
Jun slept the rest of the night. Nurses and doctors checked on him every hour, but there were no more alarms. Finally he awoke sometime early in the morning. A barely audible moan escaped his lips. Pushing the mask off his face, he took a few deep breaths. It hurt to breath, so he put his mask back on. Running his hands over his body, he slowly let them go up to his bandaged head before letting them fall again. He didn't even want to know what he looked like. His eyes drifted downward to blond locks which fell over his leg. His hand gently caressed Anna's hair as she slept.
Anna stirred in her sleep and her eyes slowly opened. They were puffy and blood shot from crying so much. She looked over at Jun and started to cry again. He was awake! He was finally awake again! She threw her upper body on his chest and cried deeply on him wait holding on tightly to his hospital gown.
"You left me! You went under again and you almost didn't come back! You have to try harder, Jun! I need you!" She cried while burying her face into his chest.
Jun ran a hand over her back, but he was so weak it felt like he was barely touching her. "I'm sorry," he said through the mask. Already his eyes were getting heavy.
"Ah, Jun, you're awake." The doctor came in carrying his clipboard. Jun was already growing to hate him.
It took every ounce of strength that Jun could must to try to sit up. He removed the mask so that he could talk to the doctor, even though it made it uncomfortable to breath.
"I thought we might have lost you there sometime during the night."
"I'm a fighter," Jun said through coughs.
The doctor nodded. "I know you're still weak...but I'd like to get you started on chemo as soon as possible. It will drain you...but it will help to keep everything at bay until we're able to check to see if it's gone for good."
Anna pulled back from Jun. She sat back in her chair and listened to the doctor talk. Chemo...that stuff was the thing that put Adam into a comma. She looked over at Jun. Would it happen to him? Would he just go to sleep and never wake up again? Her hands rested in her lap. She was tired and yet she didn't want to sleep unless Jun slept. She didn't want to miss anything. She was all alone in this. What would she do with her life if she lost him?
Jun's hands weakly fisted his sheets. "I want to get better as soon as possible. If that means getting sick in order to get better...I'll do it."
The doctor nodded. "Rest up. You'll need your strength. We'll start your first session this afternoon."
Jun didn't say anything as the doctor walked out. He just looked at Anna. For the first time the tiniest bit of fear showed in his face. "I really don't want this," he whispered softly. Chemo terrified him. He'd seen what it had done.... He knew what it could do. He didn't want that to happen to him.
Anna looked away. She didn't want it either. But what other option was there? Nothing. It was all up to Jun. He had to be brave and he had to pull through. He had to be strong. And Anna...had to sit and watch while he suffered. Just like Adam. She had to tell herself it would be different this time. She had to say that God wouldn't take two people she loved from her. She was still hurting from the first one.
Within a few hours his first treatment began. Almost immediately after it, he had a hard time keeping his food down. Anytime he even smelled food he threw up. After a week of treatment, he'd lost nearly twenty pounds. They had him on an IV drip to give him nutrients. If someone touched him with even a slight amount of pressure his skin would bruise. He was so frail, and moving seemed to tire him out. As he slept, the doctor came in to talk to Anna.
"The tests are proving to be...effective in keeping the cancer at bay; but I'm afraid that we're going to have to increase his dosage if we want to beat this."
Anna's hands fisted.
"He's a fighter," Adam's doctor said, "but if we want to get rid of all of it, we have to up the dose a bit."
"Will...will that cure him?" Anna's mother asked as Anna stood next to her and her dad.
"Yes, there is a huge chance that he will be cured from it. However, there is also a chance that it could put him in a coma," the doctor admitted.
Anna's parents looked at each other.
"A coma is when he goes to sleep for a long time right?" Anna asked while pulling at the doctor's coat.
He smiled at her. "Yes, Anna. It means he goes to sleep for a long time."
"Adam is small, but he is strong enough. He'll wake up. I know he will!" Anna said looking at her parents.
Anna's father patted Anna's head and nodded. "Let's do it then."
Anna looked at Jun. Tears rolled down her cheeks. Is he strong enough? She thought Adam was...but...she was wrong. She brushed Jun's cheek. "He'll...make it...I know he will," she whispered. "Do what you think is best."
The doctor nodded and left the room. No sooner had he left then Reisha stuck her head in. "How is he doing?" She didn't really need to ask. She could see for herself. She could barely believe that the person in the bed was Jun. He didn't look like himself at all. Not the strong, charismatic, and sweet guy that she'd known all these years. He looked too frail and weak...not at all like Jun.
"I thought," she said slowly, holding up a DVD. "The kids at school made this for him. I thought it might cheer him up. It's got the video of his kendo tournament in it."
Anna shrugged. "He hasn't woken up for hours and when he is awake, all he wants is to go back to sleep. The thought is nice though," she said and sat down again. She could no longer hold his hand because he bruised too much. Other then a feathered touch, she could do nothing but lay her head next to him.
Reisha walked over and sat the DVD beside flowers and balloons which had been sent to him. "How are you doing?" She couldn't imagine what this must be like for her, and in all honesty she really didn't want to imagine. It was hard enough being his friend and seeing him like this; but being his wife and the mother of his child.... She was amazed that Anna was doing as well as she was.
Again, she shrugged. "The second time isn't so hard. You know what to expect...you get prepared for the lose." She looked at Reisha. "I forgot you don't know...I had a little brother who had cancer. He had chemo and surgery..." She laid her head down and watched Jun. "It's hard...knowing that I might be all alone if he doesn't pull through. I'll have to raise this baby all on my own. At this point...I wish I was dying. I wish I could just fade. I know I'm suppose to be strong, but I'm tired of putting on a brave face. I don't want to pretend anymore. I'm tired, and I want him back. Until I get him back I'll stay here wishing I was dead."
Reisha started to say something, but she fell silent. What could she say?
"Don't say that." Jun's eyes weren't open, and his voice could barely be heard above the sound of the machines and his mask. "I'm sorry...that you have to go through this again...because of me."
Anna looked at him. She looked at the clock. She timed the moments he was awake. Ten minutes was the most he had stayed awake. Anna lifted her head off the bed. Slowly her fingers feathered his cheek. "Don't worry. I don't blame you. You worry about getting better, ok?" she whispered. It was hard knowing she only had ten minutes at the most before he would black out again. And she couldn't do anything other than talk to him. "Don't talk, ok? It wastes energy. And you need your energy."
Jun smiled. Not that she could see it. "Talking is all I get to do anymore." He turned his head so that he could look at Rei. His hand shook as he reached up to move his mask. "Hi, Rei." He turned his head so that he could cough.
Reisha tried to bite back the tears as she looked at him. "Hi, Jun-chan," she said, her voice barely managing to get above a whisper.
Jun smiled. He wanted to say more, but his hands came up and slid the mask back over his face so that he could breath. There was a knock at the door and the doctor came in. "It's time for your next treatment," he said, looking at Anna and Reisha. "We're going to try a larger dosage and some new stuff. Hopefully it'll stop it and all of this can stop."
Anna said her goodbyes and watched them roll him away. "They are going to kill him..." she whispered to herself and started to cry again. "It's just not fair."
"They're not going to kill him," Reisha told her. She looked down at Anna and rubbed her back. "Come on. While he's going through chemo why don't we go to the cafeteria to get something to eat?" Maybe being away from Jun's room would do her some good. It wasn't as if she had anything else to do while he was gone.
"I don't want to eat. I don't want to sleep. I don't want to leave. I want to sit right here and wait. Wait for them to tell me it's over and he's ok and we can go home," she said and sat back in her chair. "I hate this place...I hate these people. I hate this life."
"Please, don't talk like that, Anna." Reisha sighed and looked at her. "At least take a walk with me. Jun's going to be in there a while right? Well, why don't we go get him something to cheer him up? Or go and get you some chocolate?" She didn't know what to do or say. She'd never had to deal with anything like this before. She just wanted to cheer her friends up the best she could, but it didn't seem that anything she did would really help.
Anna shook her head. "I'm waiting. I have to be here. I have to always be here just in case something happens," she said. "Just...stop worrying about me. Jun needs it more than me."
"Jun has an entire hospital worrying about him," she sighed.
Sitting down, she waited with Anna. Neither really said a word, so the time passed slowly. Four hours. Five hours. Six hours later and still Jun wasn't taken back to their room. "Does it usually take this long?" Reisha asked with a yawn.
Anna shook her head. "No..." Something was wrong. She knew it a long time ago, but she had no idea where they took Jun so there was no finding him. She feared the worse and while the tears streamed down her face, she waited for the doctor to come in and tell her the bad news.
A nurse came in about twenty minutes later. She was looking at a chart when she walked in. "Well, how is Mr. Higarashi-" She stopped and looked up. "Oh.... Did they take him for more chemo? I didn't think he was scheduled for two doses today." She began to flip through the paperwork to see if she missed something.
Anna shot up from her chair. "He's been gone for six hours! Where the hell did you take him!" she demanded.
The nurse fell back slightly. "Well, he was suppose to be in his room an hour ago," she stammered. "The doctor didn't authorize a room change...so I'm not certain where he is."
Reisha's jaw dropped. "How could you lose a patient?"
"I-I don't know." She was already calling people into the room. "An orderlies was suppose to wheel him in here after his chemo."
Anna grabbed her purse. "Call the police!"
She ran out of the room wrecking her brain. She knew Eric had him. That was the only explanation. But where... then it hit here. The two doves. He got pass the security system at the house which meant he could do it again. Anna sent a text to Reisha telling her to send the cops to her hours. Anna got in the car and sped home. An ambulance was in her yard.
Getting out she walked to her door and opened it. "Where are you, bastard!" Anna screamed and let it echo in her home.
"Shh!" Eric held a finger to his lips as he danged a knife above Jun's throat. Jun was thrown onto the couch, all the stuff that kept him alive was now gone and his breathing was labored. "He's sleeping," Eric chuckled.
Anna moved towards him. "Get away from him. You never even wanted him," she said looked at Jun. "Please...just give him back the mask to breath."
