Yumi, Revisited
Yumi made it to her room. She flopped down onto her bed and
groaned. This wasn't what she wanted. She buried her face into her
pillow.
“Damn it!” she said to herself. There came a knock on her door.
“Go away!” she shouted.
“It's only me,” Toshiki said. Yumi lifted her head as the door
opened. The veteran poked his head inside.
“You okay?” he asked. Yumi sighed and rolled her eyes.
“No,” she said. Toshiki walked into the room and closed the door
behind him.
“The Ito family is sure chatty,” he said. Yumi just looked at him.
Toshiki fished for something to say.
“I don't like them,” Yumi said. He frowned.
“Why?” he asked. She sat up on her bed.
“They are too nosy,” the girl complained. “She always asking
questions. Too many questions.” She wrinkled up her nose.
“Oh…” he said.
“Yeah,” Yumi said. She laid back on her bed. Toshiki walked over
and stood next to her bed. Her mood changed.
“So,” Yumi said. “How long are you going to keep me waiting?”
Toshiki looked confused.
“Huh?” he asked. Yumi sat up and leaned forward, grinning.
“Are you going to marry me or not?” she asked. Toshiki froze.
“I don't understand,” he said.
“Understand what?” Yumi asked. The veteran lifted his chin.
“Why are you so interested in me?” he asked. “I'm too old for you.
You're so young. You shouldn't be thinking about marriage now. So…
why?”
“I love you,” she said.
“But you don't know me,” he said. “We've only known each other for
three months.”
“Does it matter?”
“Well, yes. Yes, it does.” What was she not getting? This wasn't a
silly crush either. She meant to have him. And she wouldn't take no
for an answer.
However, that wasn't the only thing. Her stubbornness was so
familiar.
“Who are you?” Toshiki asked.
“I'm Yumi,” Yumi said. She said that so easily. It was so weird.
She held out her hand.
“Sit with me,” the girl said. “At least until they leave.” Toshiki
shrugged. Not like anything was going to happen, right? He sat down
on her bed next to her. She rested her head on his shoulder.
“Thanks,” Yumi said.
“Sure,” Toshiki said. This felt familiar. But he couldn't place
where or why. This was going to drive him crazy. For now, they just
had to hide from the neighbors. How long was that going to take? He
didn't know.
“You didn't answer my question,” Yumi said. The veteran froze.
“Huh?” he asked. She didn't respond. Instead, she slowly closed her
eyes.
“Are you going to sleep?” Toshiki asked.
“No,” she said. “Just thinking.” He didn't even try.
Who is Yumi?
