Romance Fan Fiction / Other Fan Fiction ❯ Stars Above - A Cassunzel Fanfic ❯ Chapter 21: United and Intertwined ( Chapter 21 )
Rapunzel paced and forth in front of the hospital room that was assigned to Cassandra. She had practically run most of the way to the village before she was able to call Fidella. Owl scouted the place and gave her a confirmation hoot to say it was safe. Rapunzel didn’t care about that. Her only concern was to save her lover. She had cuts on her arms from running blindly in the rain - why does it always rain when something bad happens? - as well as her legs, but she didn’t care. The doctor tried to get her to get checked out, but she outright refused. Repeatedly.
After Rapunzel made it to the village and got Cassandra to a hospital, most of the adrenaline faded and she realized that she didn’t leave unscathed from the battle with Gothel. She had a gash on her arm as well as bruising around her midsection, but she didn’t care. Cassandra was currently fighting for her life as the doctor worked hard to save her. A couple scrapes and bruises were nothing.
Once Rapunzel arrived in the village, Cassandra had stopped breathing all together. Her skin was cold to the touch and she was incredibly pale. Rapunzel thought she had lost her already and that she was too late but when she let out a quiet groan and her chest started rising, she had never been more happy. But that didn’t mean Cassandra was out of the woods yet. Rapunzel must’ve paced outside of Cass’s room more than a 100 times. Cass had been out cold for nearly four days as the doctors tried anything and everything to save her life. There was still no guarantee that she was even gonna wake up. But Rapunzel kept hope that she would. Cass was strong, really strong, she’d pull through. Right? She always did. At least, that was what Rapunzel kept telling herself.
The annoying, but well-meaning, nurses and doctors continuously tried to get her to eat and check out the small wounds she had, but she refused every time. She couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, could barely even breathe, until she knew that Cass was gonna be okay. It was then that the doctor came out of the room, his doctor attire and gloved hands covered in blood. Rapunzel rushed over to him, nearly knocking Pascal off her shoulder. Rapunzel gave Pascal an apologetic look but he gave her a ‘no biggie’, understanding smile. “How is she? Is she..?” Rapunzel’s breath caught in her throat as she waited for the answer.
The doctor gave her a tired small and shook his head. “She’s alive. She’s stable.” Rapunzel let go of the breath she was holding. “She came too a couple of times, asking for you.”
“Why didn’t you come and get me?!”
“She fell unconscious again before we could. She’s stable but for how long, it is unsure. She lost a lot of blood. Now, the fact that she’s still alive is a good sign. Her body will revive the blood on its own, with the help of medication that will help move that along faster, but it’s going to take time. Until she can regain some energy, she’s going to be weak, and possibly in a daze now and then. We have her on a serious amount of painkillers so that may add to her being dazed or in other words, out of it.”
“But she’s going to be okay?” Rapunzel asked, her voice hopeful.
The doctor nodded. “Yes, she’s going to be just fine.”
“Oh, thank goodness.” Rapunzel placed a hand over her chest as she let out a long-needed deep breath. The breath she had probably been holding for the last couple of days.
“But it’s vitally important that she doesn’t move too much, she has enough fluids and she takes the medication as instructed.”
Rapunzel nodded quickly. “Of course. I’ll make sure of all of that.”
The doctor nodded before he placed a hand on her shoulder. “Your work saved her life. It was well done, for a situation as critical as it was, and done carefully. Have you ever considered becoming a medical professional?”
Rapunzel shrugged and gave the doctor an appreciative smile. “It’s not my calling sir, but thank you for the compliment.”
“Oh please, call me Rick.”
Rapunzel smiled. “Okay... Rick.” Then Rapunzel, in a blinding moment of gratefulness and relief, hugged the taller man before whispering. “Thank you. Thank you so much for not giving up on her.”
The doctor smiled and patted her on the back. “She’s a fighter. I could tell by just looking at her.”
Rapunzel pulled away from him and smiled. “Yeah, she is.”
“Now,” The doctor said seriously. “Will you let me check your wounds now?”
“They’re not that bad,” Rapunzel mumbled.
“Maybe not, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.” Rapunzel sighed then nodded and agreed.
It had been two hours since Rapunzel entered Cassandra’s room. She hadn’t moved from her side since she sat down next to her bed. Rick had checked her wounds and as she already knew, they weren’t anything life-threatening. Her arm had to be re-bandaged every couple of hours and she had to put some kind of weird ointment on the bruising nearing her midsection but other than that, it was nothing serious. No internal injuries, no broken bones, nothing of the sort. Rick, and many other nurses, still tried to get her to eat something, or get some rest, but she still refused. She wanted to be there when Cass woke up in case she needed her.
So far, Cass hadn’t stirred. Rapunzel was exhausted, physically and mentally, and she was worried as all hell. Yes, Rick told her she was gonna be fine, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t still worried. When Rapunzel started to doze off by accident, she heard a quiet groan. Snapping her head up and fixing her posture, Rapunzel leaned forward hopefully.
“Cass?” Rapunzel held her breath as she waited; hoping that she would wake.
Her prayers were answered when Cass’s teal eyes slowly fluttered open and she placed a hand on her head, followed by another low groan. “Raps?” She asked weakly.
Rapunzel’s eyes filled with tears as she heard her beloved nickname come from her lover's mouth. She thought she would never hear it again. She almost went to jump out and hug Cassandra but she remembered her wounds. “Oh, thank goodness you’re okay!”
Cassandra groaned and turned her head towards her. “What happened?”
“Y-You blacked out and stopped breathing - you wouldn’t wake up, they tried everything! And I was so scared - I t-thought I lost you a-and I couldn’t - you... - y-you weren’t responding, you w-wouldn’t wake up, a-and, a-nd..” The poor girl was pretty much hyperventilating at this point.
“Woah, woah,” Cassandra reached out and placed her hand on top of Rapunzel’s. ”Breathe, Rapunzel.” Rapunzel took a couple of deep, shallow breaths as she tried to calm herself. “Wait, how did we get here? Where is here?”
“A village, only a mile away from the cave. And u-uh.. I-I carried you...”
“You carried me? For nearly a mile?” Cassandra asked in disbelief.
Rapunzel nodded slowly. “I didn’t really have any other choice.”
“Remind me to never doubt your strength again.” Cassandra teased, hoping to get a smile out of her. This time, her attempt didn’t work as Rapunzel slowly shook her head and squeezed Cassandra’s hand, afraid to let go. This time, her near death experience must’ve been way too close than any other time for Rapunzel still looked horror-struck and exhausted. Cassandra’s eyes softened as she reached her hand forward and brushed Rapunzel’s messy and out of place hair out of her face before resting it on her cheek. “Hey, it’s okay love. I’m okay.” She whispered.
“I-I really thought that this time...” Tears spilled over as Rapunzel stopped, incapable of finishing that sentence.
Cassandra bit her lower lip as Rapunzel’s expression went downward. She must’ve really scared her. Cassandra moved over only slightly and patted the spot next to her. “...Come here.” She said softly. Rapunzel looked up and seemed hesitant. “It’s okay, Raps. You won’t hurt me.” Rapunzel seemed to relax a little as she climbed into the bed and lay next to her. Cassandra smiled and placed a small kiss on her forehead as Rapunzel cuddled into her without bothering her wounds. “I’m sorry I scared you, Rapunzel.” Cassandra said softly.
Rapunzel shook her head and pressed closer. “I felt so lost.. I-I can’t lose you, not again... I-I just can’t..” She sounded so scared and heartbroken. It broke Cassandra’s heart as she frowned and pulled her closer.
“I’m not going anywhere. I promised you, didn’t I?” Rapunzel nodded. “I don’t break promises, you know that. I wasn’t gonna give up so easily, without a fight. I’ve pulled through every other time, haven’t I?”
Rapunzel suddenly pulled back to look her in the eye. “This time was different, Cass. You basically died and they almost weren’t able to revive you. T-This time, it was too close... way too close..” Rapunzel placed both hands on Cassandra’s cheeks and gently rubbed her thumbs across them. “You need to be more careful, Cass. We’ve been lucky the last couple times, but the next...” Rapunzel shook her head. “W-When I saw you, laying there in a puddle of blood..” Rapunzel took a shaky breath. “What happened, Cass? It’s not like you to have your guard down like that.”
“Honestly? I don’t know. I don’t remember. She must’ve gotten into my head, again.. and I must’ve got lost in my own rage, again.”
“You need to learn to get that under control!” Rapunzel whispered harshly. Rapunzel didn’t miss the slight hurt expression that crossed Cassandra’s face. “I’m not scared of you Cassandra, I never will be, and before I thought that it wasn’t gonna be a problem.. that it wasn’t a problem that needed fixing. But if it’s putting your life in danger.. you need to get better control.”
“I’ve tried, Raps, I really have. But she - she just gets in my head, hits all my lowest points and I just get so... angry. She raised you and yet she’s trying to hurt you, us, she traumatized and hit you, she abandoned me and she’s still so cocky, like she has no regrets, like she doesn’t care that she’s trying to hurt someone that she use to call her daughter - and someone who she gave birth too. It’s just so.. so infuriating. I don’t understand how it doesn’t bother you.”
“Do you really think that it doesn’t bother me?” Rapunzel asked harshly but softly. “Cass, I’m mad too! Really mad. But you can’t let her get into your head! That’s what she wants! For you to end up destroying yourself. She also hopes it will lead you to attack me as well in a fit of rage. She wants to break us and she’s going to keep trying and end up succeeding, if you don’t learn to get your emotions under control! I can’t keep going through this over and over again, Cass. I can’t keep almost losing you, I can’t keep being worried if I’m ever gonna see you again! You’re my whole world and the only family I have left. I-if you die... I die. I can’t bear to lose you. Not again. Never again.” Rapunzel took a shaky breath. “You say that you’ve been trying to get yourself under control, but really, you haven’t. This is not something you’re gonna be able to do on your own, Cassandra. If you want us to work, you need to learn how to start trusting me more.”
“I do trust you, Raps, it’s just-”
“Just what? There’s no excuse. If you trusted me like you claim you do, you would let me help.”
“There’s not really anything you can do.” Cassandra mumbled.
“See? That’s what I’m talking about! You don’t believe that-”
Cassandra snapped her eyes back to her, her eyes angry. “Rapunzel, there’s not anything we can do about it. I’ve tried everything; it just happens in the spur of the moment. I can’t control it-”
“That’s what you keep telling yourself to avoid facing the problem.”
“That’s not-”
“For once, shut up and let me talk!” Rapunzel seethed. Cassandra shut her mouth quickly. She never heard Rapunzel talk to her like that, or anyone; it surprised her enough to shut her up. Well, she might’ve been a little scared too, but she wasn’t gonna admit that. “Ugh! You’re so stubborn! Even after all this time, you’re still hesitant to accept my help, or any help for that matter. I can’t go through this again, Cass! If you keep putting me on this emotional rollercoaster of ‘will the next time be the last?’ or ‘will I lose her today?’, Cassandra, we’re not gonna work! I-I can’t spend the rest of my life worrying whether or whether not your life is gonna be put on the line! I love you too damn much to keep watching you carelessly putting your life in danger! The moonstone is a lot of things, but it does not make you invincible! E-Everyday.. Everyday I’m terrifed that I’m going to lose you because of some careless, stupid decision!” Cassandra opened her mouth to argue, an annoyed expression on her face, but Rapunzel shot her glare that made any arguments die on her tongue. “I can’t take it anymore, Cass...” Rapunzel said softer this time, her tone heartbroken and her eyes filled with more tears. “I can’t. I need you. I can’t keep going through everyday terrified of losing you and feeling like that day is the last, and I have to make the most of it... I just can’t. So if you won’t do it for yourself, do it for me, please.”
Cassandra looked deep into her eyes before sighing. “Okay.”
“Okay?” Rapunzel asked, hopeful.
Cassandra nodded. “Okay. We can work on it. Together.”
“Do you promise? This means telling me every single negative emotion that crosses your mind, even if it’s directed towards me.”
Cassandra smiled and gently placed her hand on Rapunzel’s cheek. “I promise.”
Rapunzel, finally, gave her a sweet smile before leaning forward and planted a small peck on her lips then whispered: “Thank you.”
Cassandra nodded and smiled then her eyes softened as she rested her forehead against Rapunzel’s and closed her eyes. “I’m so sorry, Raps. I would never leave you, not if I could help it..”
Rapunzel smiled. “I know, Cass. But next time - don’t go charging into a dangerous situation without me, hm?” She teased.
Cassandra chuckled. “Fine.” Then she smiled sweetly. “You know, despite the circumstances, this reminds me of our first kiss; the day we admitted to each other.”
Rapunzel smiled. “Me too, Cass. Could do without the almost dying part though.” She grinned. “Oh! And speaking of that day...” Rapunzel gave her an amused smile.
Cassandra’s eyes lit up in realization. “No.. No! You can’t be serious..!”
Rapunzel laughed. “Oh, I totally am!” Rapunzel grabbed the bottle of medication and presented it to Cassandra with a grin.
Cassandra groans. “No way. The last time-”
“You were adorable. At least this time you don’t have any secrets.”
“I’m gonna make a fool of myself.” Cassandra groaned again.
“Hey, look on the bright side, it’ll only be in front of me.”
“How is that the ‘bright side’? Whatever happens, you’re never gonna let me live it down!”
“Depends what happens.” Rapunzel grinned mischievously.
“Raps!”
Rapunzel laughed. “Alright, alright. Whatever happens, stays in this room and stays between us.”
Cassandra huffed. “Promise?”
“I promise.”
Rapunzel knew exactly when Cassandra’s medication kicked in due to the fact that she could barely keep her head up. Giggling, Rapunzel continued to draw in her notebook. “Don’t you dare draw me, Rapunzel.” Cassandra’s sloppy and sluggish voice suddenly rang out.
Rapaunzel groaned and put down her journal. Even when she was in a loopy state, she still knew her better than she knew herself. It was equally annoying as it was adorably amazing. “Come on, Cass!”
Cassandra gave her a weak glare. “You promised.”
Rapunzel pouted and mumbled a couple curse words under her breath before putting her journal back in her bag. She crossed her arms with a pout. “You’re no fun.” Cassandra rolled her eyes and shook her head with an amused smile. Rapunzel sighed and moved towards her. “How are you feeling?” She placed a hand on her forehead to see if she still had a fever.
Cassandra swatted her hand away. “I feel fine, Raps.”
“You sure?”
Cassandra shook her head. “You worry too much.”
“Says the one who won’t even let me go 20 feet without a chaperone.” Rapunzel teased. Cassandra opened her mouth then shut it, knowing she was right. Rapunzel couldn’t hold back a triumphant smirk.
“Wipe that smirk off your face.”
“What are you gonna do if I don’t?”
“Raps..” Cass warned.
Rapunzel giggled and placed her pointer finger on the tip of her nose. “Face it, you can’t do anything. You’re bedridden. Besides, you’re too cute to be threatening right now.”
“Yeah, just wait, I won’t be bedridden forever.” Cass mumbled.
“Got a good month to prepare then.”
Cassandra’s eyes widened. “A month?!” Cassandra whined. “You can’t make me stay in this godforsaken bed for a month!”
“I can and I will.”
“Raps!”
Rapunzel gave her a reprimanding glare. “You lost a fair amount of blood. You’re not leaving this room until you’re at full strength.”
“But-”
“There’s no buts about it!”
“But two weeks is more than enough!”
“I’m not risking anything.”
“Fine,” Cassandra pouted and crossed her arms. Rapunzel shook her head with a smile. Something must’ve crossed Cassandra’s mind cause suddenly her face fell. Rapunzel noticed her staring at the yellow bracelet tied around her wrist.
Rapunzel grew concerned instantly. “What’s wrong, Cass?”
Cassandra slowly raised her head to meet her eyes. “My bracelet..” She said slowly. “....I didn’t mean too..”
Rapunzel knew about the tattered bracelet, she saw it almost immediately but didn’t pay it no thought because she was too focused on saving Cassandra. Rapunzel’s eyes softened. Cass looked dejected and genuinely upset. Rapunzel placed her hand on top of hers. “Hey, it’s okay Cass. It’s just an object, it can be remade.”
Cassandra shook her head. “But it’s not! It was important.. to me.. it was a remembrance of the first time we were brought together. The first time in my life that I felt like... I mattered to someone. It held so many important memories. When I left Corona, while I was on the road, that bracelet was the one thing that reminded me that I still had a home to go back to, someone to go back too, someone who cared about me. Even on the worst nights, when I wanted to give up, it and all the memories it held, kept me going.” Rapunzel was surprised at what she was admitting but then she reminded herself that this was drugged, open-booked Cass. She was honestly touched. Her bracelet, their bracelets, had always been gravely important to her. Cass was right, those bracelets are what sealed their friendship. She always thought her feelings towards the small objects were just one-sided. Apparently Cass still had some secrets of her own.
Rapunzel leaned forward and hooked her hand under Cassandra’s chin, directing her eyes back to hers as she gave her a sweet smile. “Then I’ll make new ones and we can make new memories.” Rapunzel took off her own bracelet. “I made these when we were friends. But now.. we’re more. We’ve had bad moments, mostly good, and yeah, this kept me going too. Especially when you had the Moonstone for the first time. It was how I reminded myself to keep fighting and not give up because we had - have - something special. But now.. everything has changed. We’ve changed. Our relationship has changed. So, I think it's time we make new ones. Keep all the memories in our hearts and let go of the past and move forward. We’ve grown and so should these.” Rapunzel’s face lit up, suddenly remembering something important. “Hold on, I have something.” She got up and went to get her bag then pulled it towards her as Cassandra watched her with a cute tilt of her head. Rapunzel pulled out a box, a small one, and Cassandra could see the blush that filled her face. “I-I know that you’re not really a... celebratory type so..”
Rapunzel opened the box and Cassandra couldn’t help but widen her eyes. Two rings sat in the box; beautifully crafted rings made with immense love and extra care. Cassandra traced the carefully carved words on the rings. ‘Tu es ma lumière’. Cassandra didn’t miss how the rings were a mixed blue and gold color with the sun and moon combined together in the middle. They were breathtaking, amazing and made with so much love Cassandra could practically feel it. Cassandra looked up at her in disbelief. “Raps, this is..” She couldn’t seem to find the words.
Rapunzel blushed and brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “I started making them about a month after we started dating; hoping that one day...” Rapunzel trailed off then smiled and continued. “After you asked me to marry you, I finished the final touches. I was waiting for the right time... and right now felt as good as any.”
“Let’s get married then.” Cassandra responded, a tint of excitement in her voice.
Rapunzel gave her a confused look. “Right now?”
“Yes, right now,” Cassandra responded before pushing herself up into more of a sitting position and turned towards Rapunzel. “There’s no time like the present, right?”
Rapunzel couldn’t help but smile. “Alright.”
“So.. yes?” Cassandra asked in hopeful clarification.
Rapunzel’s smile widened. “Yes.”
“Really? You’re serious, right? You’re not messing with me?” Rapunzel couldn’t help but giggle at the kiddush enthusiasm in her voice.
“I’m serious.”
“I’m kinda surprised, I thought you would want a big wedding or something.”
Rapunzel smiled sweetly. “It doesn’t matter to me, Cass. I don’t need some big fancy wedding. As long as I’m bound to you.. nothing else matters. Besides, I’m a princess, so I can make it legally official without getting someone we don’t trust involved.” She winked.
Cassandra softened as she raised her hand and placed it on Rapunzel’s cheek then she signaled for her to come closer. Rapunzel crawled on the bed and they both sat face to face, their lips barely inches apart; a forever, happy smile planted on their faces. “So, how do we start this off, princess?” Cassandra teased.
Rapunzel laughed. “Start with vows, I guess.” Rapunzel blushed, remembering that Cass wasn’t one for big emotional stuff. “Or we can just skip to-”
“No, it’s okay.” Cassandra interrupted with a smile then she blushed deeply. “I-I want.. too.” Rapunzel, although surprised, smiled and nodded and waited as she gathered her thoughts. Cassandra took a shaky breath after almost a minute and started: “Rapunzel, ever since I met you.. you’ve brought light and joy into my life. You changed my life, my point of view on life, and you restored the hope I lost so long ago. I have always been able to be.. myself around you; who I really am. The part of me that I pushed down so far that... I didn’t think I could get it back. But I did. You did. You taught me how to be myself. You taught me that it was okay to not be okay. You taught me how to make friends and how to keep those friends. You taught me... how to love. How to love myself and how to love others. From the very beginning, I always felt connected to you. I felt complete. Whole. You were my other half, the missing piece I didn’t even know I was missing. It took me.. a while to realize that. Took me years. But once I realized it.. I promised myself I would never let go. Whether we were together as friends or as a couple, I just wanted to be by your side in whatever way you would have me. You’re my destiny and always have been. The destiny I searched for, the destiny I ran away from, the destiny I tried to fight, the destiny that had been in front of my face all along. I let darkness take hold of me and you freed me from it. You brought the sun and freed me from my own dark thoughts that brought me down for so long. Being with you - it just feels right. It feels real. I can relax around you, I can let down my guard, I can just... be who I am without worrying about being judged for it. Ever since we left Corona, nearly a year ago… has been the most amazing, happiest moments of my life. You are a literal angel from heaven. You bring love and joy into everyone’s lives and show them how to do the same. I’ve changed into a person that.. I’m proud of. A person that I’m starting to learn how to love. And it’s all because of you. You’re my best friend, my light, my love, my hope and I will give my life to you, my soul, and so much more. My whole life, I searched for my purpose in life, why I was here.. I thought it was a thing. A job. A goal I needed to work for. And I would always get so mad when it was stripped from me - because I tried so hard. I would get frustrated because nothing stuck, nothing ever felt right. I didn’t understand why - but I finally found my answer this year. My purpose, my destiny, wasn’t some meaningless career like being in the guard, or achieving power and greatness... It was a person. It was you. I know that you think you didn’t do anything special.. and it’s one of the things I love about you; how humble you are. But what you’ve done for me... it’s everything to me. It means everything to me. It’s important to me. And... I have never been more in awe at the fact that you chose me. You dropped everything and you chose me. And I will forever be grateful for that. You are.. Without you, I’m not me. I’m not whole. A life where you aren’t in it is a life not worth living. You are my missing piece, my better half, and everything I have ever hoped for in this life. You’re a dream, Raps. And I love you with every fiber of body, with everything I am, and I will spend the rest of our lives showing you that, I promise you. I love you so much, Rapunzel. And just.. Thank you. For everything you’ve done for me. For being there. For never giving up on me. For staying with me even in my worst moments. Even if you weren’t with me, with me, you were still there, just a call away. And for showing me a life I never even dreamt of having.” By the time she was done, Rapunzel was in tears as she tried to hold them back. Cassandra gave her a sweet smile and pressed her forehead to hers. “I love you.”
“I love you too, Cass.” Rapunzel whispered, her voice shaky and full of emotion. Rapunzel then smiled and pulled back, wiping her eyes in the process. “I have.. some things to say too.” Rapunzel cleared her throat and got her emotions under control then she started: “Cassandra, when I first arrived in Corona... I didn’t know anything. I was overwhelmed - I was scared - and I was hurt. Ever since I saw you in that field, I felt something I had never before. For the longest time, I confused it as close friendship. But I realized it was love at first sight. Despite being put up to a job you never even wanted in the first place, you still tried. You took me around Corona, answered every question I had, even when it took hours and you had to work overtime. You taught me a lot of things. But the one that stood out to me the most: you taught me how to be brave. Fearless. You taught me how to be strong and reserved and smart. You treated me like a normal person unlike everyone else who was fake around me because I was a princess. You told me the truth, you let me know when you were upset or mad, and you were real with me. Despite what happened, no matter how I treated you, no matter how much I got you into dangerous situations because of my curiosity, you still stayed by my side and always placed yourself between me and whatever was threatening us. You were there when I was overwhelmed - you risked everything to get me out of the castle just so I would be happy. You risked everything by sneaking me out of Corona - and I will forever be grateful for that. I always felt like you were more to me. I always felt a deeper connection to you. A connection I had never felt before. You are the part of me that’s strong and smart - you are the part of me that helps me be fearless. You are my other half, my love, my life and I love you more than I can even describe. Even after how I treated you during the journey to the Dark Kingdom - you still came back at the end. You still chose me. You’re the most amazing, smart, strongest person I have ever met and I thank whatever god that brought you to me every single day. You mean everything to me, you always have. And losing you would be like losing a part of myself. You’re my moon - and without the moon, the sun cannot shine. You are... the thing that I longed for my entire life. The thing I didn’t even know I was longing for. You’re my freedom, you’re my light in a dark tunnel. I have been able to be a better, more understanding person because of you. You’ve taught me how to live.. how to protect and stand up for what I believe in.. you’re my hero, my inspiration, my world. And I just...” Rapunzel teared up. “....I love you so much.” She ended with a watery whisper.
Must like Rapunzel, Cassandra was in tears. For once, she didn’t even try to hold them back. She let them fall. And so did Rapunzel. Cassandra gave Rapunzel a watery smile as she grasped both of Rapunzel’s cheeks lovingly. Cassandra slipped the ring on Rapunzel’s finger and Rapunzel did the same to Cass. Then they both spoke at the same time:
“I take you to be my wife, my better half, my light,”
“... my moon,”
“... my sun,”
“...to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.”
“...Forever.” Rapunzel added, smiling.
“Forever.” Cassandra repeated, also smiling.
Rapunzel giggled. “You may now kiss the bride.” She teased. Cassandra rolled her eyes but she did just that. As their lips met, something wonderful happened. They both felt it. Cassandra’s blue hair glowed brightly as the power of the moonstone circled them both. Rapunzel glowed a beautiful gold and they could both feel the aura, the souls, of the stones bound them together. It was an amazing feeling, beautiful, as the world around them faded into nothing but an explosion of blue and gold combining as one. And that was the first time either of them finally understood what the sunstone and moonstone were trying to lead them to do so long ago. They finally understood the mission that was given to Rapunzel, why the moonstone called her all those years ago. Only now, it wasn’t just Rapunzel’s mission.
The mission was to unite the two stones together as one.
The stones weren’t just stones anymore. They had holders; owners. And when Rapunzel was given that mission, it was to reunite them. But it wasn’t the stones that needed to be reunited. That wasn’t why the moonstone called to her.
Neither of them could have ever guessed that it was them that needed to be unified as one.
