Chapter 14

Overview
Nobunaga's Conquests 1560-1581

Nobunaga had already conquered most of Japan in less than twenty years. All that remained was the far west and the Uesugi and the Takeda that were attacking his reign in the east. Nobunaga had sent Hideyoshi and Katsuie to fend off the Uesugi but it was not looking too good.

“Katsuie! We can't handle this! We have to send for Lord Nobunaga. Only he can get this under control!”

Hideyoshi was fighting bravely. He could barely hold off the Uesugi soldiers. Katsuie had made the idea to rush in blindly. And Hideyoshi was the idiot who'd let him do it. Man, they were in trouble. They had to send a scout to Lord Nobunaga and fast.

“You are right Hideyoshi. We must send for help!”

Throne Room

“Lord Nobunaga! Lord Nobunaga,” a scout sprints into the throne room. He runs past most of Nobunaga's retainers that were sitting off to both sides of Nobunaga, as if leading the way to him. Nobunaga himself sat on a floor pillow with a bored look. Next to him on a small floor pillow was Nohime who sat on her knees.

Everyone looked to the door at the scout who ran toward Nobunaga. When he was in front of him he dropped to his knees, “Lord Nobunaga, Lord Hideyoshi and Master Katsuie are being pushed back off the Eastern Front. They desperately request reinforcements.”

Nobunaga stood, “My loyal retainers... prepare for battle with Uesugi. We leave now,” Nobunaga turned to Nohime, “Noh... I request your help with this battle as well.”

Nobunaga had began calling Nohime her nickname of Noh, a name she only allowed him to call her because she couldn't order him not to. Nohime stood and bowed, “Yes my Lord.”

Nobunaga kissed her cheek and left to prepare himself. Mitsuhide and Nohime walked out of the throne room together and soon parted ways without a word to their chambers to get their weapons.

When the rest of the Oda troops arrived with Nobunaga they saw the battle unfolding. It was storming and pouring rain, hardly any visibility. What they did see was that all of the troops with Hideyoshi and Katsuie had been pushed far apart. Every officer and his troops were isolated. They had to move quickly. Nobunaga led the troops to the Main Camp that Hideyoshi had set up.

Nobunaga sent the call around to the soldiers on the battlefield, “All units, quickly! Fall back! Once we regroup our forces we will attack the Uesugi Main Camp.”

As Nobunaga gave the order, Lord Kenshin, leader of the Uesugi, declared, “In defense of honor I will slay Nobunaga.” Kenshin had refused to let Nobunaga rule. Nobunaga was not a man of honor, but he was. He shouted to his troops, “Eliminate the isolated enemies first. Then strike the Main Camp!”

Mitsuhide led his troops down to Funaoka Castle. // This battle is a fight for supremacy between the Oda and Uesugi. If we do not finish them off here it will surely come back to haunt us. But... is it truly worth all the damage it will cause? //

As if sensing Mitsuhide's thoughts Nobunaga turned to him before he left the Main Camp, “Mitsuhide! I have not come this far by bowing down to the whims of conscious. If that disturbs you, then perhaps you should stand among those who oppose me as well. Then maybe perhaps will get something that you are desiring right now. Even-as-we-speak. ”

Mitsuhide's eyes widened, he looked down then shouted to his troops, “To Funaoka Castle!”

Nohime rode out of the Main Camp on a black horse. She had decided on her own to rescue the isolated officers before the Uesugi could get to them. She went in the opposite direction of Mitsuhide. She would rescue Hideyoshi first. Then the other officers. Hideyoshi was the most important officer in danger.

When she arrived at his position he was overjoyed, “Ffeww I didn't think I was gonna make it out of that one!”

“Hideyoshi, fall back to the Main Camp!”

Hideyoshi looked to Katsuie's position, “Katsuie got himself in trouble, but I'll rescue him!”

“Hideyoshi fall back!”
“Alright, alright! I'm going,” he looked back over to Katsuie's position, “That numbskull... to brave for his own good I say...”

Nohime finished off the officer attacking Hideyoshi, then she rescued two officers she didn't know, then she made her way to Katsuie.

“I thank you for this aid my Lady, I shall pull back now.”

Katsuie made his way up to the Main Camp and when he faced Nobunaga he bowed low on the ground, “This never should have happened... My Lord I offer my apologies.”

Mitsuhide had arrived at the front lines at Funaoka Castle. He addressed Lord Kenshin from the battlefield, “Master Kenshin... why do you oppose Lord Nobunaga? Luring innocents into war is beneath an honorable man like yourself.”

“It is not I but honor itself that lures them. That drives them to resist the Demon King.”

Mitsuhide stood amongst his soldiers thinking while he was guarding the Castle. // There will surely be hostility toward the path that Lord Nobunaga is taking. It would seem that such hardship is part of his fate. //
// I just don't know... What should I do? Perhaps what I seek is not a land ruled by Lord Nobunaga after all...”

ﻬ

The Oda Army suddenly faltered on the state of confusion. Mitsuhide had left the Front Lines of Funaoka Castle!

ﻬ

In the middle of the battlefield stood Nohime. She had rescued all the isolated officers. Then she had gotten word that Mitsuhide had left the battle. // Poor Mitsuhide, he's so confused. He doesn't know what to do... //
Nobunaga was defending the Oda Main Camp, he realized that Mitsuhide had left the battle, but that wasn't important. Mitsuhide could do what he wished for now.

He declared to the Uesugi, “If you resist the world as ruled by Nobunaga then there is no place for you in it! Give in now or prepare to meet death!”

Suddenly, an Uesugi officer, Kanetsugu Naoe, appeared near Funaoka Castle. Nohime saw this and rushed to apprehend him.

As she approached him he addressed her, “Those who do not love honor must be stricken from this land!”

Nohime replied, “I'm sorry, but my love is devoted to a man,” she looked down a little, “One man in particular...”

Nohime engaged him in battle. He wielded a sword and magic charms that would fly out at his command. He was a good warrior and was a good match for her. But Nohime still came out the victor. He walked away from her injured, “You may have defeated me, but you will never defeat my honor!”

Nohime watched him stagger off to his horse and ride away. Lightning flashed and she could see the Uesugi Main Camp. She jumped on her horse and headed for the Main Camp where she knew Kenshin would be waiting. If she took care of him the battle would end.
***
The battle had ended in favor of the Oda. Nohime had taken down Kenshin, who called himself the `God of War', quite easily. Kenshin was a old man. Nohime had no problem taking him down. Nobunaga now, thanks to Nohime, had almost taken control of Eastern Japan. All that was left was Nobunaga's next target; the enemy of the late Kenshin, Shingen Takeda, the Tiger of Kai.

“Kenshin has been killed by Nobunaga you say?”

“Yes Lord Shingen. Well… by his wife,” replied Yukimura Sanada, Shigen's student.

“Kenshin was taken down by a woman??”

“Yes my Lord, but she is a skilled warrior. She rescued all the officers that Lord Kenshin had isolated and kept every officer alive. And defeated every officer on the battlefield that day.”

“Hmm I see. Well then she is a worthy adversary. Wonderful. She makes a fine match for Nobunaga, perhaps we could have them over tea and we could try to stab each other.”

“My Lord…”

“However, at any cost, they must be stopped. We cannot allow Japan to fall into the hands of the Demon King.”

Shingen paced the floor, coughing every few minutes, “We will attack them and give them a taste of the Takeda Calvary.”

“A wonderful idea Lord Shingen! The Takeda Calvary couldn't possibly be beaten!”

The Takeda Calvary was the best in all of Japan. No one could get past them. And this made the Takeda forces a strong opponent. They were fast, strong, and powerful. Unstoppable... maybe.
