Chapter 15
Two Days Later, Owari

A soldier rushes in, “Lord Nobunaga!”

Nobunaga looks up from his place on the floor. His dull stare almost frightening. The soldier bowed on the floor, “Lord Shingen in the east has died of illness.”

“What?”

“I just received the report my Lord. He has been battling illness for the past month. He became worse during this past week. He past away two days ago.”

“I see... then we should have no problem destroying the Takeda forces then.”

“My Lord... Katsuyori, son of Lord Shingen, is prepared to battle you. He fled from Takeda territory after his father was laid to rest. He has joined forces with the Sanada and what little remains of the Uesugi.”

“Hmm I see. He has learned something from Shingen. However... he still not the strategist his father was. Masayuki Sanada however, will prove a worthy opponent.”

Nobunaga turned to look at the soldier still bowing on the floor, “Spread the news that Lord Shingen has died and our new target is Katsuyori and the Sanada.”

“Yes my Lord!”

Nohime stood on Mitsuhide's balcony waiting for him to return. She supposed he already knew of Nobunaga's plan to attack the combined forces of the Takeda, Uesugi, and the Sanada. It would be an intense battle. Masayuki was indeed a great strategist. For all they knew Masayuki could have hidden rooms beneath his palace that tunnel all over the battlefield.

Lord Kenshin and Shingen had been enemies when they died. Two amazing strategists gone. While they were enemies they did have many of the same qualities. They were amazing strategists, they wanted Japan to be ruled by someone worthy. They respected each other. But most of all, they both hated Nobunaga. They had planned to combine their forces to defeat him, but they had both died before they could organize it.

Strangely, Nohime had been quite pleased that they hadn't been able to plan it. But not because this meant Nobunaga would be safe for another night. She was happy because facing them together could mean danger for Mitsuhide. She didn't believe that a battle like that would get him killed, but it could get him badly injured. And that was something she would not allow.

The door opened and showed Mitsuhide. He looked at her in surprise, “Nohime... wha... what are you doing here?”

“I wanted to know if you were planning on going to the next battle in the east with Nobunaga.”

“No I am not. I am not ready for another battle yet. I told Lord Nobunaga this as well.”

“Mitsuhide... are you alright? You seem angry.”

“I am angry. At myself. I fled from battle. A battle that Lord Nobunaga needed me for.”

“It is okay Mitsuhide. If he didn't understand you wouldn't be alive.”

“You are right Nohime. But I am not ready to go into battle just yet.”

“That's fine. I am not going either. I've had enough battle for once in my life. Those officers were so weak... it was over so soon.”

Mitsuhide laughed, “Well I would imagine they were shocked to see a woman on the battlefield. And not just any woman, Lord Nobunaga's wife. And most of your kimonos... well they... umm...”

Nohime laughed, a seducing laugh, “I'm sure they were quite distracted. Many a man is. I am without a doubt the most beautiful woman in all of Japan. Wouldn't you agree?”

“Of course I would my Lady.”

“Well that's good. I have been hearing that Oichi is more beautiful than me. And she is not.”
“Well men do have different tastes. Lady Oichi is beautiful but not as beautiful as you Nohime.”

“Finally someone agrees with me.”

“But again... Lady Oichi is not my type. I do like a woman to have a mind of her own. Lady Oichi does not. If she did she would have stayed with Lord Nagamasa and he might still be alive.”

“And Nobunaga would be dead. And you and I...”

“Would have been free to be together.”

Nohime turned sad eyes up to his own. Mitsuhide took her hands in his and kissed them both, “If only you weren't a princess.”

“Then I would have been free to marry whomever I wished. Even though my father promised me that anyway. He betrayed me as well...”

“I will never betray you Nohime. I promise.”

“The only way you could ever betray me is to deny my love.”

“And that is something that will never do. I will always accept your love... even if I cannot embrace it publicly.”

Overview
Nobunaga's Conquests 1560-1581

Nobunaga had succeeded in defeating the combined forces of the Uesugi, Takeda, and the Sanada. The battle took place in Ueda, the home of Masayuki Sanada and his son Yukimura Sanada, known as Japan's Greatest Warrior. Said warrior hadn't been great enough to defeat the Oda and Tokugawa forces. And they were succeeding.

The New Year was only a few weeks away. The battles on the Eastern Front had taken more time that expected. While they were quick battles, they had been rough. But the Oda soldiers always pulled through. As soon as the Oda had won this last battle, Nobunaga had begun making preparations for his next series of campaigns on the Western Front...
