Chapter two

I woke up Monday morning, thinking it would be like every other day. I would get to pay at least one visit to the office. I would hear about what happened at the party after I left. I'd hear about who slept with whom and what everyone had done when they got drunk or high. That’s what most days where like for me.
I looked at myself in the mirror. My hair was getting long. It had grown from being just above my eyebrows to far below my grey eyes in only a week and a half. I hated how quickly my hair could grow. I could barely see beyond the medium blonde barrier that was my hair.
Ever since that Thursday, when I first met I became extremely concerned about he felt about my image and me alone. This had caused me a lot of stress and I decided I needed a cigarette.
I walked outside and pulled out one of the long, narrow cylinders and lit the end. I took a long drag on it just as I looked over at the old neighbors’ house. I knew they had moved, but the sign that sat just beside the mailbox last week had gone missing. I don’t know when. I had just noticed it. It wasn’t a very nice house, and it really didn’t fit in it with the neighborhood of large newly-constructed homes. It reminded me more of an old shack. I couldn't imagine living there. Our house was the nicest on the street and how the two homes where put so close to each other I did not know. .I pondered on who could be living there.
I heard a noise coming from behind an ancient car which had been parked in the driveway. Whoever had moved there was having engine problems, something I had little experience with for a male teenager.
I walked over to the man beneath the car. All I could see was tight blue jeans on thin legs of a teenage boy. “Need help?”
pushed the skateboard in which he’d been laying on out from beneath the car. “Nah, forget it I just–Devin?”
“Hey neighbor!”
“You live over there?” he pointed to the larger building on the street which I called home.
“More or less.”
“Too many parties for family time?”
“That’s the plan! Spend all my time at Danny’s and hit on girls at his parties and I’ll never have to deal with parents.”
“You know, you really shouldn’t talk about your parents like that. At least they care about you.”
“And yours don’t?”
“Are you kidding, my parents are filthy rich. Do you really think this is their house? Nah, I live with my brother. He’s the only one who I can even relatively relate to. He was going to collage down here and he decided to take me with him to save me from the orphanage my parents wanted to send me to.”
My attention then focused on a pebble sitting loosely on the paving. “I’m sorry, dude. I mean, I didn’t know.”
“I know, it’s cool.”
“So, what’s up with the car?”
“My brakes are shot. I guess I should have fixed it last night, but I always procrastinate. Pathetic, I know.”
“No, not really.” I forced my eyes to his. “So, then, I guess you need a ride?”
“What? Oh, well, uh… you know, you don’t have to. I can walk. Or maybe I’ll just stay home.”
“No way! You’re my friend and we have to get the guys used to seeing you. Besides, Eric’s annoying the shit out of me and I need someone to escape to.”
“Alright, fine. If you want to escape at lunch as well we’ll be even, deal?”
“Deal.”
“So, your brother, what’s he like?”
“He’s okay. I mean, he’s the closest thing I’ve had to a parent since I told them I was–anyways, he’s the closest person to me. However, we are brothers, and we do fight every so often.”
“I think I get it.”
“Somehow I doubt that, but thanks for the support anyways.”
“Sure, I guess. When did you move in?”
“Over the weekend. I was supposed to start Wednesday, but there was some problem with the paperwork or something. I don’t know. But, regardless, I couldn’t start until Friday, when we met.”
He smiled and I returned the gesture. By this time I had been pulling into the school parking lot.
The car in front of me had come to a sudden stop. “Look out!” he took the wheel from me and swerved to the side of the car. He then turned back with another smile upon his lips. “Maybe you should watch the road. And I guess from now on I’ll have to watch you.” He winked.
“That’s freaky, dude!”
“Chill. It’s just a fag joke, you know.”
“Why do you let people push you around like that? And why do you joke about it? I mean why let people say you’re something your not?”
“People have the right to say what they want. And to be honest I don’t give two shits what people think of ” he whispered something to himself. It sounded like besides, they aren’t far off.
“Huh?”
“Nothing. Um, we’re kind of just sitting here and I think the first bell just rang. It might be a good idea to get out now.
“Huh? Oh, right class.”
“That’s why we went to school isn’t it? To torture our brains and cram them full of useless information so when we go to collage we have no room left for the info we’ll actually need. Isn’t high school great?” he grinned.
I remained serious and mildly confused. “If you want to go to hell, sure. I mean, that’s what this place is.” I stared at the brick building. “It’s where they send us when they fear our adolescent minds will fade and we’ll end up committing some stupid crime or something. Sometimes I wish I could be home schooled. Just leave all these people behind and–“
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! As much as I’d hate to interrupt your deep little speech, it was kind of sarcasm, dude. Besides, you’re popular. Why would you want to leave that?”
“It’s a lot to live up to sometimes. It seems so glamorous, but if you where in our group, if the guys would accept you, you would be able to understand. I feel like I can’t trust anyone. I mean, Danny is my best friend, but there are a lot of things I don’t have the guts to tell event him. It sucks.”
“So quit.”
“What?”
“Quit.”
“I could never do that.”
“Why?”
“Danny. Like I said, there’s a lot about me he doesn’t know, but what I have told him he’s kept from Eric since I told him. I remember one time, in eighth grade, we had to do this project for this one book and neither me nor Danny read the book, but Eric actually did. I think that was the only time he ever did his homework. Anyway, he had this prized possession, some stupid watch his ex-girlfriend gave him. He still liked her. But, he put it on the table and I decided to see what would happen if I took it from him.” I chuckled “Danny and I sat there normally, waiting for him to notice. It didn’t take long before he was questioning, no, demand answers from Danny and me. We worked hard to keep straight faces as he slammed kids against the walls until our teacher dragged him out of the room. We hid it in the. He thought he just left it there. He got suspended for two weeks for thrashing the room and threatening students. Danny never told him it was m, and I don’t have the guts since he still keeps it close. I know how freaked he was, but it truly showed me what kind of friend Danny could be to me.”
“Wow.”
“Was that sarcasm?”
“No! Well, maybe a little.”
We sat there and laughed together for about a minute. cabinet where we left our textbooks
“I really like how this is going.”
“What do you mean?”
“I never really had any friends at my old school… not after they found out I was–anyway, I guess I want to say thanks for, um, excepting me.”
“Why do you have to be so confusing and… mysterious?”
He laughed at me. “I guess when you have my life it’s how you have to be. In order to fit in…”
“What do you--”
Ring. Ring. Ring.
“Oh, shit! We should go. We’re officially late to class.”
“Didn’t I already tell you to get your ass out of the car?”
I looked down at the wheel, “sorry.”
He laughed, “Just get out Damn it.”
I walked into Mrs. Kell’s class ten minutes late with trailing behind me. “Mr. Classo, Mr. Frederik, so nice of you to join us. Ten minutes, Devin. That’s a detention.”
“Sorry Mrs. Kell. We where having car problems. You understand, don’t you?” asked, and I looked at him in shock
“Of course, Mr. Frederik. Forgive me. Have a seat boys.”
came over and sat beside me, his new seat. “No, no, no! There is no way. No faggots!”
“But he’s not a--”
“It’s cool. I’ll just move to the back.”
“Um, ok I guess.” But the demonic glares where still coming from Eric and Danny, who had walked over and sat in ’s seat. “What the fuck are you guys staring at?”
Danny looked down at the floor, “you heard Eric. You can’t sit here, dev. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize to him! He doesn’t deserve it!”
“What the hell are you guys talking about?”
Kaity looked up at me. “I’m so sorry, Devin.”
“What the--” then it sunk in. “you bitch! I trusted you.”
“I was telling Sam, and he IMed me when I was telling her. It was an accident.”
“Fuck that!”
“Look, dev, the point is that you’re a fag and we don’t want you near us. Clear?”
“You know what? . Who the hell would want to sit with you guys? You’re jackasses. And Kait? I really hope you enjoy your time over here without me to protect you.”
I walked to the back of the room where was seated. “What was that all about?”
“They just heard something they didn’t want to hear.” This made him chuckle. “What?”
“And you accused me of being mysterious. Come on, you can tell me. I’m trustable.”
“I really wish I could, but I think it would just make matters worse.”
“Why don’t you talk to your parents?”
“They wouldn’t be very pleased to hear I–they just wouldn’t like it, okay?”
“Okay, that’s cool. I mean, I guess I’m keeping things from everyone here too. No big deal, right?”
I looked out the window so he couldn’t see my face. “Yea. No big deal.”
I felt like he was so trustable, so why wasn’t I telling him what really happened. Why couldn’t I just say it: I’m gay? It’s not hard. Just two little words. No big deal, right.
“Um, …”
“Yea?”
“I wanted to tell you that I… I mean, just, thanks for being there for me, I guess.” I chickened out. It was officially a coward.
“Uh, sure, I guess. Yea! It’s cool.”
Lunch had been just as bad. I sat with Adrien, but we didn’t talk much at first. He was real quiet, like he was worried about something, but he wouldn’t say anything to me. I started to wonder if he had heard what Eric had said. Would he leave me too? I didn’t mind loosing Eric, but loosing Adrien would be too much to bear. I don’t know why I felt so strongly about this boy. I didn’t even know him. But I did. For some reason, fate had brought him to me and I fell, hard and fast, for him. It has destroyed the reputation I had built up for so many years, but I couldn’t just deny my emotions, could i.
“Hey, Adrien, what’s wrong?”
“What? Oh uh… nothing.”
“Ok.”
“Hey, Dev?”
“Yea?”
“Do you believe love is real? That there’s someone out there for everyone, and if we just follow the path that life has set for us, that we will eventually find them?”
“Uh…. Wow. Don’t make fun of me anymore!”
He chuckled. “Just answer the question.”
“I didn’t….”
“Oh.”
“…but, I’m not so sure anymore. I mean, you never really know. You can believe or disbelieve in it, but you can’t know what to believe. I think I do now, though.”
“Really?”
“Really.” I looked down. If he only knew… “I’m gonna go get food, ok? I’ll see you in a bit.”
I grabbed a piece of pizza and a coke and headed for the lunch line. As I was entering my ID number, Danny threw himself into me, nearly launching my meal into the air.
“Hey! Watch it, jackass!”
I looked back at my tray before finishing the half-typed code. A note lay beside my pizza in a sloppily folded paper football.
“Hey, you’re holding up the line!”
“Oh sorry.”

I fidgeted with the note quietly for about five minutes, not realizing it was in Adrien’s vision.
“Oh… what’s that?”
“Nothing, just a note.”
“From who?”
“You’re a bit nosey today aren’t you?”
“I’m just curious. You don’t have to tell me. Although I may die a little inside if you don’t.”
“That’s such bull shit! I swear, you get more like Danny every second.”
“So it’s from Danny?”
“I never said that.”
“I know, but I will take your defensive tone as a confirmation.”
“Damn! I’m so readable.”
“Yep. Lucky me I am also very good at reading people, though its completely unnecessary when I’m near you. You give yourself away.”
“Fuck you!”
“So what’s it say?”
“You say that like I’ll actually tell you. So very Danny of you.”
“I’m not really like Danny, am I?”
“More than you know.”
He tried giving me a devilish glared, but his seriousness was burned away with laughter.
“Ok come on, dude. you have to tell me. We’re friends, right?”
“Uh huh. And friends stay out of others friend’s business. Nice try, but it doesn’t work on me.”
“Aw man. Fine, what would work?”
“Nothing. There’s no way your reading it.”
I opened it up beneath the table, out of his radar. “aw, no fair! Come on. Its Danny. What secrets does e have to hide? Tell me, please!”
“It just says ‘meet at my house”
“What?! Oh, dude! how lame. I was hoping I was something juicy.”
“Like you said, Danny doesn’t have much to hide.”
“Wait, why did he have to give you a letter for that shit?”
“Ah, Eric and I are having a fight and I guess he doesn’t want Eric to know we’re still on speaking terms.”
“Popular people. They have to add so much unnecessary drama to every already-stressful day. No offense, but you popular folk are so pathetic.”
“Folk? Where you get off calling us pathetic?”
“Touché.”
“Ha that’s one for me!”
“Shall we count my points?”
“Uh, I have a better idea. Let’s restart yours at, say, negative ten.”
“Oh, no. You’re just mad because I’m beating you by twenty-five. Oh look! It’s twenty-six now.”
“I don’t remember you getting that many in.”
“You don’t? your loss, twenty-seven.”
“Damn…. I should just shut up, huh?”
“Yep, twenty- eight. Sucks for you.”
“Hey, stop that!”
“Then stop setting your self up!”
“I don’t like this game.”
“That’s because you’re loosing.”
“So…”
He chuckled. “Some team player. Please, tell me you aren’t on any teams. You may shoot up the place if you loose.”
“Actually, I am. I wrestle.”
“Ha! And your friends call me queer. Nothing says gay like squeezing into spandex and rolling around on a mat with some skinny little sweaty kid.”
“You have a comeback for everything, don’t you?”
“Yep, and they just keep coming. My suggestion: give up. You just can’t beat me. I’m the king of comebacks! Don’t mess with the man or he’ll fuck you up!”
“Son of a bitch.”
“And proud of it too!”I couldn’t hold in my laughter anymore. I chuckled loudly. “cocky much.”
“Oh, I’m very cocky.” He grinned.
“Is that right?” the bell rang.
“Fuck, that was quick.”
“You are so screwed up.”
“You’ll get used to it. Come on, dude. We still have classes to go to. Shit, I forgot where I go next.”
“English, dude. it was your first class here. Duh”
“Ha. Right.” He tapped his finger on his head. “Bad memory. My bad.”
I got home late that night. Adrien and I hit the mall after school, and I lost track of time. As usual, my parents where furious.
“Devin Classo! Where in hell have you been?”
“I was at the mall. Chill out.”
“Don’t tell me to ‘chill out’ young man. You know you’re supposed to be home by eight on weekdays. It’s nearly eleven. You just barely made curfew!” I always know I’m screwed when she tries to talk cool.
“I got caught up.”
“Oh so you where with that Kait girl, then.” There was no question in her tone.
“No, mom. I was with my friend. You know, our new neighbors. My friend adrien lives over there now.
“Fine, but you better make it back by eight next time. And lose the damn attitude. It’s not like you, Devin.”
“Can I go now?”
“Watch your tongue”
“Whatever.”
“That night was a strange one. I’d never felt like crying so badly in my life, yet I couldn’t. Not now that I knew him. He was my savior. The only part of my life that brought me any joy. The only reason I hadn’t done what I had secretly desired all along. To end it all.
I had always been depressed, but I had kept it all inside. Every knife I saw, every blade nearby, tempted me. It was nearly unbearable. I just wanted it all to go away: the pain, the stress, the expectations. But now, when it felt like my whole world was falling apart, I didn’t. And it was because of him. For the first time, I had done something I had never done in the midst of the moonlight as I lay in my room. I smiled.
