Chapter Three: Fury Of Wildfire
By: Demon Priestess Saturn
Ryo was halfway down the mountainside when the smell of smoke filled his lungs. Ryo turned and looked back up at the beautifully green mountainside to see that the trees on top of the mountain had caught fire. Ryo stared for a moment letting the thought seep into his skull. His eyed widened in horror as he realized those two men were still on the mountain. Ryo began to run back up the mountain as fast as the steepness would allow. He weaved in and out of trees while keeping an eye out for anything suspicious. As he got closer to the top a burning sensation filled his nostrils; and his eyes began to itch and burn. Ryo tried to look ahead of him to see exactly where he was going. But he soon found out that his eyes were stinging so badly that he couldn't keep them open. He felt like his chest was on fire and his head felt dizzy. He quickly raised his arm to his face in an attempt to block the thick black smoke, which was now obscuring his vision, from entering his lungs. He coughed into his sleeve and closed his eyes. As he hiked farther up the mountain he heard branches falling all around him. He could hear the roar of the fire along with the sound of burning wood. He slowly opened his eyes and found he was in the center of the fire. He lowered his arm from his face and looked around in search for the two poachers.
That's when he heard it. It was faint but he could hear someone screaming from not far away. Ryo instinctively knew what he had to do and for some reason his body seemed to be ready for the danger ahead. He felt strangely excited, like the part of him that died had just been brought back to life. He hadn't felt this alive in two years and it almost made him reluctant to take action. He knew after this he would go back to feeling like a normal human being, and that was something he decided he didn't want. But there was no time for him to argue with himself, he had to save two people from dieing; even if they had just threatened his life moments before. Ryo listened closely and started to run in the direction of the screaming. He stopped a few times to make sure that he was going the right way, then when he was sure he was going the right way, he pushed on and hoped he would find them soon. Ryo stopped by in a small clearing where a set of large rock stood. He listened but he could no longer hear any voices.
“Dam it!” Ryo cursed and thought maybe something had happened to them.
“Hey kid!” Ryo turned to see the black haired man kneeling next to his brown haired friend. They were both under one of the large rocks that was overhanging another rock. The black haired man looked pretty shaken up not to mention his friend lay on the ground beside him.
“You guys alright.” Ryo asked and ran over to him.
“I'm alright but…” The black haired man trailed off and looked at his friend on the ground. Ryo also looked down at the man that pointed the gun at him. He looked severely burned and obviously needed medical attention. “I don't know what happened. I heard an explosion and I turned around to see Leon lying on the ground.”
“I don't care what happened.” Ryo said calmly. “Can you walk?”
“Yes.” The black haired man replied.
“Good.” Ryo said while he attempted to lift Leon off the ground. But under Leon's bulk Ryo's arm seared with pain. Ryo cringed and let out a slight gasp. Then he remembered he had broken his arm and wondered why he didn't feel it hurting while he was coming back up the mountain.
“You okay?” The black haired man asked.
“Fine. Hey what's your name?” Ryo looked into his green eyes.
“Kevin.” The black haired man replied.
“Do me a favor Kevin. Pick up your friend for me and I'll lead us all down the mountain to safety. Can you do that for me?” Ryo looked Kevin in the eyes. Kevin nodded in agreement and picked Leon up off the ground.
“Okay. That's task one done. Now to get us all down the mountain without running into the fire.” Ryo thought to himself as he looked around for a likely escape. Kevin stared at Ryo waiting for him to tell him what to do but he was starting to wonder if Ryo himself knew what he was doing. That's when Ryo knew what to do next he saw a path the fire had obviously not gotten to. Ryo looked back at Kevin and pointed down the path.
“That way. If we go that way we should hopefully have a clear path to the bottom. But you also have to realize if we get block we'll have to change our course, which means I am going to need to you be brave about this. Okay? Otherwise were all going to get killed.” Ryo said to Kevin.
“Okay.” Kevin replied in a shaky voice.
“Alright lets go. Just follow my lead.” Ryo said in a strong voice, which reminded him of the situation two years ago.
~Flashback~
All four of the ronins sat around the large table in Mia and Ryo's house.
“But what if someone falls off the cliff?” Rowen stared at Ryo sincerely.
“I've already got that covered.” Ryo replied.
The truth was that plan wasn't entirely backed up.
“Sage! Watch out!” Ryo yelled over his shoulder. Sage was near the edge of the cliff and Tina-Marie was heading right for him.
Sage was knocked off the cliff because Tina-Marie knew I hadn't planned for that…What if I screw up again? What if someone else ends up in a coma for three weeks because I screwed up? No… I can't think like this right now. I have to make sure I do this right this time.
~End Flashback~
“This way!” Ryo said as him and Kevin ran straight down the clearing. The fire roared around them and the tree branches fell. Ryo glanced around from side to side and ran down any clear path he could find. However it was not long before Ryo realized there were no more paths. He turned and looked back at Kevin. “We need to go back the way we came.”
“But it's too late.” Kevin yelled to Ryo over the noise. Ryo looked over Kevin's shoulder and realized he was right. They were completely surrounded by the fire.
…………………
“I'm home mom!” Cye said as he pushed open the wooden front door. Dropping his backpack to the floor he moved to the side and let Kento step into the large entrance room. It was a rather large house with a large staircase directly a crossed from the front door. The floors were decorated with cherry wood hardwood floors, which off set the white paint on the walls. On the right was a large living room that had large bay widows so you could easily look out at the ocean. On the farther end of the living room there was a siding glass door, which lead out to a large porch. Kento had just finished gapping at the living room when Cye headed off into the room on the left side of the house.
“Mom?!” Cye called. Kento turned his head and looked in the direction Cye was heading. Kento set his bag on the floor next to Cye's and followed his friend into the strange room. Kento's mouth dropped as he realized which room they had entered. This room was large but not as large as the living room. It had the cherry wood hardwood floors still and a small island with white cabinets in the center. On the right was a small oak kitchen table, which didn't match much with the rest of the color contrast.
“I guess nobodies here. Do you want something to eat?” Cye stopped looking for his mom and looked back at Kento.
“Yeah… Why didn't you tell me you had a big kitchen?” Kento gapped and the scenery around him.
“Because I knew you were going to see it.” Cye smiled and bent down to dig a pot out of a nearby cabinet.
“This is one nice house. I knew your mom had a pottery business but man.” Kento said as he sat down at the kitchen table.
“We bought this house along time ago when my dad was still alive.” Cye said as he walked over to the sink to fill the pot with water.
“Oh…” Kento said.
“My mom wouldn't be able to afford a house like this if she tired to buy it now.” Cye said calmly. “She can't work as much as she used to.”
“It's cause she'd sick right?” Kento looked at Cye's back.
“Yes it is.” Cye said absent-mindedly.
“Who might you be?” Said a voice from the other end of the kitchen. Cye and Kento both looked at the adjacent entrance door to the kitchen to see a young man with long black hair, which had been pulled back in a loose ponytail, standing in the doorway. He wore dark blue jeans with a black t-shirt and had a loop earring in his left ear lob. He looked from Kento to Cye with his midnight orbs and seemed to be a little puzzled about what they were doing in his fiancée's house.
“Can I help you?” Cye looked just as confused.
“I was about to ask you the same thing.” The man replied.
“Who is this guy?” Kento asked Cye.
“I don't know.” Cye said still looking at the man.
“What are you doing in my fiancée's house?” The man asked politely.
“Um… I live here…” Cye said sounding like the man was insane.
“You do? What about you?” The man looked at Kento.
“I'm visiting… For the week…” Kento replied.
“Oh then you must be Cye.” The man smiled at Cye.
“Yeah…” Cye seemed insulted.
“Oh!” The man smiled happily. He walked into the kitchen and over to Cye. He extended his hand before he continued. “I'm sorry I thought you were someone else. My name is Ryuusake Shizuka.”
“Ryuusake?” Cye looked confused but shook the man's hand.
“He's my fiancé.” A woman now stood in the doorway where Ryuusake once stood. She leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed. She looked a lot like Cye with her straight auburn hair and sea green eyes. But their was one major difference her hair wasn't as messy as Cye's. In fact her hair was very neat and fell around her pale face, which gave her kind of a snooty look. She wore a little pink t-shirt that had red roses on it with white jeans. She also wore little white sandals to match her jeans. She looked at Cye then looked over at Kento and sneered.
“Sayoko… This is your fiancé?” Cye asked.
“Yes Cye. Geez I told you three times that he was coming up for the weekend but you never listen to me do you?” Sayoko walked into the kitchen.
“I'm sorry.” Cye said calmly.
“So who is this guy?” Sayoko pointed at Kento. “You know you could have introduced me instead of being rude.”
“Sayoko this is Kento. Kento this is my sister Sayoko.” Cye replied calmly.
“Nice to meet you.” Kento smiled and extended his hand to her. Sayoko stared at Kento for a moment before taking his hand. Kento continued to smiled but noticed the disgusted look on Sayoko's face.
“So your Sayoko's younger brother. It is such an honor to meet you. Your mother speaks a lot about you.” Ryuusake continued to smile.
“Yeah the pleasure is mine.” Cye said not knowing what else to say.
“Me and Ryuusake were going to take dad's boat out for a spin.” Sayoko said while grabbing a soda from the fridge.
“What?” Cye glared at his sister. “That's dad's boat Sayoko. I don't think you should be taking it out there.”
“Oh give your mouth a rest Cye. I'll do what I feel like doing.” Sayoko brushed her brother off.
“But it's dad's boat.” Cye argued.
“Yes and do I constantly have to remind you I am thirty years old? You should respect me by not arguing with me Cye.” Sayoko glared.
“Yes and do constantly have to remind you that the ocean is dangerous place for all those lacking experience in it. If you go out their Sayoko you and Ryuusake are bound to get into trouble. Besides do you even know how to drive a boat? Not to mention if mom finds out she'll flip, and the last thing we need is for her to die of a heart attack because her only daughter was being stupid and got herself killed.” Cye countered.
“Your just jealous because you don't get to go.” Sayoko replied simply.
“I'm not jealous I am just looking out for you and our mom. Which is obviously more than your mind can comprehend at the moment. Besides I don't want to go out there and get myself killed like an idiot.” Cye snapped.
“I take it you hate the sea because it's dangerous?” Ryuusake said innocently. Cye shot a nasty glare at Ryuusake and then looked back at his sister.
“And your marrying this idiot!?” Cye yelled.
“Hey! Watch your mouth…” Sayoko yelled back but she didn't get to finish.
“So! Your telling me your going to give up all those dreams you talked about to marry this idiot who knows nothing about our family! Is there anyone you think about other than yourself Sayoko! Don't you think about me? And what about mom? Who's going to take care of the house and mom if you run off and get married?” Cye screamed in rage.
“Well that's easy you are.” Sayoko glared at Cye. The room fell silent as a cool breeze blew in from the open kitchen window. Sayoko glared with hatred at Cye while Cye stared back at her. Cye's eyes widened and Kento could see a painful twang enter his sea green eyes.
“You really are selfish…” Cye said in a hurtful tone while turning on his heel and running out of the kitchen.
“Little brat.” Sayoko snapped. “I'm sorry his acting like a child Ryuusake.”
“Oh it's alright.” Ryuusake said.
“Yeah well someone else was acting like a brat too.” Kento stood up. A glare had seeped into his blue eyes. He stared angrily at Sayoko.
“What's it to you?” Sayoko glared.
“Cye's my best friend and he was right, you are being a selfish little bitch. What about his college life? You want him to give up his life, to live this life you just threw at him? I'm sorry but your out of school you probably have a job but it's probably nearby. Your future is obvious, you want to start a family and have kids. Am I right? Now doesn't Cye have the right to choose his future to?” Kento stared at Sayoko for a long while before looking at Ryuusake. “And as for you. If you want to get to know Cye more maybe you should learn more about his family. Asking him if he hated the sea wasn't a good idea. If you knew better you would know that the entire Mouri family loves the sea. Maybe you should do some homework before you marry into this family. That way you wont have to come off as a bad brother. He already has a bad sister he doesn't need a bad brother-in-law too.”
“Hey!” Ryuusake glared at Kento.
“I think I'll go find Cye and try to calm him down.” Kento stood up and walked out of the kitchen.
………………….
“Rowen! Wait! I can't run anymore.” Mia said as she stopped running to catch her breath. Rowen stopped running and looked over his shoulder at her.
“If Ryo is at the top of the mountain. He could be in trouble and I am not about too…” Rowen stopped mid-sentence feeling a strange sensation throughout his body. “What's going on?”
“Rowen look!” Mia's eyes widened as she pointed her slender finger at his forehead.
“What is it Mia?” He said trying to ignore the feeling he was having and looked behind him.
“It your…” Mia stuttered. Rowen looked back at her.
“It's my what?” Rowen asked. “Look we don't have time for this.”
“It's your wisdom…” Mia still hadn't finished her sentence.
“My what?” Rowen was thoroughly confused. What did his wisdom have to do with anything?
“Kanji.” Mia spit out. Rowen's eyes widened.
“What… That feeling… It's the same feeling from before when the armors were reunited… But how? Our armors are gone. But my kanji is on my forehead…” Rowen raised his hand to his forehead. He felt it, he knew… His kanji was back…
………………….
“This is very bad.” Ryo said as his mind started to race. “What am I going to do? Were all going to die… If only I had my armor.” Ryo clenched his teeth together. “Why does this have to end like this? Rowen… Kento… Cye… Sage… What am I going to do? How can I save us? I don't want to die like this.” Ryo closed his eyes tight and tried to think but nothing was coming to him. Ryo fell to his knees letting his hands fall to the ground beside him. Then a strange surge of energy filled his body. It was a warming sensation, one he hadn't felt in a long time. Not knowing exactly what it was he couldn't help but think he had felt it before.
“I don't want to die like this!” Ryo shouted. The kanji of righteousness flared brightly on his forehead. Red light poured out of his kanji, surrounding him and stretched out into the blue smoke ridden sky. Ryo felt like he had gained a large amount of power in just a few minutes but at the same time he felt he thrown out all his energy at once. Ryo's mind started to drift away from reality. It's the smoke from the fire. There's too much of it in my lungs…I can't stay awake…Ryo was too tired to even open his eyes. Instead he felt himself hit the cold ground. Then he heard several voices, maybe Leon had woken up and him and Kevin were flipping out. But for some reason it didn't sound like either of them. Before Ryo could make out the noise all around him he had lost consciousness.
