Chapter One: Troubled Times
By: WingsofSakon
Ever since they'd been able to be together. Taka and Miaka spent most of it in each other's arms. Comforting and savoring every moment possible. Although as of late… Taka had been noticing Miaka had been acting differently. Her touch wasn't as attentive nor was it as passionate. Her presence also was somewhat different. Her after school activities was starting to take up a lot of their precious time together. He'd waited many times for her to come home with anticipation. Only to wake in the morning with her turned away from him. So, this time he was going to surprise her. He left early from home. Stopped by the flower shop on the corner and picked out a few for his love. Although when he got to the school. What he saw made his heart stop and emotions run numb. She was in the arms of Tasuki. They were so completely into their own world at the moment they didn't notice him standing next to the entrance. He figured… there's no sense in confronting them now. He was beginning to get too angry for rational conversations with them. Later would just be as good. For right now though… he had to get away from the source of his pain. He dropped the flowers and went on his way. He walked most of the evening away. Roaming the town trying to filter out his feelings. It was starting to get rather cold out and he didn't happen to have a warmer shirt on. So, he went into the next café. Hoping to warm up a little. He sat down in a both and started to think about the situation again.
' How could this happen? How could she? Was I not good enough? I did and do every thing for her! It's why I'm here. After every thing we've gone through together. And Tasuki! How could he?! I thought we were true friends. How could he keep this a secret from me? How dare he. How dare they! Although, I've always known them two had a certain thing for each other. Ever since I saw them together. Ever since he took her from me the first time. I know it wasn't his complete fault. That time it wasn't and Miaka didn't return the feelings. Now… I see I've lost you to him once again. This time both on your own free will!!'
Taka was interrupted by a burst of laughter from the corner both. A group of young men were out having a good time. They had to have been friends for some time. Considering the nature of teasing. In the mist of his anger he couldn't help but smile at the fun they were having. It made him happy to see such joy. It made him think of the six of his. When they needed support each of them were there for each of each other. He could see that was true in this case as well. That this happy group was as close if not closer than him and his friends were. That was except for now. The one friend he always ran to in a time of need. Was the one that he couldn't turn to this time.
' Now what should I do? My best friend has betrayed me. Has my reason for being here changed as well? I'm lost with out Miaka. How did this happen? How did I lose you? Who have you told other than me about this? Miaka… I said I'd always find you. I've said that I'll love you forever… that I'd always be there to protect you. We survived through so much! Our love survived so much! '
"Heavy thoughts?"
Taka looked up from his thoughts to see a smiling face resting on his folded hands. Emerald eyes watching him attentively.
"I don't feel like company." Taka said trying to be alone.
"You looked like you needed some? Besides… I didn't ask you that. Here… this is on me." The young man slid a cup next to Taka.
"No thank you."
"You must be rather new around here. Although, I wouldn't know I been home for a while."
"Will you please just leave me alone."
"Strange weather we've been having. I don't remember it being this cold for this time in season."
"What do you want?"
"How about a conversation?" He said with a small grin and wink.
"I'm not into that. I have a girlfriend." Taka noticed it must have struck a nerve in the young man.
"I never implied I wanted that. Just a conversation."
"I seen you with that other group. Go talk with them."
"I already did."
"Try again."
"I'm trying again." He smiled again.
"Let me be. Or don't you fit in with that group?"
"You're starting to remind me of one of my friends."
"Oh yeah… "
"He can have cold words to."
"I'm leaving."
"In this weather… ?" The young man pointed out it had started to drizzle.
"I don't need this right now." Taka said under his breath sitting back down.
"Just have a seat and conversation… it'll pass before you know it."
"Are you always this annoying?"
"… I guess… " He answered with a sigh. He took a drink from the cup he had earlier offered. Then started to get up to leave. The look on his face made him look broken. He felt bad for saying that to him.
"Wait. I'm sorry… have a seat."
The young man sat back down hesitantly with his cup and blue over shirt.
"What's your name?" Taka asked trying to make him feel more comfortable.
"Mouri Shin. What's yours?"
"My friends call me Taka. You know I didn't even notice you come over here."
"I know… that's why I asked what was on your mind."
"Oh… I really don't want to talk about that right now."
"That's fine… you just looked like you could use some company."
"You're right… I could. Why aren't you with them?"
"I'm always with them. Besides… I don't even think they noticed me leave."
"Problems?"
"Not really… it's just when you're gone for a long time. People tend to forget."
"How long were you gone?"
"A year and a half. My family back home needed some help." Shin noticed the mention of family made Taka uncomfortable. "Did I say some thing wrong?"
"No… " Taka lied. He missed his siblings and father so much.
"Shin." A rather stern voice said from aside their table. Taka looked up and seen a young blonde.
"Shin, we're leaving now."
"That's fine, Seiji. I think I'll stay a while longer."
"I'm not driving all the way back here tonight. The others are going out for the night."
Taka could see that was the friend that Shin was talking about earlier. The looks they exchanged weren't pleasant either.
"I'll walk home. Don't worry, I know my way."
"Are you sure?" Taka tried to intervene, but wished he hadn't when the blonde shot him a glare.
"Oh… how rude of me! Taka, this is my friend Seiji. Seiji, this is Taka."
"Nice to meet you." Seiji said not looking at him any more.
"Same to you."
"I'm sure… see you later." Shin said taking a drink. With his friend on his way with out a second look.
"Is he always like that?"
"Like what?"
"I dunno… serious."
"Most of the time… but it's just his way. He's really a good person."
"Why didn't you're other friends say goodbye?"
"They've been like that lately… I guess it's only right."
"What do you mean by that?"
"I've been away… when I left. We weren't really getting along. I don't think that they think my loyalties lay with them. You see we had a little fight about it. But, I can't just leave my family behind like that. When it comes down to it… I guess I have a hard time forgetting the past."
"What… they wanted you to chose between your family and them?"
"Kind of... it's more complicated than that. Hey it's stopped raining."
Taka seen Shin was trying to change the subject. So, he went a long with it.
"Thank goodness." Taka said looking out side.
"You're gonna leave now… aren't you?"
"I really should get going. Do you need money for a cab?"
"No… I'll walk. Nice meeting you, I hope things work out for you." He said getting up.
"Shin… thank you for trying again." Taka said with a smile.
Shin gave him a wink and left the café with a smile.
