A Thankful Heart

Chapter 1: A New Enemy

Battousai the manslayer is truly a man of legend. He was a murder, he killed in the Revolution. But one day for some unknown reason he took an oath to never kill again.

"Hmmm… what should I do today? I don't know that I don't. Maybe Miss Kaoru, Sano, or Yahiko have something planned," Kenshin said to himself as he walked around the dojo.

"Oh Kenshin, Kenshin where are you?" Kaoru called for him.

"Yes Miss Kaoru what is it that you need?" he answered.

"Can you help me? I'm going into town to buy some food."

"Yes certainly Miss Kaoru I will help you that I will."

"Thank you. Lets get Yahiko and go," she said.

"Alright, but where is he?" Kenshin asked.

"He is over by the river training."

"Oh I see he sure trains a lot doesn't he."

"Yes he does, he is a good student," Kaoru replied with a smile.

"Well let's get him and go."

"Ok," Kenshin replied as they got Yahiko and headed to the market.

"Wow I never realized how many people come and buy food here," Yahiko said.

"Why does it matter?" Kaoru asked.

"I dunno. It just seems like every time I come here there are different people here."

"Yes there are, I see new faces all the time that I do," Kenshin said.

"Alright first lets get the rice," Kaoru said.

"Sure," Kenshin and Yahiko replied together.

"Help someone please help me!"

"Hey what was that?" Kenshin asked looking at all the people.

"What? What's wrong Kenshin?" Kaoru asked.

"I heard a voice, someone yelling for help."

"Are you sure?" Yahiko asked.

"Yes I'm sure, I know I am, I'm sure I heard it that I did," Kenshin replied still looking around for the person crying for help.

"Help me someone please don't let him hurt me again!"

"See there it is again," Kenshin said still looking for the person.

"Yes I heard it this time," Yahiko said.

"It came from over there," Kenshin said pointing at a tall man.

"Help!" the voice cried again.

"What are you doing?!" Kaoru yelled at the man.

"Look," Kenshin said, "It's a little girl."

"Hey get away from me lady," the tall man yelled at Kaoru.

"What are you doing to that poor girl?" Kaoru asked in an angry voice.

"This is none of your business go away!" he yelled and hit Kaoru on the arm knocking her to the ground.

"Kaoru!"

"Miss Kaoru!" Yahiko and Kenshin said rushing to her side.

"Don't worry I'm fine," she said.

"Come on!" the man yelled at the girl, "Come on get up you weakling! You're my daughter, the daughter of a great warrior and you will be a great killer just like me now get up!"

"Hey stop! You can't do this to her!" Kenshin yelled and stood up in front of the girl.

"Why not she is my daughter and I can do want I want with her," the man replied angrily.

"But not this, you can't beat her like this I forbid it!" Kenshin yelled you could see the anger in his face, "No one should beat another like this especially his or her own child!"

"I can if I want, I am Zango the greatest warrior ever to walk this earth and I can do whatever I please!" Zango yelled.

"But can't beat a living thing," Kaoru said walking over to the girl, "Kenshin she very badly hurt she needs medical attention right away."

"Please don't let him hurt me," the girl said in a whisper all her strength was gone.

"Don't worry we won't," Kaoru said but the girl didn't hear her she had passed out from blood lose caused by her wounds.

"You need to take her to a doctor now," Kenshin said to Zango.

"No I don't, I don't have to do anything you say I'm not taking her anywhere she can die for all I care she's just a waste all she does is cry and beg for me to stop that's all she does."

"She begs because of how you treat her!" Yahiko yelled.

"Really you think so tough guy well how about I try it on you and see if that's true, I want to see if you beg as a result of my training," Zango said and walked up to Yahiko about it hit him.

"You will not lay a hand on him that you will not," Kenshin said and walked up to Zango, "And if you continue to refuse to take that girl to the doctor then I will do it myself."

"You can't take her," Zango said, "If you do I will tell the authorities."

"No you will not," Kenshin replied.

"What? Yes I will, how do know I wont," Zango asked his voice becoming angrier with every word.

"I know that you will not because you would also be arrested for beating a child," Kenshin said, "So hand her over I will care for her myself."

"Not without a fight you won't," Zango said pulling out his sword.

"Well if you want to taste the ground feel free to attack me," Kenshin said drawing his reverse blade sword.

"Alright then here I come!" Zango yelled and charged at Kenshin.

"Before you start I must tell you I wont hold back," Kenshin said.

"I don't care if you hold back or not you'll still lose," Zango yelled getting ready to do an attack, "I'm gonna kill you, you red headed freak that this!"

"I don't think so that I don't," Kenshin replied.

"Alright you little punk here I come," Zango yelled.

"If that is the way you want it I will not argue with you I have more important matters to deal with that I do," Kenshin said jumping in the air to avoid Zango's attack, "I will end this now!" Kenshin said as he was directly above Zango's body, "Hiten Mitsugi style Ryu Stui Sen!" he yelled and came down on Zango, his sword crushing his shoulder.

"What you little, how could you? Wait that scar, a cross-shaped scar on his left cheek? What? Hey you… your Battousai the manslayer!" Zango said his voice full of fear.

"Well I see you have heard of me that you have, well I'll be glad to tell you I am no longer a manslayer I am only a wander trying to help people," Kenshin said coming fast at Zango turning his sword so that the handle was facing him so when he attacked he didn't kill him.

"Ahhhh!" Zango yelled, "You stupid little brat," he said and fell to the ground.

"You did it Kenshin you won," Kaoru said looking at Kenshin with a smile.

"Wow that was pretty cool Kenshin using the handle of your reverse blade sword to hit him in the gut and knock him unconscious," Yahiko said looking at Zango.

"Yes but now we must help the girl," Kenshin said as he bent down over Kaoru and the bloody shaking child and picked her up so she was lying in his arms.

"Let's go," Yahiko said.

"Yahiko, Miss Kaoru please go find Miss Megumi. I will take her to the dojo."

"Right."

"Ok," Yahiko and Kaoru said and began running through the village searching for Megumi.

"Come on let's go," Kenshin said in a soft and gentle voice to the little girl sleeping in his arms, "You are a strong girl that you are."

"She has to be around here somewhere, come on Yahiko Kenshin is probably waiting back at the dojo by now," Kaoru said as they ran.

"Yeah I know I'm looking I just hope that girl can hold on long enough for Megumi to help her," Yahiko replied.

"Don't talk like that of course she'll live long enough to let Megumi help her don't talk nonsense Yahiko," Kaoru replied as they ran.
