(Flash Back)

Kenshin had been fighting the red clothed ninja. The ninja was quick and skilled. Kenshin blocked every attack, his arms stung with the strain. `I have to attack.' He braced for another attack, and his legs were kicked out from under him, landing on his hand he pushed himself back up. He knew the ninja would lunged the sword towards his heart, if only her could move... `NO!' He screamed in his head.

He saw Kaoru lunge at the man and stab the sword into his right shoulder. A moment later the ninja's sword pierced her left chest area. She smiled slightly and dropped her hands from the sword. She leaned back against Kenshin her head lolling to the right. Kenshin grabbed onto her shoulders to hold her. He slid down to his knees, as her legs wouldn't hold her anymore. She leaned her head to look at Kenshin, her eyelids drooping with each blink. She smiled again and her eyes closed.

Kenshin's eyes turned a gold color and he stood, as the ninja withdrew the sword from his shoulder. He tried to stalk away, but Kenshin brought the butt of his sword down on his head. Kenshin didn't even hear the body plop to the ground. He was more worried about Kaoru.

(End of Flash Back)

Kenshin ran swiftly to the doctor's office, coming to the door he slowed his pace and opened it, stopping in the waiting area. "Dr. Gensai?" Kenshin called.

"I'll be out in a minute," Dr. Gensai called from the back.

"Please...now..." Kenshin didn't know what to say, he had failed to protect her. "It's Kaoru..." He stopped as the female doctor ran by him with a bag in her hand.

She stopped at the steps. "Are you coming or are you going to stand there?" She glared at Kenshin.

He huffed and stared at her. "Why..."

"I can get there a lot quicker than Dr. Gensai, please we must hurry." Kenshin's eyes turned gold once more and he sped up behind her, picked her up and ran back to the Dojo. "Put me down." Megumi huffed as she was carried, a look from his eyes told her to shut up. She clamped her mouth shut.

They reached the Dojo gates, and Kenshin didn't slow down, he bounded over them coming to a halt only when they reached Kaoru's room. Kenshin set the doctor down, and opened the Shojo. Aoshi was sitting next to Kaoru, while Misao was pacing the room.

"My god you all have blood on you," Megumi stated. She got a harsh glare from Aoshi and Misao.

"Miss Kaoru." Kenshin stated, pushing her forward a little. She went to the body and knelt before her. She looked her over. She saw the wound and started cleaning it right away. "I need some hot water and some towels. I would like some more bandages as well." Megumi looked up at the staring eyes. "NOW!" Kenshin raced to get the water and towels, as Misao followed him out the door. He pointed to where the bandages were and she got them.

Megumi watched the slow unsteady breaths, `it will be a miracle if that wound didn't puncture anything vital,' she thought as the water and bandages were brought to her. "Okay I need you all to leave the room, I need peace and a lot of room to work, having you hover over the body or anything will distract me." Megumi glared at the redheaded young man.

Kenshin lowered his head and left without a word, while Misao started to help Aoshi up. "Leave!" Megumi ordered as she worked more on the wound.

"Well get stabbed in the leg and see how fast you can get up." Misao spat at her, as Aoshi was finally on his feet. Megumi glanced up with her eyes.

"He'll be fine, but you should stay off that."

"You told us to leave, and now you want him to move without using his leg at all." Misao grew angry yanking Aoshi's arm around her neck, causing him to put a little more weight than she was use to. She stumbled and then straightened.

"He can stay, he is silent, while you are obnoxious and loud." Megumi finished cleaning the wound and grabbed her bag. She stated stitching the wound shut.

"OBNOXIOUS!" Misao screamed. "Well if it were your friend wouldn't you want to know..." Misao stopped. "I'm not obnoxious." Misao lowered her head and let go of Aoshi's arm. She walked to the door and shut it behind her. Aoshi sat back down, with a little difficulty.

Kenshin sat on the roof of the Dojo, staring at the stars. He had been sitting there since the doctor left. She had come out and said the wound had not punctured anything vital, luckily. The wound itself was deep and would take weeks to heal properly. She had also said that Kaoru may never awaken.

`Why wouldn't she awake,' the thought kept coming to Kenshin's mind. Megumi had no answer for him. She stared at him sympathetically, bowed and left. Sanosuke walked her home, as he had come by in the afternoon. He saw the sullen faces and stayed silent, only asking what happened once Megumi came out of the room. They ate dinner, which Kenshin fixed. It was eaten in silence and then everyone left, or went to their rooms.

Her students were worried, as Kenshin had told them all she was unable to train them. He told them in might be awhile before she could train once again.

Misao and Aoshi still sharing the same room. Kenshin bowed his head, his sword standing straight up.

CRACK

Kenshin stood in a flash and surveyed the grounds; no new presence was around, that he could feel. Another crack was heard and he looked down, to see Misao throwing Kunai's at some wood. He sat back down and leaned his sword on his right shoulder.

`If Kaoru doesn't awake I wonder what will happen. I can't protect her anymore, even if she does awake. When she awakes I will have Saitou look after her.' Kenshin sighed and bowed his head. `I can't help her if I couldn't protect her from the ninja's, the only way to protect her is to let Battousai be released. If he is released, I could kill her.' Kenshin ran a hand through his hair. He took a deep breath and dozed off.

Misao had left the room and walked around the grounds, remembering that Kaoru had told her she could. She came to a large tree with some flowers around it and placed her hand on it, remembering earlier that morning. "Why Kaoru?" Misao slammed her fist against the tree, and bowed her head as tears fell. "Kenshin would have been alright, why?" She whispered as she sank to her knees and cried.

She had gotten up off the ground and found bits of wood that would be perfect to hone her skills. Searching through the woodpile she found a tenth one and set them up in different spots. She spun around and threw her Kunai at one. A Crack sounded and she waited a minute for the next one. She continued until she had hit the tenth one. Six had been hit the middle and three a little to the left. The last one had been on the very right edge. She sighed the practice hadn't helped. She kicked the dirt and sat down against the tree, she had hit earlier. She looked up at the stars and wished a silent wish.

She rose and went back to the room, her and Aoshi shared. She opened the Shojo and sucked in a breath.

Aoshi looked back at her. He was standing with his shirt off, his back to Misao.

`So many muscles,' Misao thought. Her feet walked her to stand behind Aoshi.

"Misao?" Aoshi had heard the door open, and her intake of breath. He had shrugged and turned to look at her. He took a breath as she ignored his stare. Still she hadn't answered him. He jumped as he felt her small fingers ever so lightly touch his back. He instinctively pulled away. Misao yanked her hand back.

"S.s.orry." Misao averted her eyes to the ground. Aoshi turned around limping slightly.

"Misao." Aoshi glanced at her then grabbed her hands. "Your hands are ice cold."

"Yeah I was trying to practice, so I could get my mind off things." Misao shrugged and tried to pull her hands away from Aoshi's.

Aoshi held her hands, "They need to be warmed up."

"Aoshi,' Misao looked into his eyes, and was shocked at what she saw. His eyes weren't icy. Aoshi smirked as he pulled Misao into his embraced.

"Your whole body is cold."

"Misao's eyes widened as she was in his embrace. She tried to pull free, "A...a...a.oshi?" She questioned as her face went red.

"Hmm,"

"Ummm," She couldn't think. `I was cold cause he's so warm.' Tears started to form in her eyes. `No I won't cry anymore.' Misao thought as she tried to keep them at bay.

Aoshi had pulled back to look at her face. He saw a tear and bent down and licked it away. He smiled as her eyes opened wider. He covered her mouth with his, before she could utter a sound. Her arms, which had been by her sides, went around his arms and she gripped his shoulders, and pulled him closer. Aoshi pulled back for breath and stared into her eyes. He smiled genuinely and bent down to kiss her once more.

"Misao?" Aoshi slowly shook her awake. Misao shot forward and gasped. Tears billowed from her eyes. "Why was I dreaming that, when Kaoru got hurt?" Misao thought aloud.

"Dreaming what?" Aoshi stood, bracing himself on a piece of wood.

Misao blushed and stood, holding onto the tree for support. "Never mind." Misao shook her head and looked at Aoshi. His leg had been bound, and he stood straight, leaning on the piece of wood. "I came out here to get you, before you got to cold." Aoshi stated as he started limping back to their room.

Misao grew angry, "I don't want to go in yet."

Aoshi stopped and turned to look at her. "Your already cold."

"I don't care," Misao glared at him then sat under the tree once again. `Why can't he be like in my dream?' Misao smiled as she looked up at the stars. She growled as a tall figure blocked her view.

"Misao." Aoshi stood towering above her.

"What?" Misao leaned her head back on the tree.

"..."

"Well if your not going to say anything, then move so I can see the stars please." Misao said as she closed her eyes.

Aoshi sighed and bent down, grabbing her cold wrist. He gently pulled on her wrist and pulled her to her feet. Misao glared daggers at him.

She went to sit back down, until Aoshi pulled her in and kissed her. Misao's eyes widened. She responded to the kiss and grabbed the front of his shirt. Aoshi pulled back and breathed, as did Misao. They slowly walked to their room.

Kenshin had woken up to the two talking. He watched as Aoshi, got angry when she defied him. He turned his eyes away as Aoshi pulled her close. `He may be cold, but....' Kenshin didn't finish his thought as he heard a noise. He crept down the roof and went to Kaoru's room. He opened the shojo, she was still not moving on her futon. Her breathing was slow and steady. Kenshin heard the noise again and crept into the shadows of the room.

He watched as the shojo was slid open slowly and noiselessly. He readied for an attack and stopped as he saw it was Misao. Misao sat down next to Kaoru and took her hand.

"Hey, Kaoru, you better get well soon. I need someone to help me practice, and you have students you need to teach." Misao sighed as she closed her eyes. Kenshin could see tears streaming down her face. He also saw her hand move inside of her uniform.

Misao's eyes opened and held malice. Kenshin sprinted forward, but was too late. As soon as Misao had opened her eyes she pulled out a dagger. She raised it, and with lightning speed brought it down and impaled in into Kaoru's heart. Kenshin stopped dead as he saw blood come from the wound. He dropped his sword and fell to his knees. He scooted over to Kaoru's body and hugged her close.

Misao had stood, and was now behind him. She raised the dagger and slammed it into his back. Kenshin's eyes widened and he swiftly fell back as Kaoru's hands were on his neck.

"Did you think I would let that little girl kill me, no it was you I wanted dead." Kaoru smiled evilly. Kenshin hit the ground.

Kenshin opened his eyes and stared at two sets of eyes above him. He pushed himself from the ground and dusted himself off.

"You really shouldn't sit up there, if you're going to fall." Misao said as she poked him in the chest.

"Well had I known I was going to go to sleep I wouldn't have." Kenshin argued.

"Still is sitting up there wise, I mean if you get lost in your thoughts you could be a target for people, or there is a chance that you might move or something maybe falling on your head." Misao took a breath and continued. "You could also witness something you wouldn't want to, or sitting up there could make it easier to see enemies. The roof could be weak to and you could fall through it, or..."

Kenshin sweat dropped throughout Misao's speech, until he heard her voice cut off. He looked up and saw Aoshi's hand over her mouth. "Misao please refrain from speaking that much."

Misao grew angry and bit Aoshi's hand. He pulled it away and glared at her. "Why would I do something stupid like that?"

"Rambling like you do is hard to understand you never take breaths in between your sentences. You also speak so fast we can't understand you anyway."

SLAP

Misao seethed with anger. She lowered her hand and ran into the room her and Aoshi shared, slamming the shojo shut.

Kenshin and Aoshi blinked after her, and Aoshi brought a hand up to his left cheek. He rubbed the red handprint on it.

"Well she seems to be back to normal." Kenshin stated. Aoshi shrugged and dropped his hand.

"Would you mind being quiet it's loud enough with the bugs. You all yelling and slamming things is hurting my head."

Aoshi and Kenshin turn to the figure hanging on to the post near the stairs.
