Chapter 1: Aching and hurting.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It all started with that dream I had. That dream, I wish to hold no lingering memories of it. But that is impossible, when it haunts your very living. I know it may just be a childish fear, but how can it? When it is someone you love that hurts you within that very dream. If only they had a remedy for these types of things, ::sigh:: , but that to, would be impossible.
::Sigh::, ::sigh. Kaoru kept sighing, as she mellowed out. She was in this state of mind, ever since that dream. Or as some people would call it: a rogue nightmare. Most rogue nightmares started out of too much stress or by some very bad memory twisted into a nightmare. Most side affects were: 1.) Too much sighing 2.) Sighing and mellowing out 3.) Not talk to your best friends and just stare blankly out into the universe 4.) If it got really bad you would be too traumatized to eat or do anything yourself. Hopefully it wouldn't get that far.
Kenshin was out buying tofu; while Yahiko was helping out at the Akabeko, with an all too eager face, to help out. With chores. Kaoru shook her head sideways and chuckled a hollow and bittersweet sound. `I really do wonder why he would be so eager to help out at the Akabeko, well I don't know. Maybe, because of some little shy waitress named Tsubame.'
Kaoru sighed again, when at that exact moment Kenshin yelled, “Tadaima!” Kaoru didn't even bother to wave or motion to him her presence. But Kenshin was already aware of her lingering and mellow presence. Opposite of what she used to be, now instead a mere shell of what she was.
Kenshin whispered something incoherent to no one in particular, “Kaoru, do you hurt and ache? Suffer or so? Because of what, my love?” he added, but still in a mere whisper.
Unfortunately, Kaoru was unable to comprehend his carefully whispered tones of love. But she knew he was speaking, by the movement and rhythm of his red lips.
Kenshin kept on carefully gazing at her, as if she was fragile and if he stared at her for too long, she would break into millions of pieces. He had a worried expression pierced onto his face. Careful as to not scare her, he walked toward her with very awkward and slow steps.
“Kaoru-dono, are you feeling okay?” Kenshin sat down next to her on the porch. “Lately, it seems as though you are depressed. Is there anything this one can do to assist you?” Kenshin's face turned to a very close resemblance of a worried puppy.
Kaoru didn't even look at Kenshin when she answered, “No, there's nothing you can do to help me.” She quietly murmured.
Kenshin turned her face towards him, by gently grabbing her chin and posing her so she can look face-to-face at him.
“Why, Kaoru-dono? Are you ashamed to look at this one? Is it my scarred past which makes you turn away? If so, this one will gladly leave when told to be.” he whispered gently.
Kaoru had a panic-stricken look on her face as she sobbed an incoherent reply. “NO! Please don't leave! When you left that day, ::sob:: , my world fell apart. So, please don't leave me.” she grabbed him as she sobbed on his chest.
Kenshin's body turned stiff at her comment and sobs. Kenshin merely just sat there with Kaoru sobbing on his chest. Kaoru was too busy to notice Kenshin's eye color at the moment. It was bordered between amethyst and gold amber.
As soon as her quiet sobs ceased, Kenshin picked up Kaoru and placed her onto his lap, and murmured to her lovingly, “Do not cry, for I will make it all better.”
Kaoru's eyes widened with shock, as his reference to himself became `I'. She shook her head up and down; she resembles a small terrified child, seeking only comfort from her father.

Kenshin and Kaoru have been sitting there for a few hours, with Kaoru on his lap, and Kenshin whispering soft tones of comfort to her.
Kenshin finally thought is was time to push on the subject of her suffering. “Kaoru, what is making you suffer?” Kenshin brushed a stray tear from her face.
“. . .” Kaoru just sat there gazing upon her hands as if Kenshin never said anything to her at the moment.
Kenshin took her hands immediately into his, while his became icy cold and needed the touch of someone warm and loving.
“Kenshin, your hands are freezing. Do you want to go put them into a bowl of searing water?” she shifted around a bit, “If you want to, I mean you don't have to.”
When she looked, she stared into the eyes that were feared many years ago, “Hitokiri Battousai.” she merely whispered into his face.
