Second ever RK fic here, people. I haven't seen the show in a while, so don't kill me if I get something wrong! I have no beta and I have no spell check. I tried to re-check this, but I don't know how well I did... Please ignore the spelling mistakes!
Long ago in the Bakumatsu, there was one assassin that everyone feared. This assassin killed in the shadows.
They say he made it rain with the blood of his numerous enemies.
They say that he killed women and children as well, since the blood of men was never enough for him.
They say that he was a vampire.
They... were correct.
Now, years later, as assassin known only in vampire circles as Hitokiri Battousai, strongest of vampires from drinking the blood of thousands and having been blooded by the legendary Hiko Seijiro, one of the first original vampires. Also, a traitor of the highest degree. Battousai is known in human circles as well, as an assassin that killed many- no one ever managed to record all the people he killed- during the war. A legend, still possibly living among them. A hero to the people- the man that won the war.
But, as legends tend to do, this story died out and was replaced by a far less pleasent story. A story about a man who killed all witnesses to his many crimes and then hid the corpses where they would easily be found in the morning. A cold-hearted killer whose eyes could freeze your blood before he ripped you apart with his bare hands.
And, to a select few known as vampire hunters, the Hitokiri Battousai is their greatest enemy that might one day lead the vampires in revolt against normal humans. A vampire that should be killed on sight. A vampire that should never have existed, and should never have been let loose in the war, allowed to drink blood at his leisure and get stronger with each crimson mouthful.
A very dangerous enemy.
A vampire hunter - a girl- with black hair and light blue eyes warily regarded her foe. He was strong, no doubt- he had killed ten people in Tokyo alone, and she was not about to let him escape.
Yes, he was strong- but she had to be stronger.
The vampire lunged at her. She blocked, but cursed as she realized that the lunge had been a feint. He had dove under her guard and punched straight up, hitting her chin with such force her head was forcibly thrown back, he grip on her bokken lost as she fell backwards onto the cold ground.
The vampire smirked at her.
"You were a damn sight harder to fight than a lot of others, girlie." he said, dusting himself off. He examined a cut on one of his arms. "Wood soaked in holy water, I'll betcha. Stings like hell." The vampire hunter glared at the confident vampire, wishing her bokken was in reach. The vampire turned to look at her, almost contemplative.
"You're strong. Not near my level, of course. Hold still." The vampire suddenly knelt beside her and pinned her arms down, making her head hit the ground with an unsightly 'thump'. She yelped with shock and then pain, now wanting nothing more than to rub her aching head. She didn't even notice her he straddled her, bending over to get to her neck.
"Let me go!" she demanded, struggling to free herself. She froze when she felt fangs lightly brush her juglar vein.
"Much better." the vampire whispered. "Vampire hunter blood is a rare treat for my kind. Especially a woman vampire hunter- not common. Thank you for your gift." he said sarcastically, almost chuckling. The vampire hunter closed her eyes, biting her lower lip. She tried to move, but she was pinned by the vampire's bodyweight on top of her.
'Is this how I'm going to die? Bitten by a vampire?' she thought, trying to curl her neck into her body, to shrink it until her couldn't get at her blood, but he was already there.
She felt a slight pinprick as the clod fangs touched her skin. She shut her eyes tighter, trying not to think about what was happening...
A sharp 'swoosh' sliced through the night air, followed by a release of pressure at her throat and a loud 'thump' as something hit the ground nearby. A warm, wet splash covered the front of her face, gi and hakama and she nearly gagged on the smell. Blood.
'That thump... the vampire's head?' she thought, surprised.
She opened her eyes, looking up. She knew that she had to look like hell- blood was splashed all over her and some was dripping down her chin. She sat up, the vampire's body that had been on top of her falling and crumbling to dust, as all vampire's did about a minute after they had been killed. She looked at the stranger that had saved her.
It was a rather short, slender man with long red hair tied back into a ponytail and violet eyes. A cross-shaped scar marred one of his cheeks.
He extended a hand to her.
"Are you okay?" he asked. She nodded, taking the offered hand.
"Thank you for saving me..." she trailed off, looking at the man expectantly.
"Himura Kenshin." he said, smiling pleasently at her. "May I ask about your name?" The girl smiled.
"Kamiya Kaoru. Thank you again, Himura-sa-"
"Kenshin is fine, Kaoru-dono." Kenshin interrupted, a still-pleasent smile on his face.
"Kenshin, then. Why were you out so late at night? Not that I'm not grateful, but..."
"I just arrived in town and was looking for a place to stay when I came across you and the vampire. Not a moment too soon, either." Kaoru brightened.
"You can stay at my dojo, then." Kenshin's eyes got wide.
"No... I couldn't possibly-"
"It's the least I can do. You just saved my life, and the life of many others." She nodded at the pile of dust. "He had killed ten people before tonight, and would have killed more had you not stopped him." She shot him a quizzical look.
"Are you a vampire hunter?" At head shake 'no', she continued. "How did you know that he was a vampire, then?"
"I know a few things. Maybe you would like to go to your dojo and get washed up?" Kaoru looked down at herself and nodded.
"Yeah, I should, shouldn't I? Follow me please." Just like that, Kamiya Kaoru and Himura Kenshin walked to the Kamiya dojo, Kaoru grabbing her bokken as they left the alley she had cornered the vampire in.
'Who exactly is Kenshin? He didn't answer my question- and normal humans can't tell who vampires are. Maybe he has the sense to be a vampire hunter but wasn't picked up?' Kaoru frowned. Vampire hunters- once old and unable to fight- spent their time traveling, gathering up youngsters who showed promise. Normal people did not even know of vampires, except for those that survived an attack, and they were few and far between.
She glanced at Kenshin, who seemed to be enjoying the walk through town- she had decided to stick to the main streetswhere there were lamps. It gave advance warning of a vampire attack.
'I'll just find out about him later.' she thought, concentrating on avoiding more vampires.
'A little reckless, aren't I?' Kenshin thought. He had just accepted a vampire hunter's offer of a room at her dojo.
'A very beautiful vampire hunter.' he reminded himself. Kenshin shook the thought off. Her beauty did not mean that she would hesitate to kill him or wouldn't fight well. Her beauty lay within her soul- she was vibrant and filled with life, innocent even though he could tell that she had lost something dear to her.
Age for vampires meant an increase in power, as long as your mouth was often wet with blood. His power had come from the blood he was given as a youth, and then the blood of the countless he had slain before, during, and after the Bakumatsu.
He licked his lips at the memory. He had had his fill of blood every night, and no one was any the wiser. He power had been only slightly higher than that of others, but he had risen exponantially in terms of power during the war. Few vampires could give him a fight anymore.
Newbie's like the one he had just killed weren't worth it. Only ten in Tokyo? Kaoru had made it seem like it was terrible. Kenshin found himself agreeing with her- humans should be left out of this. He had seen the good side of humans that few vampires ever see- a kindness in humans extended to him by the few that had known he was a vampire.
'Katsura...' he thought. 'Tomoe...' They had been kind- Tomoe had even offered some of her own blood when he had been sick with the need- and had died during the war. In their memory, he had decided to kill the reckless vampires, letting the ones with control live.
He- the most feared by the vampire hunters and strongest of the vampires- had become something of a vampire hunter himself.
He chuckled at teh thought, making Kaoru turn to look at him.
"What's so funny?" she asked, curious. He shook his head.
"Nothing, Kaoru-dono." She smiled a bit uncertainly, looking ahead. He smirked a bit sadly behind her back.
'If only she knew...'
What did you think? Is it any good- should I keep going?
