Rurouni Kenshin Fan Fiction ❯ Blood, Death, and Love ❯ Confusion ( Chapter 4 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Okay, so I could only get three chapters written. I had very little free time at camp.... enjoy!

Kaoru awoke. She stretched and stood.
'That was a nice patrol last night.' she thought. 'Nice and easy.' She walked over to her closet, nearly tripping over something that felt like cloth in her path.
"Huh?" she said, her mind not fully awake yet. She sighed upon seeing her bloodstained clothes.
"That's going to be a pain to wash out..." she muttered to herself, opening her closet and picking out a kimono. It wasn't very fancy, but she liked it- a soft purple with darker purple butterfiles and a light blue ibi to go with it. She retied her hair with a blue ribbon- one of her favorites- and regretted her decision not to undo her hairstyle before she went to sleep. It was all tangled. She brushed her fingers through the ponytail, but soon gave up.
She folded up her futon and walked towards the kitchen, shocked at the sight that awaited her.
Sanosuke and Megumi sat near a tied up Kenshin. Megumi held his sword so that he couldn't get it, and Sanosuke kept an eye on Kenshin so that he didn't move. Kenshin was just smiling rather sheepishly.
"Ohayo Kaoru-dono." he said, spotting her first. Kaoru marched right over to Sanosuke and Megumi, anger evident on her face.
"What do you think you're doing?!" she demanded. Sanosuke looked a bit surprised.
"What do you mean, jou-chan?" Kaoru gestured to Kenshin, who was passively watching the exchange.
"Why did you tie him up?" She glanced at Kenshin, bowing slightly. "I'm sorry about all this."
"It's fine. Could you please untie me, though?" he asked.
"I don't get it." Sanosuke said, raising an eyebrow as Kaoru untied Kenshin.
"There's a lot you don't get." Megumi said, looking at him. She glanced at Kaoru. "What's the deal with this guy, then?"
"He saved me from a vampire last night. I invited him to stay here because he didn't have a place to go." Kaoru said, glaring at her sister. Megumi's eyes widened.
"He knew what-"
"Yes, he did. Who made breakfast?" Kaoru asked.
"I did, Kaoru-dono. It shouldn't be too cold by now. I will warm it up." Kenshin said, turning to go to the kitchen. Kaoru looked at him in surprise.
"You can cook?"
"Aa." he said, entering the kitchen and closing the door behind him.

Kenshin sighed, leaning against the now closed door and rubbing his wrists.
'That was annoying, but at least they won't suspect me- they won't think about the possibility of me being a vampire even if they do catch me doing something strange.' He dropped his hand and moved to the soup.
He tested it.
'A few minutes should do.' He lit the fire again and pleaced the soup upon it, letting it heat up. As it did, he thought.
'That man in the white coat. He's a vampire, no doubt, and strong. It's strange that he hasn't attacked Kaoru, or any of the others here. Maybe she did him a service and he feels obligated not to attack. Maybe he is like me, a protector of humans even though he is neither human nor vampire hunter.' His thoughts turned to the other person he had not yet met. The other vampire.
'I couldn't tell how strong he was, and I don't know either of their reasons for being here. I should be on my guard around them.'
He checked the soup again. It was almost ready. He searched the cupboards for cups and bowls. Many were chipped, but still usable. He gathered six bowls, spoons, and cups, setting them on a tray he found. That done, he put out the fire and brought the tray to the table just outside the door.
The two from earlier and Kaoru were sitting at the table.
"Your food will be here in a moment." he said, turning to get the soup from the kitchen. He grabbed it and set it carefully on the table.
"Thank you, Kenshin." Kaoru said as he ladeled soup into her bowl. He served Megumi and Sanosuke too, serving himself last.
"Please, enjoy." Kenshin said, smiling. He ate a bite of his soup.
"I still don't know your names." he said, looking at Sanosuke and Megumi.
"Sagara Sanosuke." Sanosuke said, nodding. "Good soup." He dug in with great enthusiasim, not bothering to apologize for tying him up.
"Kamiya Megumi." Megumi said, delicately sipping her soup. "This is better than tanuki-chan makes." she added, smirking at Kaoru.
"I told you not to call me that!" Kaoru said, glaring at her sister indignantly.
"Will the other two be joining us?" Kenshin asked. He motioned to the last two bowls.
"Misao should be up soon. Aoshi probably already left." Kaoru explained. "Aoshi's the other guy that lives here, and you've met Misao." Kenshin nodded.
The rest of the meal continued in silence, Sanosuke sneaking suspicious glances at Kenshin.
'I have a bad feeling about this guy.' Sanosuke thought. Something in his blood was reacting to this seemingly gentle man, and he had learned to rely on his instincts. He was used to being one of the toughest guys around, but now his instincts told him that this man was stronger than he was- he was stronger than Aoshi. Aoshi may have been a stronger vampire, but even Aoshi didn't have his vampire blood telling Sanosuke to leave the country to get away from what it saw as a dangerous enemy.

After breakfast, Kenshin washed the dishes. The day passed in a sort of lazy way, one of those days when you just want to relax.
"Megumi, could you please wash this for me?" Kaoru asked her sister. Misao- who had woken up shortly after breakfast- looked at Kaoru.
"You left the blood to soak in all night? It's going to be ten times harder to wash out now!"
"If you want it to be washed, then wash it yourself. I'm leaving for the clinic in a few minutes." Megumi explained, packing a few herbs and medicines in her bag.
"Me?!" Kaoru said. "I have to train a few young vampire hunters today. One just arrived." Kaoru said. She turned to Misao. "Could you wash this?" Misao looked flabbergasted.
"You've got to be joking. I have to train with the Oniwabanshu today!" Misao said. Kaoru groaned.
"I could wash it for you, Kaoru-dono." Kenshin said, appearing behind her. Kaoru looked at him, shocked.
"But you've already made us breakfast... and, well..."
"I can do the laundry. Think of it as me paying my rent to stay here." He looked at Megumi and Misao. Both seemed shocked speechless.
"If you have any laundry, could you please bring it here?" he asked. Both nodded dumbly before drifting off to get their laundry.
"Thank you so much, Kenshin, but you really don't have to do this." she said, handing him the bloody garments.
"No, I enjoy doing tasks like this for you. Do you have more laundry? I can do it all today." Kaoru nodded, going to grab her dirty clothes.
"If it's not too much trouble, could you also go shopping?" she asked, returning with an armful of dirty clothes.
"Of course I can. What do you need?" Kenshin asked, effortlessly taking the clothes from Kaoru.
"I'll write a list. Come look for me when you're done with this so I can give it to you." Kenshin nodded.
"Here ya go!" Misao said, dropping a large pile of clothes at Kenshin's feet. "Thank you."
"Here's mine." Megumi said, also dropping a large pile of laundry at Kenshin's feet.
"I'll see you later. Could you show me where the detergent and basin are? I've already located the well." Kaoru nodded, going to the kitchen to get him a large basin as Kenshin picked up the dirty clothes carefully. Misao ran off to get him the detergent. That left Megumi to help Kenshin.
She picked up a few clothes, trying to make sure that none were left on the floor.
"Thank you Megumi-dono." kenshin said, smiling at her. She just smiled back.
"Consider this my apology for tying you up earlier.'
"No harm done." Kenshin replied, walking towards the door. He carefully manuvered it open, then held it open for Megumi. She smiled and nodded, walking ahead of him to a spot near the clothesline. She dropped her pile in the dirt.
"There we go." she said. "Do a good job with the laundry." she instructed, turning and going back into the house.

I know, I know! Not a whole lot of vampire action in this chappie. It will go through a rough patch- but just you wait! The vampires are doing very little at the moment, and they won't be doing tons of stuff until I get them to the Shishio arc. It starts with Kenshin fight a certain wolf and then it steadily gets more vampir-y from then on out.I don't know where it will end.
For those of you who would like to know how soon this will be, figure about chapter seven or eight. Small bits of vamp activity is mentioned, but nothing big big happens until then. (Unless you count Yahiko...)
Until next time.
