Chapter 2: Moving day and Beginning Introductions
Kaoru woke up to sounds of furniture being moved throughout the house. Then she realized her bed and dresser were the only things left in her room. She got up silently to do her usual morning routine, and emerged from her bathroom 10 minutes later. Kaoru threw on a pair of black baggy jeans and a black tee with a saying. "I'm awake. But that doesn't mean I have to listen." She sighed as she slipped on her boots, then she finally plopped down on her bed. Other homes go with tradition, and Auntie could care less. But then again she'll probably care in the other house. Then Kaoru's thoughts went back to last nights events. Katsura-san gave Aunt Taka information, but why the connection between the two?. Even if I come across any of the documents, there in different languages. She never has them in Japanese or English. Why does she have to be so secretive?. Kaoru's thought broke as she heard loud knocks on her door. Kaoru got up, why couldn't they leave her alone she thought. Then she opened the door to see an half-asleep Yahiko.
"Message from Taka. Get dressed and help with the last of the furniture." He walked away without another word, slouching as he descended the stairs.
"Help with what? Most of it's finished already anyways." She left her door open and followed him down the stairs. To see her aunt without her usual cigarette, looking peeved as ever.
"What's wrong with you?" Kaoru sat on the floor because of the lack of options. Taka glanced over from the window.
" My driver is late."
"I thought you were driving it down?."
"No, I'm taking the SUV, like usual."
A moment of silence passed over the bunch. Kaoru then started thinking about her new school. Both her and Yahiko had to transfer, since the new school year had already started. Both of them had been informed that they'd attend private schools. Kaoru just hoped she wouldn't get stuck with bratty rich kids. Sure her test scores were great, but the tuition was still quite hefty for the school. Then again Aunt Taka is well off so it's not like I have to worry. But it was already transferred over, no changing it. She'd start after summer break. Then Kaoru's stomach decided to disrupt the silence. She got up and went down hallway to the kitchen. To find a box of doughnuts as her salvation. She picked up one. " Oh it's so healthy for me..." Then she started to eat her jelly-filled doughnut. Kaoru glanced around the kitchen and remember the different occasions when she chose to cook. After almost burning down the house twice, her aunt banned her from using the stove or oven for that matter. Then she heard movements from the other parts of the house. Assuming that everything was underway yet again.
Kaoru sighed as she got in the passenger side of her aunt's SUV. She slipped on her sunglasses, to block out the morning sun. Atleast it's not going to rain when were unloading. She watched as Taka paid and thanked those who helped. Kaoru leaned back and put on her seatbelt. Then looking back to see Yahiko already dozing off in the back. With the moving truck already gone, Taka got in and started the car. She glanced over to Kaoru. "Next stop Tokyo." They both looked at the house as they pulled out of the driveway. Kaoru started to relax, she'd miss Kyoto. But she could always come back sometime. Then not even 15 minutes into the ride , Yahiko was wide awake and ready to annoy. He leaned forward into the back of Kaoru's seat.
"Are we there yet?" with a michievous tone in his voice
" Don't start." Kaoru didn't even bother to look back as she replied. She put on her headphones, and listened to Dir en Grey for the rest of the trip. Toning out the sounds of Taka's radio, Yahiko's complaining, and the traffic on the highway.
The drive over was only a few hours. Kaoru had long ignored Yahiko and his annoying tactics. As the roads got busier, she glanced out her window more often. Getting glimpses of her new city. She couldn't remember what the district was called, but she assumed it was a popular school district. They pulled through a series of residential streets, with either apartmnet complexs for college students or just regular homes. Then finally at the end of one of the streets, she saw her new home in all its glory. " Wow! It looks great, how much did you have to get done in it?" Kaoru looked over at her Aunt as they pulled up into the newly made driveway.
" Well I had to get alot of repairs done, plus I had to get most of the electric wiring redone. So you can do the math. Let's just say it cost me quite a bit. But maybe if my father, your grandfather actually took care of it more then it wouldn't have been in such bad shape." She parked it and turned off the ignition. Yahiko stopped playing his gameboy advance and got out without a word. While Taka finally lit up one of her cigarettes, Kaoru scrunched up her nose alittle.
" You made me quit smoking, so when are you going to quit those?"
" When I'm dead. I've been smoking for twelve years. I'm not about to stop now." Taka got out, leaving an annoyed Kaoru in the car. Then Kaoru finally got out rather then being stuck in the car any longer. They both made there way over to the moving truck. To see most of the furniture unloaded already. Kaoru grabbed a few of her boxes, and started heading in the house. Passing by the outerwalls, she glanced around the front yard. She was right she did get alot done. Then Kaoru slid open the front door, took off her shoes in the genkan and placed them on a rack. She passed by Yahiko's room to see him already setting up playstation and xbox.
" Hey shouldn't you be helping with your stuff?." Kaoru stood in his doorway with boxes in hand.
"Shouldn't you stop being an ugly tanuki?" Yahiko stated without looking away from his game systems. Kaoru set down her boxes in the hallway, then walked in his room with her fists clenched. She then slide the shoji door closed behind her. " Time for some pay back, Yahiko-chan!"
She emerged five minutes later, pulling Yahiko out by his ear.
" Ow Ow you ugly Tanuki!" He yelled as he got a few more hits to the head . She threw him forward into the hall. " Now get out there and help." Kaoru gave him a cold glare and picked up her boxes. " And if you don't help, then your training tomorrow will be the toughest you've ever seen." With that Yahiko walked off mumbling about stupid ugly girls. Kaoru walked past another hallway. She saw her Aunt across the courtyard, standing by a lone sakura tree. " To bad it isn't in bloom." She knew she startled her aunt. Taka looked over to her, clouded gaze in her eyes. Her usual gaze when she was deep in thought.
" Yes, it's to late in the year for it to bloom. We'll just have to wait for next spring." Taka walked back out through the main entry way. Kaoru watched her go, she shook her head. It wasn't her business. Kaoru walked a few more feet to find an open shoji door. " Finally my room." She set her boxes down by the door and head back outside to see if her aunt needed more help. After walking back through the series of hallways. Kaoru made it back to the genkan, slipped back on her shoes. Slid open the front door and ran out the front yard, passing the outer gates.
" Aunt Taka, do you need anymore hel-"Kaoru stopped short as she saw four other people talking to her Aunt and Yahiko. Scratch that two little girls, an old man, and a girl with a long braid. Yahiko and the girl seemed to be already arguing, when Kaoru showed up. Both stopped as they saw her.
" Who's this Yahiko?"
" What this Weasel! She's-"
"Don't call me a Weasel you little brat!" She yelled as she started to choke him. Kaoru sweatdropped, it was definitely going to be a long day. The girl stopped when Taka gave her a look. "The names Misao Makimachi. Pleased to meet you..um.."
" It's Kaoru Kamiya. Just call me Kaoru. Makimachi-san" Kaoru bowed her head alittle.
" I'll only call you Kaoru if you drop the Makimachi-san. It makes me sound old. Misao is just fine." Kaoru smirked at that. " Alright Misao."
Yahiko finally recovered, " It makes you sound old, because you are. Look the two hags unite!"
Before either could hit him, he ran off inside. " Come back here you brat!" Misao chased after him, leaving Kaoru in the dust. That's when she heard the old man and the little girls laughing. She finally turned around to see an amused face on her Aunt. " I see Misao is making herself at home. Oh by the way this is Dr. Gensai and his to granddaughters, Ayame and Suzume." Both of the girls waved at her at their introduction. Kaoru knelt down to the two sisters. " Hello Ayame-chan and Suzume-chan. You can call me Kaoru-oneesan, if you'd like." She smiled at the two, both of them somewhat identical. The younger one liking to repeat her sister's words.
"Kaoru-oneesan! Hey Ojii-san can we play with Kaoru-oneesan!"
" Play with Kaoru-oneesan!"
Both of the girls gave their Grandfather the puppy dog faces. The source of there begging success. " I'm afraid not today you two. I have to get back to the clinic, and they need time to unpack everything." Kaoru got up as the girls gave sounds of dissapointment. " I wouldn't mind if you brought them over tomorrow, Dr. Gensai." Her aunt stated simply while picking up another box. " Yes well Konoko-chan, that would be perfect instead of a sitter. Both me and my assistant will be booked all day tomorrow, and I'll have no time for the two." Dr.Gensai smiled as he ruffled the two girls hair. He picked up Suzume and held Ayame's hand. " Bye Kaoru-chan, it was good to see you again." "Bye Kaoru-oneesan!"
Kaoru smiled as they went, and turned to her Aunt. "Konoko-chan?" She teased. Taka cocked her eyebrow at her. " Do you want to sleep outside tonight?" She started to walk away with her box. Kaoru caught up with her. "How does Dr. Gensai know me?"
" Well look at this house, you were born here. Not in a hospital." Kaoru stopped at the front door. "I was born here in Tokyo. You never told me that." Both her and Taka took there shoes off in the genkan. And Taka stopped in what would be the living room. "Kaoru, I took you in when you were 14. I assumed my brother-in-law would have told you your birth place. But I guess not. Dr. Gensai was the doctor that delivered you. That's how he knows you. Then your father convinced my sister to move to Kyoto, leaving our family behind." Kaoru stood there in silence while recieving the information. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have a few rooms to unpack. Or straighten the furniture that they put in the wrong rooms."
Kaoru watched her go yet again. She knew her Aunt didn't approve of her father. But she didn't hate him, just disliked him. Her aunt only had some living respect for her father, because of his love for her sister. Kaoru's thoughts were broken as she saw Misao walking towards her, scratching the back of her head laughing slightly.
" Is Konoko-san around?"
" What did you do to Yahiko? Hopefully nothing my aunt will kill you for."
" I threw him in the fish pond. I wish I had my digital camera. He emerged with a fish flapping around in his mouth." Kaoru started laughing " Now that would have been a priceless sight. Come on let's go to my room." Kaoru started walking down the hallway that lead to her room, the room open to the courtyard. " This place is bigger then my gramps place here in Tokyo." Kaoru walked in to her room as Misao slid the door closed. " Oh really? I suppose it is pretty big." Kaoru sat down on her bed and Misao sat next to her.
"Are you kidding me? I suppose it's pretty big. It's like a damn mansion. But anyways, where are you going to school?"
"Umm...Shinkunji. That private sch-"
"That's great! We'll go to the same school! Then I can introduce you to Aoshi-sama." Misao finished with a dreamily glint in her eyes.
" Well atleast I know someone going there now. Is the school full of rich brats or what?" Kaoru was hoping for a "no". She didn't want to get stuck with whiners. " Well there are some, but our group is bearable. I'll introduce you to everyone." Misao smirked at her. Kaoru was curious on this Aoshi-sama of Misao's. " So who's Aoshi-sama?"
" The sexiest man alive...oops sorry. His full name is Aoshi Shinomori. He's a year ahead of us, and he's really good at kempo. But he can be to gloomy at times. I'm just dedictated to trying to bring a smile to his face. A full smile but a smirk like I've seen."
" So what other people do you hang out with?"
" Well, theres Aoshi-sama, Rooster head, Himura, Megumi, Soujiro, Okita, Toki, and Shougo. But Megumi is usually busy helping Dr. Gensai."
"Is there anyone your group dislikes in practicular?" Kaoru always had to ask, but she didn't want to sound rude. She wanted to know who to be careful of in the school. If she were to hang out with the group. "Well we get along with just about everyone, except for Enishi. He's always harassing Himura."
Kaoru's heart stopped. Her old boyfriend here in Tokyo, she remember him having to move because a family incident. But he didn't tell her the details. " Enishi Yukishiro..." She mumbled, but Misao caught it. " So you know him?" She glanced over at Kaoru. " Yeah I knew him back in junior high." She left it at that, she didn't want to tell Misao anymore. " What time is it?" Misao yawned, while she stretched. " It's 3 o'clock." Kaoru looked at her watch. Misao hopped off her bed and handed her a card. " We'll I better get going before I get chewed out by Gramps. Just call the restuarant and tell them your a friend of Misao's. They'll give my home number if I'm not there." Misao crossed the room and slid open the shoji door. " Call me tomorrow and I'll give you a tour of Tokyo." Misao gave her a peace sign and left. Kaoru sighed and fell back on her bed. Looking at the card " The Aoiya, located in Tokyo and Kyoto." Kaoru layed there looking at her ceiling. " Another day pasted, well atleast I know someone. I don't know if I can consider her a friend. Maybe in time, when I get over being left by the others." Then Kaoru started remembering her time in Junior high with Enishi. But that was before her father died. " I guess I'll be seeing you again Enishi, maybe now I can ask you for more details on why you had to leave."
Author's notes: Well if you like the chapter please review. My next chapter will introduce more of the characters. Believe me, I'm eager to get Kenshin in the story already. But hey atleast I put Misao in there. I have a whole storyline already plotted out. So hopefully I don't get any writer's block along the way. And I'm hoping to start writing the next chapter soon. So until the next chapter, ja-ne!
