Rurouni Kenshin Fan Fiction ❯ Eternity ❯ Star-crossed Lovers ( Chapter 1 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Hi! This is my second fanfic, but my first `Rurouni Kenshin' one, so please be kind. I have had this idea for awhile, so I thought I'd try it out. Unlike my first fanfic, `Date', this will have little to no comedy in it. (Alright, alright. I can't help it. I can't live with out a little comedy.::smirk::) It's still really good though, I swear!

Summery: Kaoru made a promise to wait forever for Kenshin to come back to her, even after his untimely death. It's been over 100 years later and the lonely ghost of Kaoru still waits for her love. When a rookie Manga writer with an old X shaped scar moves in her house she's convinced it's her lover's reincarnation, back for her. She must make him remember his old life; they're lives together, if they ever want to be together for eternity. Though, there is one more problem. He can only see her at night. [AU] KenshinxKaoru SanosukexMegumi

I hope you all like it! Please enjoy it! Oh, and it can get a little confusing at some points, but you'll get it at the end. Also, there will be a little SanoxMeg, but they won't overshadow our stars. I also have some Japanese in here, so if you want to know what it means….

Aneue= older sister

Ototo= younger brother

Dono= miss (more respectful than san)

Chan= friend that's a girl or little boy

Sama= lord or master

I think that is all I have in this chapter. If I ever put anymore, I'll tell what it means for you people who don't know.

Disclaimer: If any of you had half a brain, you'd think if I owned `Rurouni Kenshin' why would I be on this site, making up my own little stories? Really, people these days…

Eternity Chapter 1: Star-crossed Lovers

"Kenshin! Hurry, you must leave! Misao-chan is waiting for you to help you leave!" whispered a girl with raven-black hair tied up in a ribbon and deep blue eyes. She had a look of terror and tears on her lovely face.

"No Kaoru, I'm not going without you!" a young man with blood-red hair and violet eyes also a sword tied at his hip whispered back.

"Please! If you're caught, they'll kill you! I can't bear to live without you!" Tears now running of her face, staining her rich kimono. "I'm to marry into royalty and if they find out how I've fallen in love with a commoner they'll take you away!"

"If you love me, so, please come with me!" he pleaded. "If you love me and YOURSELF come with me. Where we'll live our lives free and happy."

"Please Kaoru-aneue, go with him" said a voice, hiding behind a wall.

"Yahiko-ototo?! What in gods name are…"

"Shhhh….be quite!" Yahiko scolded "Aneue, you have always been locked away from the world. Trained to be a wife to royalty, until you met, Kenshin. I want my sister to be happy, like Kenshin. Please go Kaoru-aneue! I will distract them while you get out, both of you."

Kaoru smiled. "Thanks, Yahiko-ototo! We will meet again." Giving him a hug, she then went over to Kenshin.

As Yahiko turned away to distract his father and the maids he heard someone call him.

"Yahiko, I will remember this forever. You are a man to help your sister like this, and a brother to me" Kenshin said with a bow.

Yahiko smiled as he went out the door. Yahiko had always hated seeing his sister locked away. The only purpose their parents had ever seen her for was to be bread into royalty. Never being able to explore the world. She had always looked so sad. But then Kenshin came. He was hired as a guard to protect the future bride to the royal family.

Yahiko did not know how they met, or fell in love, but he was happy that it did happen. He could tell she was different at first by the way she acted. She would make more of her own choices, not her parents, or maids. Also she would disappear for long periods at a time. Finally, being one of her only friends, she told Yahiko about Kenshin.

Yahiko turned around to look at his sister's room once more. "Good luck, Kaoru, Kenshin. I wish the best for you" he whispered quietly.

"We must hurry! Yahiko's distracting will only last for so long" said Kenshin. "We will meet Misao-dono threw the back door."

Kaoru just nodded as they quietly slipped out her door and run down the hallway. As they were running her pink ribbon that kept up her long hair fell out. It was almost caught the attention of another guard, but he missed it barely. They puffed out a sigh of relive, as she reacted down to pick it up, so they'd leave no trail. Kenshin could take out anyone if someone found them, but they were trying to avoid it. They finally saw a nervous girl with long black hair in a braid at the back door.

"Sorry it took so long Misao-dono" Kenshin apologized.

"No problem. I love sitting around like a dead duck as I wait for the one they're hunting." She looked at Kaoru and smiled. "I had a feeling you'd be joining Himura, Kaoru-chan."

Kaoru smiled at her friend. "Will you tell, Misao-chan? If you do, we might just have to do something to you." She smiled even wider.

"You wouldn't do that to your only girl-friend…would you?" she asked looking at her friend's cheesy grin. She sighed. "You know I'd never do a thing so horrible to you."

"That's good enough for me, now let us hurry!" Kenshin urged.

Misao led them threw the back yard and threw the fence. Once outside the property, she pointed to a small shrine, not 100 yards away.

"I put some bags there for you. There's some food and enough money to get you out of the city."

"Thank-you, Misao-chan! I will miss you! Please take care of my brother for me" said Kaoru giving her friend a farewell hug.

"I thank-you for your help. I'm glad we got to meet" Said Kenshin bowing and then giving a grin.

"Himura, take care of her, farewell" she said tears running down her face. She then turned around to go back in the house. Though sad to see her friends leave, she was happy Kaoru-chan would finally be free.

They raced up the walk way to the shire. Kenshin would stop every once-in-awhile to see if anyone was following them. Though he would see know one near, he had a bad feeling.

When they finally reached their bags, Kenshin dusted the fallen Sakura of their bags, while Kaoru quickly retied her hair with the pink ribbon. She then went over to him to give him a peck on the lips.

"We've half way threw. The hardest parts over" she whispered in his ear.

"I wouldn't say half way, but yes the hardest part is over" he replied leaning over to get another kiss.

"I wouldn't say the hardest part is over just yet" said a voice interrupting their kiss. They both looked up to see Enishi, Kaoru's soon-to-be husband, with his sword drawn, ready for a fight. Kenshin stepped in front of Kaoru, his hand on the hilt of his sword.

"Enishi?! H…How did you know?!" asked a frightened Kaoru.

Enishi got a very angry look on his face. "I saw you two! I saw you two! I saw her, confess her love to you! I saw you say the same thing! Kaoru was supposed to say that to me not you! Kaoru is MINE! Not some common ass hole off the streets. You will die here and now for this! And Kaoru will beg for me forgiveness! She WILL beg! And she WILL be my wife! And she WILL love me!

With that, Kenshin drew his sword, ready to attack. Kaoru backed off, not wanting to get in their way.

`Kenshin…please…please be careful!' she prayed.

Enishi smiled and charged at Kenshin. Kenshin blocked and attacked next. It was a pretty even sword fight until Kenshin lost his balance. Taking the opportunity, Enishi slashed at Kenshin's neck. Kenshin moved, but not fast enough, causing his stomach to get the brutal wound.

Kaoru cried out, scared for him. Wishing she could somehow stop the two. He quickly got back on his feet and went back after Enishi. He managed to get a little wound on Einshi's arm, but nothing to serious. Kenshin had always thought he was a great swordsman, but never before had he gone against someone as strong and quick as him. He was beginning to lose his energy, also the wound on his stomach was causing much pain and blood lose.

Enishi went for his head, but he caught his sword in a lock. Enishi smiled. Kenshin had no idea where this came from. He had no idea Enishi had something up his sleeve until Kaoru screamed out, "Kenshin, watch out!"

But it was too late. Enishi had pulled out a small knife and stabbed Kenshin. Kenshin's head swirled with pain. As he fell he saw Kaoru's face filled with horror and sadness.

"I know you're still alive, you worm! You know why? Worms, even if cut in half will still live. But I want you to see how happy I will be with my Kaoru first" he said with an evil grin walking over to Kaoru.

Kaoru turned to run away, but caught her arm. He twirled her around so they were face to face. Her eyes were puffy and red from crying.

"My Kaoru, I never noticed how beautiful your face is when your frightened. I'll have to make you scared more often." He then grabbed her face, forcing her into a kiss. Kaoru tried to pull away, but he'd only hold on tighter. She bit his lip and ran toward the fallen Kenshin.

Enishi was furious. "Why do you disobey me?!" he screamed walking over to her. "It's because this wimp taught you to think for yourself, when I'm the only one to tell you what to think of! I guess I'll have to reteach you!"

He then grabbed Kaoru and started to drag her near the shrine. Kaoru kicked and screamed, hoping someone would hear. He than forced her on the ground and began to rip off her silky kimono.

Kenshin awoke, hearing his beloved Kaoru's screams. He quickly got off the ground to see Enishi tearing at her kimono. He grabbed his sword angrily and charged. Enishi, too busy with Kaoru did not see him. He only noticed when it was too late. Kenshin had dug his sword, deep into his chest.

Enishi stood up slowly. He looked down to see the frightened Kaoru, eyes wide. Kenshin was scared too. He had never killed a person before to night. Though he was a swordsman, he had never killed.

"My sweet Kaoru, I'm sorry" he chocked out, blood coming out his mouth. He then traveled over to Kenshin. He stumbled but caught himself on the collar of Kenshin's gi.

"I envy you. You won her love. The thing I was after for years…"

Enishi then brought up his knife and made a long diagonal cut down his cheek before collapsing dead.

Everything was silent for a moment before Kenshin collapsed too.

"Kenshin!" screamed Kaoru running over to him. Kenshin looked up weakly to meet her gaze.

"I'll be fine, as long as you're with me." He managed a small smile. Kaoru tried to return it, but she couldn't. She then sat down hosting Kenshin's head on her lap. She stroked his cheek, wiping away the blood from his wound onto her already ruined kimono.

Kenshin closed his eyes, enjoying that his beloved Kaoru was right next to him. He felt a tear land on his forehead. He opened his eyes to see Kaoru leaning over him, her tears washing off the blood off her face from Enishi.

"Please don't cry. No matter what we'll always be together." His hand crept up her face pulling her down to meet his lips in a kiss.

Kaoru quickly jerked her head up. "What's wrong?" asked Kenshin.

"They found us, they are coming. We've got to leave fast, or they'll kill you! Not just for being in love with me, but now for killing a royal!"

Kenshin looked over to the dead Enishi.

Kaoru began to help pull him up, but he stopped her. He embraced her as the fell to the ground again.

"No, we won't make it. I won't at least. Please go, be free, find another man who will love you for you."

"Kenshin, what are you saying?! I'll never leave you! I could never love again! If they kill you, they kill me!" she said as she dug her head further into his chest.

Kenshin could feel her tears soaking threw his gi. He smiled and lifted her head up so their eyes would meet.

"Would you wait for me?" he asked.

"What?"

"Would you wait for me, for eternity?"

"Of course I would. Where are you going?"

"I will come back for you. It may not be soon, but I will" he said running his bloody fingers threw her messed up hair. He then pulled out her pink ribbon, and reached for Enishi's knife. He tied her ribbon around the knife and handed it to her.

"Finish the cut. Make an X, so you'll know it's me."

Kaoru didn't know what he meant, but she did it. She thought it was amazing how he didn't flinch when the shape object ran down his cheek, intersecting the other cut.

They could now see the guards running towards them. They were shouting things like, "There they are" or "Let's chop the damn soul's head off!"

When she finished she threw the knife aside and pulled him into a long kiss. He pulled away to whisper "I love you" in to her ear, before returning to her lips. Their kiss did not break until the guards pulled Kenshin off. He struggled at first, but being as wounded as he was, it was fruitless. Kaoru even tried to pry him away from the guards, but they easily smacked her aside.

She than saw her father making his way up to the shrine. She began to panic a little, but got control of herself. `I must be brave, for my love. He taught me that I'm my own person, that I THINK what I want and SAY what I want and DO what I want!' she thought.

Her father took one look at Kaoru and the dead Enishi before saying, "Kill him!"

"No! Please no!" shouted Kaoru as she ran over to her father. "I love him!"

Her father gave her a nasty glare before slapping her. "You will NEVER speak out of line! You were born to be proper, to be graceful, to wed into the royals! Nothing else! Not to love, not to explore, nothing!" he yelled. Kaoru looked away from him, not wanting to see his face.

"You ass hole!" he screamed at Kenshin. "You have befouled our daughter! You have killed a royal! You must DIE!" he stated before walking off.

"You're the ass hole! How could you keep your own daughter locked up? Your own daughter. You son of a bitch!" he screamed loud enough for all the guards to hear.

He turned his back and glared at him for a minute. He then made the signal to the main guard to kill him immediately. He then continued back towards the home.

A few of the guards went to pick up the dead form of Enishi. The ones with Kenshin began to follow, not wanting to kill the man in front of the weeping lady.

"Kenshin! I will wait for you!" she yelled watching them pull away her love. "I will love you for eternity!"

"I will come back for you!" were the last words she heard from Kenshin.

She did not how long she sat there, but it felt like hours, years. Her eyes were raw feeling from the never ending tears flowing down her pale face. She finally saw a crying Misao running towards her.

"Misao-chan, what are you…" before she could finish Misao had wrapped herself around Kaoru.

"I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry!" she whispered.

Kaoru knew what that meant. It hit her, that her Kenshin was gone. She began to weep harder into Misao's shoulder.

One week later…

Yahiko was walking down the hall. He was bringing his sister's food to her. Since the terrible incident, she hadn't come out of her room. You would think that a servant should be doing this chore, but she wouldn't let anyone in, except for Misao and Yahiko. Yahiko understood her pain. With losing her love, he lost one of his best friends and heroes.

He finally reached her door. He carefully held the tray with one hand while sliding the door open. She was still in the same position he had left her as. She was staring out the window. Looking at nothing in particular, just looking blankly.

Yahiko sighed. `It like she lost her soul.'

He set down the tray and went over to her. He then did something he would usually never do. He wrapped his small arms around her, giving a hug.

"Kaoru-aneue! I can't stand to see you like this! Would Kenshin want you to be like this? Do you wish to be weak?"

Kaoru turned around to look at her brother. She then smiled her first smile in a week and patted his head. Yahiko always hated to be treated like a kid, but any reaction from his sister was good.

"No, he wouldn't. He would want me to be my cheerful self as he would always say. I should keep going. Thank you, Yahiko-ototo. I needed to hear that."

Yahiko was shocked to see her mode change so. He smiled anyways. "Will that mean you'll finally eat? I will I have to get Misao-chan in here to force you from starving yourself?"

"I'll eat, only if you share it with me."

"Fine, but you eat most of it. You haven't eaten very much and that scares me. You usually gobble down food like there's no tomorrow."

She bopped him on the head before walking over to her food.

They ate in silence when they were done Yahiko picked up the tray and was about to leave before Kaoru stopped him.

"Where are you going? Will you comeback?" she asked.

"I have some other things I must attend to, but I promise I'll come back before the end of the day. I have something for you that I'll bring. If you'd like I could send Misao-chan in here for you."

"Sure, I'd like that. See you soon. And thank you for eating with me." She smiled.

Yahiko didn't understand her. `How could she be all gloomy and depressed for a whole week and then pep right back up? It's almost like she realized something, I wonder what? Maybe I'll find out when I come back.'

Yahiko had finished his sword lessons for the day and was heading back to his room to fetch the thing he was to give to Kaoru. He had to hide it, so his father wouldn't take it away. He wrapped some cloth around it and ran out to Kaoru's room. As he ran he knocked into Misao who was running in the opposite direction.

"So sorry my…oh! It's only you Yahiko-chan. For a moment I thought I'd be in real trouble there" she laughed putting her hand behind her head.

"Don't call me chan!! And why were you running? Did you see Kaoru-aneue?"

"Yes yes. She seems to be doing better. I don't know what you said to her, but it worked. She's almost like her old self again. And I was running because I forgot I had to do something important that I forgot. And I can call you chan if I want, Yahiko-chan" she added with a smirk.

"You should refer to me by Yahiko-sama!"

"Yeah whatever. Now it's my turn to ask a question. What's that you got in your hands? Something I should know about"

"It's nothing, really. Shouldn't you be getting to your work?"

"I know it's something, and I'm going to find out"

Yahiko tried to run past her, but she grabbed his arm and grabbed the object from his other hand. She pulled open the cloth and gasped.

"H-How did you get this? I thought they threw it in the fire along with his body."

"Well I saved it and am going to give it to her. So let me alone."

"Yes, I must be going. Yahiko-chan, she's lucky to have such a great brother as you." She smiled.

"Don't call me chan" he said before running off again.

When he got to her door, Yahiko saw his father standing there, looking like he was ready to break the door down.

"Kaoru! Stop being a stupid girl and come out!" he yelled.

No one replied.

"Father, she is still upset. She told me she would not speak to you again" Yahiko said, hiding the object behind his back.

"Yahiko, my son. Please talk some sense into that girl. I will not have her moping around in her room forever, refusing to speak to her own father" he asked walking away.

Yahiko sighed happily. He slowly knocked on her door. "It's me Yahiko. I got him to leave so open the door."

The door slowly slide open. He saw her peek out to see if he was right. After a minute it opened completely. She smiled as it opened. Yahiko was surprised she was still in a good mood. `Why is she suddenly like this, like nothing happened?' he thought.

"Yahiko-ototo, I'm glad you came back! Just like you promised."

"A, yeah. Kaoru, if you don't mind my asking, why are you suddenly all happy?"

She just stared for a moment. "Is that bad? Or do you want a mean sister?"

"No, I'm happy that you're happy, but earlier today, you were all depressed. Did I say something, or are you movie on?"

"Before Kenshin left, he promised he'd come back for me. What you said today made me think. You said would he want you to be like this? So I need to be my normal self so when he returns."

Yahiko hesitated. "I don't think he'll come back, Kaoru-aneue. I'm real sorry. I miss him too. He was like a brother. But he is gone; you must not let yourself believe that he'll come back."

What she did next surprised Yahiko. She turned around and smiled. "You do not know the wonders of love, just yet. I know he'll come back. I just have to what patiently."

Yahiko didn't know what to say. `I wonder if she is going insane. No one can come back from the dead, can they?'

"I must go. But I will come back tomorrow, Kaoru. Before I leave, I brought you this. It was Kenshin's; I think you should have it. I'll leave you to it." He gently placed the object on the floor before turning to leave. But before he could leave Kaoru wrapped her arms around him.

"Kaoru? I'll be back tomorrow, so don't worry."

"I know, I just wanted one last hug. Who knows what tomorrow will bring."

He took one last look at his sister's sweet face before leaving her room. As soon as he shut the door a strange feeling hit him.

`Why does it feel that this is the last time I'd see my sister? It's nothing, I bet.' He shook it off before heading to his own room.

About a minute after Yahiko had left, Kaoru went to see what it was Yahiko had left her. She picked up the heavy object and pulled off the cloth. What she saw brought tears to her eyes. It was Kenshin's sword. It looked like it had been polished and cleaned of all the blood. She did not how Yahiko had gotten this, but she thanked the gods for him.

Yahiko awoke the next morning to Misao's scream. At first he thought she had found a bug or spider so he tried to get in a few more minutes of sleep. But then he realized it had come from Kaoru's room. He quickly jumped out of bed and ran towards her room. He threw open the door to see a fear stricken Misao lend over his sister's sleeping form.

"S-She's not BREATHING!" she screamed.

"Ok, go get my dad! He'll know what to do! Hurry!" yelled Yahiko trying to stay clam.

"R-Right!" Misao sprinted out the door.

Yahiko ran over to his sister, praying it wasn't too late, but it was. Tears poured out of his eyes.

"Kaoru-aneue, wake up! Don't play games! This isn't funny! Please Kaoru!" His hands grabbed her shoulders, shaking her slightly. His hand then hit a hard object. He looked down to see Kenshin's sword in her embrace. Also her face was in a smile. He could hear the scared Misao and some other people running down the hall.

"Kaoru-aneue? I know you can hear me, though you may not be in your body. Wait for him Kaoru, Kenshin promised he'd come for you. I know he'll come for you. I hope you'll be happy…someday."

Kaoru had died. The doctors said it was that her lungs stopped working, but everyone knew it was of a broken heart. She was buried next to Kenshin, after the pleas of Yahiko. Years after her death, the house was abandoned. Every once in while people would buy the lovely home, but they wouldn't last a week. Every person that had lived there said that house was haunted by the lonely ghost of Kaoru, waiting for her love to come for her. So for a while, the haunted house was unoccupied, until the arrival of a young man with red hair, violet eyes, and an X shaped scar…

I hope you all enjoyed the first chapter of `Eternity'. I know it was a little corny, and all the characters were OOC, especially Yahiko. But he was raised in a rich and proper family, so he had to be a little more mature. (Like calling Kaoru aneue) All the chapters will not be this long. This was the introduction, so there was a lot to put in here. I will try to update as much as possible, but with school and everything, it maybe every weekend or so. (No promises)
