What Was Lost1 -For My Loved ones-

was desperately clutching the motionless woman in his arms. He yelled to her but was unheard. His eyes began to mist over as he realized the seriousness of the situation. He wasn't sure what was wrong with her, he only knew that she wasn't waking up and might never. He noticed the dirt and tares on her kimono and vaguely noted the bokken lying a small distance away. His company had now drawn closer to the scene. Megumi took a close look while Yahiko began screaming with Kenshin. Sanosuke was hovering over Kaoru's form. As the group tried to get Kaoru back to reality, she was drifting through the haze of her mind.

familiar voice called out to Kaoru. Darkness surrounded her. The voice called again and in pure desperation she began chasing it. The voice seemed so familiar. Kaoru became angry at her self for letting the memory belonging to the voice slip away. The voice was so warm and accepting. The kind of voice that you would want to hear for the rest of your life. She kept running through the dark, searching for a face or even a name to put to the voice.

"Kaoru dono." a name, but it didn't belong to the voice, no it was hers. Kaoru, that was her name. "Kaoru! Kaoru, please wake up!" That was a different voice. The voice of a boy. Also familiar.

can't I remember? I know these voices from somewhere. They mean something to me. Why can't I remember?!

stopped running as she noticed warm tears rolling down her cheeks. She felt helpless and alone. It was so dark and she had nobody to comfort her. The tear streaks widened as they became uncontrollable. Always alone. She collapsed as the need to survive began slipping away. There was no one and she was tiered of living alone. She buried her face into her arms and started to weep. "Kaoru dono! Come back to me, you have come back to me!" She stopped crying.

can't give up. I can't let all of my loved ones suffer on my behalf. I won't give up!

stood up, a new determination surging through her body. She began chasing the voices again, this time she had a reason. She ran and ran. The more she ran, the closer the voices became.

was clutching Kaoru in his arms. Yahiko, Sanosuke, and Megumi were huddled around. were all crying out, not quite sure what they could do. Kaoru's fingers twitched asher eyes fluttered open. The sobbing halted and all attention was turned towards Kaoru's face. She blinked rapidly as she adjusted her deep blue eyes to the light. "Kaoru" It was the voice from her dream. The voice that would accept her no matter what. Kenshin's grasp tightened around Kaoru as he pulled her into an embrace. Kaoru still couldn't remember this man that was holding her so passionately, so lovingly, and it tore her up inside. around her was a blur, she couldn't quite place anything. One thing was for sure, she couldn't let this man who was so worried about her, feel pain because of her. She wrapped her arms around his waist and whispered into his ear, "I came back to you." Kenshin sighed with relief as a loan tear rolled down his cheek.

three figures that had lingered in the background, now came forth. "You gave us quite a scare." Megumi stepped forth as Kenshin unwillingly eased his grip on Kaoru. "I didn't think for a second that a stubborn hag like her would die." Yahiko said with a tinge of relief mixed in with his sarcasm. Sano was quick to drive his fist into the young boy's head. "Yeah right, you were just as worried about her as the rest of us."

pounded on Yahiko's head again. Yahiko leaped on Sano's head, and the two began their accustomed fight. Kaoru remained lying on the ground. She wasn't sure what to do. These people obviously knew her, but

head began to throb with pain. Kenshin looked down at her with concern as the others began joking around with one another. He noticed a stream of blood flowing down her forehead. He ruffled her bangs so that he could get a better look at the wound. Kaoru brushed away his hand reassuring him that it was merely a scratch. She began pulling herself to her feet but before she knew it, she was falling back to the ground. Kenshin quickly swept her up into his arms, worry plaguing his face.

quickly turned towards the two, noticing Kenshin's reaction. She walked to Kaoru, Sano and Yahiko following her lead. Kaoru's pain increased as well as her frustration. She wanted to know, to remember who these people were. Kenshin looked down into her eyes, "Kaoru dono, daijoubu ka?" She couldn't control her emotions anymore. "Wakarimasen I don't know who any of you are!" Kaoru wept into Kenshin's chest as gasps escapes form mouths of all four of her audience.

came out of Kaoru's room, sliding the screen behind her. Yahiko was pacing back and forth, while Sano and Kenshin were patiently waiting for some answers. "Well? What's wrong with her?"
's eyes began to tear as he said what all of them were wondering. Megumi walked up to Kenshin as the other two crowded around them.

"She has sustained a bad blow to the head. She will recover but" Megumi struggled to maintain her composer. "But it seems that she's lost her memory." Megumi sighed and let her head drop down. There was nothing she could do to help Kaoru. Yahiko stepped forward. "But she'll get her memory back, ne?" Megumi didn't answer. Kenshin stood up and walked towards Kaoru's room. The others remained behind and watched Kenshin with heavy hearts.

opened the door and stepped into the room. He slumped next to Kaoru's futon. He stared at her, committing every detail to memory. Even now, she was beautiful.

's my fault. She got hurt because I wasn't here to protect her. Kaoru turned on her futon and was no facing Kenshin. Kenshin wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of his life with the sleeping woman in front of him. He shifted his gaze to the bandage on her forehead. His eyes narrowed and a sudden burst of anger surged through his body. His knuckles turned white as he clenched his fists, digging his fingernails into his palms. Kaoru continued to shift beneath her covers.

reached out his hand and gently caressed her cheeks as he said in a soothing voice, "There there Kaoru dono. Rest now." Kaoru turned once more then fell into a peaceful rest. Kenshin tucked the covers up around her shoulders then walked out of the room.

was dreaming, dreaming of all her loved ones. A handsome red head flashed before her. Kaoru dono, are you coming? We're going to be late. She ran to the man, but before she could wrap her arms around him, he disappeared. Kaoru stopped running.

wait! You can't leave me? Who are you? What do you mean to me? Another face flashed before her. This man was tall with spiky hair and a headband wrapped around his forehead. Jou-chan! You're making us all late! Hurry it up will ya?

ran to this man as well, but he followed his predecessor and disappeared into nothingness. Why? Why are all of you leaving? Kaoru was being taken over by her greatest fear, of being alone. This time there was two people before her. A beautiful woman with long hair and a small boy. Are you getting slow in your old age busu? His voice was light hearted. Seriously, can't you move any faster Kaoru? Ken-san and rooster head are already ahead of us. This woman spoke to Kaoru as a sister would.

I don't understand. Kaoru was at a loss. All these people were so familiar and they obviously knew her. She ran as faster as she could towards the disappearing pair. She didn't want to be alone, not like before.

stopped. Before. What had happened before. She racked her brain to remember but couldn't. She mentally kicked herself. Suddenly, Kaoru was standing in front of a restaurant. A-ka-be-ko. Yes, this place she new. Her favorite restaurant. She had gone there all the time with Kaoru kicked herself again. Who? Who did I come with? She heard a loud conversation taking place in one of the rooms behind the corner. She walked up to the group of people. Oh, there you are Kaoru dono.

redhead was addressing her with a smile across his face. Kenshin. Kaoru was startled at the name she had just muttered. Kenshin, Kenshin is his name. And he is Kaoru still couldn't remember what the redhead meant to her, but when she had said his name, it was like her heart recognized what she could not. Kaoru turned her gaze to the others sitting at the table. Sanosuke. Again a name but no memory of relationship. And that's Megumi and Yahiko. Kaoru was amazed at her sudden remembrance but also stumped as to the rest of important things.

are you just going to stand there? Come eat with us Jou-chan. Kaoru was obliged to follow the instructions of Sano. Kenshin made a place for Kaoru next to him while Megumi and Yahiko whispered something to one another. Without thinking, Kaoru began yelling at the duo. Would you stop whispering behind our backs! We're right in front of you! Then she stopped. Why had she gotten so agitated? She stared down at Kenshin with questioning eyes. He looked back up at her with those shinning violet eyes of his, wearing the same old smile. Kaoru felt relieved.

was walking around like a mindless drone. Sano and Yahiko watched with concern. "What are we going to do Sano? He's so out of it." Sano sighed audibly. "Well, I don't think there's much we can do. He blames himself for Jou-chan and the only person that could make him think other wise is Kaoru. Kuso, what a mess!"
stayed off to the side observing the situation. She walked into Kaoru's room and sat against the wall. She stared at the figure in front of her. Baka, when will you wake up? We all miss you, even me. Megumi closed her eyes and let sleep take control of her.

had followed the group of stranger's to a dojo. She recognized it as her own and a tear came to her eyes as her heart remembered an event long past that her conscience couldn't. Tadaima. She walked into the room she knew to be hers and wept. She had been talked to many times by the strangers on the way to the dojo. Each time, she could remember the stranger's names but nothing more. Kaoru sat in the dark, alone, crying, and let herself be forgotten.

fluttered her eyes open and glanced at the starry night's sky. What a beautiful night it is. She glanced at the form in front of her. This time she spoke audibly, "Why won't you wake up and look at this gorgeous sky with me?" Megumi bent over and touched Kaoru's face.

a long while, Megumi composed her self and stood up. She quietly slipped out the door, only to be confronted with the slouched figure of Kenshin. She glanced at him briefly before walking into the dinning room. Sanosuke was sitting at the table with a cup of tea resting before him. Megumi noted that he seemed to be deep in thought. She tip toed up to Sano's back. She was more than a little surprised to here her name called as she was about to pounce on the "unsuspecting" Sano.

"Just what do you think you are doing, Fox-lady?" Sano turned around and met the gaze of Megumi. "So, How are they?" Megumi took a seat next to Sano and gracefully poured a cup of tea for herself. She took a deep sip of the tea before responding to Sano, who was patiently waiting. "Well, she still hasn't woken up yet. She doesn't seem to be resting easy. Kenshin is slumped outside her room, also asleep."

she doesn't wake up soon" Megumi hesitated to finish her thought. Sano noticed as her eyes began to glaze over. "She will wake up. Soon, and then Kenshin will stop blaming himself for what happened." The two sat there in silence for the rest of the night, sipping and refilling their cups of tea.
