Never for the public…
Chapter 7 - King of Evasions
Chapter Summary - Yamamoto Tadashi and Akiha meet the Battousai… again.
This story has not been beta'd… *sings* the “I wish I had a beta” song. ;P
Summary: Kaoru's suffered a traumatic experience resulting in anxiety attacks. How does Kenshin plan to cure her? This story is based on the manga and anime up to the end of the Kyoto Arc, and ignores the Jinchuu Arc. However, sometime before this story, Kenshin does confide his past to his friends (same roundtable as in manga, different reasons irrelevant to this story)…
Note: The Japanese language is highly flexible and very beautiful. Although I do love mixing Japanese with English to try to keep the story true, I believe there is a limit which can severely decrease a story's enjoyment factor. I decided to ignore Kenshin's changes between his use of “sessha” versus “ore,” although I felt it necessary to keep “de gozaru.” Nevertheless, this story does contain MANY Japanese phrases. I've included a glossary at the end for reference. I apologize to those whom may not enjoy this story due to the intricate language mix.
The warning only applies to the first two chapters. Since the rest are “normal” chapters, I'm removing the warning and reducing the rating…

Kenshin gradually awoke to tender softness, Kaoru's scent infusing his senses. He shifted slightly, pleasure instantly shooting through his body from where they were still intimately joined. Moving tenderly within her, he relished the feel of her strong muscles constricting around him. He kissed and suckled her ear, intensifying his excitement. She slowly awakened, her body automatically responding for her. Impatient for her to open her eyes, Kenshin reached down and grabbed underneath both of her knees. He lifted Kaoru's legs up and bent her in half, tucking her stretched legs under his arms. He leaned forward to kiss her, the new position driving him even deeper, sensually rubbing his tip fully against her womb's opening. Securing his position, he gradually increased his pace until he was fiercely grinding into her womanhood, his tongue mimicking his movements inside her mouth.
Kenshin lifted his head, pleasurably watching her eyes slit-open. Feeling his end near, he flexibly maneuvered his hand between them and pinched her core. Passionately kissing Kaoru, he captured her scream of ecstasy as her muscles painfully… pleasurably… clenched around him.
“KAORU!” he roared, breaking their kiss to drench her passage with his essence. Kenshin released her legs and lowered himself on her chest, sweetly kissing and nuzzling her neck. Kaoru hugged his shoulders as he recovered, still spasmodically thrusting into her. He leaned up and swooningly kissed her, smiling when her glazed eyes opened to meet his.
“Konbanwa, Koishii,” he said, smiling contentedly.
“Konbanwa, Anata,” she smiled, glowing well-satiated.
“That was a bit impulsive,” he chuckled***.
“Hmmm, just a bit?” she teased.
“We'll take it a lot slower next time, Koishii,” he gently kissed her. She sighed happily. He pushed off her and sat up on his knees, gently slipping out of her. Kenshin held up her knees, holding her open. Kaoru watched him as he suddenly stared at her opening. Seemingly in a trance, he ran his palms down from her knees to her inner thighs, circling her skin as he continued to stare. Perplexed, Kaoru easily crunched trying to see what had his total attention. He lightly ran a finger through the trail of semen overflowing from within her. She looked on in confusion at his actions.
“Shimatta… I completely forgot,” he whispered. Kaoru lowered her legs, rose up to kneel, and embraced her arms around his shoulders.
“Doushita, Kenshin?” she asked him concerned. Kenshin hung his head in shame.
“Gomen nasai, Kaoru. I forgot to use birth control,” he sighed out sadly. Kaoru thought about it for all of one second, then smiled and hugged him happily. She moved back and cupped his face, forcing him to look at her.
“What would you like to name our little boy or girl, Anata?” she smiled. Kenshin startled, holding his breath.
“Kaoru--“ She kissed him deeply, coaxing him to return her amorous fervor. Kaoru spoke her love into his eyes, confused that he seemed to be in shock. She turned around and sat down between his knees. She wove his arms around herself and leaned back against his chest, closing her eyes. Kenshin rubbed his cheek on hers, and she felt his body tremble. Her surprise escalated as tears fell on her shoulder. She tried to turn around to him, but he held her in a vise grip, his tears falling faster.
“Kenshin! Doushita no? Please, tell me!” she asked anxiously, frightened of his possible rejection to her inevitable pregnancy...
“This is… the same way… I held Tomoe that night…” Kaoru sighed in relief and turned to him inside his arms. She leaned back, guiding him forward to sit between her legs. Then she gently laid his cheek on her shoulder and embraced him close to her. Kenshin's body shook as he fought the oncoming torrent.
“Kenshin, you never had the chance to truly grieve for Tomoe-san…” she kissed his cheek, “… let it go, Anata.” She ran her fingers through his hair, crooning to him. Emotionally overcome, he openly wept for his deceased first wife and love, his cries quickly dissolving into heart-wrenching sobs.
“Tomoe! Tomoe! Tomoe!” he cried out, bereavement ripping savagely through his small, delicate frame. Kaoru rapidly broke down into sobs with him, his grief monumentally staggering in its depth. They held each other enduringly through their anguished downpour, the slow passage of time singing its healing adagio…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After some time…
“This isn't right. I'm supposed to be taking care of you,” Kenshin whispered hoarsely, craving her closeness with his body.
“You always take all of the burdens solely on your shoulders. It's not fair. If we're to spend the rest of our lives together, you'll have to learn to let me take care of you as well,” she rasped. His throat constricted, and he looked up at her.
“If?” he asked fearfully. Kaoru sighed at his unusually distracted line of thinking.
“Let me take care of you, Anata,” she soothed his hair from his eyes and moved to stand up. She pulled him up and ushered him into the bathroom. Sitting him down on the stool, Kaoru finger-combed his hair, washing and rinsing warm water over his tired soul. Kenshin's dull eyes slowly regained light. Kaoru grabbed her soap, lathered up a washcloth and gently rubbed the jasmine scent into his upper body.
“Tomoe's favorite scent was white plum,” he said softly. She smiled at him.
“Should I buy som--?”
“NO!” he cried out, startling both of them.
“Gomen--“ he started to apologize.
“Daijoubu, Anata,” she soothed him, “Talk to me.”
“About what?” he asked exhausted.
“About anything.” He became lost in thought as she rinsed him off, then stood him up to wash his lower half.
“My name is not Kenshin.” Kaoru gasped and looked up at him.
“My birth name is Shinta,” he looked down and met her eyes.
“Shinta?” He nodded.
“I don't remember my parents anymore, what they looked like, their voices; I don't know. They were poor farmers whom died during the cholera epidemic. I was eight years old and had no other family, so my village sold me to slave traders. I was continually resold as I had always been a hard worker,” he looked down at her hands, which had stopped moving. She quickly resumed washing him.
“Around a year later, I was being transported with other slaves to some city… I'll never know which. I was the only child in the caravan. We had stopped off at a village to collect three women whom were sold off to pay debts. They instantly liked and adopted me. They were so kind to me…” Kenshin took a deep breath.
“The next night, our caravan was attacked by mountain thieves. Everyone was slaughtered, the women as well. Only the four of us were left. I picked up a katana, intent to protect Akane-san, Sakura-san, and Kasumi-san, but they grabbed me and shielded me with their bodies... and their lives. Just before I was to be killed, Hiko-shou appeared. He killed all of the bandits and told me to go to the nearby village for care. Then he left me there,” Kenshin sighed as Kaoru rinsed him off. She gently nudged him into the furo and swiftly began washing herself. He laid his chin down on his crossed arms over the furo's edge. She looked at him, patiently waiting for him to continue.
“Although I was not expecting him, Shishou returned a few days later looking for me. He found me where he had left me,” she gasped again, causing Kenshin to smile.
“You're always so concerned for me, Kaoru-Koishii,” he said smiling softly. She blushed in consternation.
“Mou! Aishiteru, Kenshin no baka!” she huffed him. His lips twitched in amusement, full color finally back in his eyes.
“During those days alone, I buried all of the corpses with my bare hands. I planted makeshift wooden crosses on all of the graves except for Akane-san's, Sakura-san's, and Kasumi-san's. For them, I used the biggest, nicest rocks I could find. Shishou was surprised when he found me and he took me in. He renamed me Kenshin and taught me the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu,” Kenshin leaned back in the furo as Kaoru joined him. He settled her between his legs, resting her back along his chest, snuggling her in his arms.
“Hmmm, Shinta, definitely not a swordsman's name,” she giggled. He chuckled.
“That's exactly what Shishou said when he renamed me,” he kissed the top of her head.
“Kaoru.”
“Nani, Keeenshiiin?” she drawled out purposefully. He tweaked her nose and she turned around, throwing her arms around him and kissing him.
“Katajikenai… for everything,” he said with the utmost sincerity.
“We both have a lot to be thankful for, Anata,” she replied. She rubbed her forehead on his, happily staring into his loving eyes.
“Ne Kenshin, when is our marriage?” she teased and he laughed merrily. She ran her hand through his hair, staring at him intently for many long seconds. He smiled wondrously, a beautiful blush overtaking his features.
“It seems you've become speechless, Anata,” she chuckled, “I'll make it easy for you… Will you make miso soup for me for the rest of my life?” He held his breath, eyes bulging at her sudden marriage proposal, and sputtered abashed.
“O-oi! That's my line, de gozaru, Kaoru!” Kaoru laughed.
“You're too slow, Anata!” she tickled his ribs.
“Mou, I've never been told that before, de gozaru,” he whined petulantly, his smile uncontainable.
“Sou ka, must be your old age?” Kenshin's eyebrows rose in amusement and he lightly pinched her butt.
“Itai!” she laughed, lightly biting his ear.
“But you didn't answer my question… either of them, come to think of it,” she winked at him, then cutely giggled.
“Hai,” he whispered. Kaoru blinked confused.
“Kenshin?” she questioned. He smiled at her.
“My answer, my Kaoru, de gozaru.” Kaoru's smile was contagious and bright enough to light the world, nearly devouring him with her impassioned kiss.
“As for your first question, I think it's more appropriate if you name our children, de gozaru, ne?” Kenshin tilted his head and teased her lips with his.
“Children? Just how many are you expecting?” she teased back.
“Hmmm, how about we focus on them one at a time, de gozaru?” he chuckled.
“Any sons of yours will of course all be strong swordsmen. Since your name is The Heart of the Sword, how about Kenji for our little boy?” she happily suggested.
“Ummm, The Path of the Sword… Himura Kenji… I like that name. But they'll be strong swordsmen because of their beautiful Shihandai mother,” he smiled charmingly, kissing her, “and if we have a little girl…?”
“Nope! I named our little boy. You have to name our little girl!” she kissed his scarred cheek…
“Saya,” he said.
“Oro? A sword's sheath?” she asked.
“Himura Saya… sounds pretty,” he smiled, “Aishiteru, Kaoru,” he gazed lovingly into her eyes.
“Aishiteru, Kenshin,” she sighed blissfully. Her eyes widened when Kenshin suddenly blinked owlishly.
“Nani, Kenshin?” she asked puzzled.
“Do I have to get one of those western engagement ring-things?” he tickled his chin thoughtfully. Kaoru laughed. He smiled and devotedly kissed the breath out of her, both of them happily enjoying the rest of their first bath session together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kaoru kneeled sideways to the dressing table in her yukata, combing her hair. She felt serene after their emotional upheaval and healing bath, desiring to savor that sensation a bit longer. Kenshin came into the room and paused, captivated by the stunning image of Kaoru softly illuminated by the candle behind her.
“It's a good thing we have more than one futon,” she giggled, “Yareyare, Kenshin, you weren't kidding when you said you “wouldn't make the same mistake again during your next marriage”… You didn't even wait for the next marriage to happen yet!” Kaoru tittered taunting him.
“Orooooo,” Kenshin flushed in embarrassment and smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. He bent down to replace their soiled futon with the double-sized one. He then walked up behind her. Kenshin pulled her hair to her back and loosely braided it. He placed his hands on her shoulders, rubbing them gently. Kaoru laid down her comb on the table, and interlaced her fingers with his. She leaned back and looked up at his smiling face. He squeezed her hands and walked over to the futon, tucking himself in and turning up the cover for Kaoru.
She blushed, taking a deep breath and walked over to the futon, kneeling beside it. Kenshin contented himself by leaning propped up on his side, relaxing his cheek on his hand. Kaoru scooted over onto the futon, sitting and hugging her knees. Kenshin chuckled; although this seemed like a game to him, he patiently waited for Kaoru to overcome her shyness.
“Mou, you're such a brat sometimes!” Kaoru exclaimed through clenched teeth. Kenshin enjoyably laughed out loud. She looked him over, realizing his hair had only been finger-combed. Huffing at him, she stood and went to retrieve her comb. He watched her curiously.
“Sit up, Kenshin!” Kaoru commanded, kneeling behind him as he obeyed. Kaoru ran her fingers through his hair a few more times. Kenshin sat quietly, blissfully basking in her attentions. She carefully pulled the comb through his hair until not a single knot remained. Even then she still combed, delighting her fingers in the feel of his feathery, silk strands. Kenshin broke her reverie as he tenderly extracted the comb and got up to set it back on the table.
He returned and pulled Kaoru up to stand, walking them back on top of the futon. Kaoru watched as he kneeled, looking up at her. She ran her hand through his bangs, her blush returning. Kenshin lay down on his back while Kaoru sat down again. She leaned to the side, loving how his hair splayed out around his pillow. Kenshin opened his arms and Kaoru willingly tumbled to his side. They laughed together, hugging each other closely.
“Ne Kenshin?”
“Hmmm?”
“When is our marriage?” she taunted mischievously. He pulled her closer to his chest and tucked the blankets in around them.
“Shall we wait for the sakura to bloom?” he asked taunting her.
“Mou, that's half a year from now… I don't think I can wait that long,” she replied jokingly.
“Hmmm, what a dilemma… guess we'll have to sleep on it, de gozaru!” Kaoru laughed.
“I think I'll dub you the King of Evasions!” she teased.
“Mou, that's not nice, Koishii!” Kenshin laughed. Kaoru cuddled further into Kenshin's chest, forcing him turn from his side to his back. He wrapped his arms around her as she hugged his waist.
“Oyasuminasai, Anata,” Kaoru purred. Kenshin blushed, then cuddled her closer.
“Oyasuminasai, Koishii.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kenshin laughed at Kaoru's childish shenanigans. She had picked another strawberry, dusted it off, and plopped it cheerily into her mouth.
“Koishii, you need to wash those before eating them,” he playfully scolded her.
“But Kenshin, they taste so good!” she blushed and giggled.
“Kenshin-san?” Kenshin and Kaoru turned around to see a man and woman, both slightly older than Kaoru.
“Ohayo, de gozaru,” Kenshin greeted.
“It IS you, Kenshin-san! You haven't changed a bit in thirteen years!” The woman smiled.
“Sou ka, de gozaru? Might you be Akiha-chan, de gozaru?” Kenshin smiled.
“Hai!” Kenshin turned to the gentleman beside her.
“Tadashi-chan?”
“Ohayo, Kenshin-san! I'm glad to see you're well,” Tadashi greeted.
“Domo Arigatou. Please allow me to introduce Kamiya Kaoru. Kaoru, this is Yamamoto Tadashi and Akiha.”
“It's my pleasure to make your acquaintances,” Kaoru bowed and greeted formally, Tadashi and Akiha followed suit.
“We have some tea and cakes inside, would you like to come in?” Kenshin invited.
“We would be honored, Kenshin-san,” Tadashi replied.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Kaishou and Junsaku live and work in Kyoto. They're both married as well with children,” Tadashi said.
“Ooooh! So, the three troublemakers are now separated?” Kenshin joked. Tadashi and Akiha laughed.
“No more play-sword-fighting for them,” Akiha teased, “Besides, we've been busy preparing for our newest family member,” she said, rubbing her stomach affectionately. Kaoru smiled excitedly.
“You're expecting? When are you due?” she asked eagerly.
“About seven and a half months or so,” Akiha answered. Kenshin and Tadashi smiled.
“What brings you two to visit?” Kenshin asked.
“Kenshin-san, we're grateful for everything you've done for us all of these years. We wanted to thank you in person for employing us to take care of your home and garden, and allowing us to use the garden as our own for all of this time.”
“Dou itashimashite, but if anything, I'm the one who's in debt to both of you. I'm sorry for the burden,” Kenshin replied.
“No, no, Kenshin-san! With your generous salary, we've lived very happily these past ten years since our marriage. Domo arigatou gozaimasu!” Akiha said as she and Tadashi formally bowed. Kaoru looked at Kenshin, her shock evident. She quickly composed herself as the other couple rose to sit straight.
“So then, how did you both meet Kenshin?” Kaoru asked from behind her teacup.
“We were children when Kenshin-san and Tomoe-san moved in. Kenshin-san would play with us when he wasn't working selling medicine or gardening. We helped out with the garden back then too.”
“Playing with children even then, Kenshin?...” Kaoru winked at his blush, “… You sold medicine?”
“Ano… I picked herbs and made medicine to sell at the local villages. While I was away, the children would keep Tomoe company and help her around the house,” Kenshin said.
“Oro? No wonder you know so much about medicine, Kenshin?!” Kaoru exclaimed.
“Ah, well actually, I learned all about medicine in the, uuuuh, uuum in Kyoto,” Kenshin explained smiling sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head.
“So it's true then…” Tadashi said quietly. They all turned to look at him.
“A man with red hair… cross-shaped scar on his left cheek… which was not crossed until that final day we played with you… Kenshin-san, you really are the Hitokiri Battousai?” Tadashi asked. Kenshin and Kaoru gasped surprised. Kenshin eyes saddened and he looked down at his tea.
“It's amazing that it's true… Kenshin-san, do you remember what my parents had said back then?” Akiha asked.
“Ano, gomen...” Kenshin looked up frowning.
“My mother said that you look out for everyone, so that makes you a good person, but my father said that there was something strange about you, so I shouldn't play with you… I think back on those times. It didn't seem like you would, or could, harm a fly…” she giggled, “you always used to let Tadashi, Kaishou, and Junsaku beat up on you. It was hilarious to watch…”
“In my heart, I still cannot believe that you were a hitokiri at all… not just a hitokiri, but the Battousai…” Akiha whispered, “… to think of all those days we played with you, not knowing the danger lurking behind your kind smiles… but then, I look into your eyes…” she smiled brightly at Kenshin.
“It's like I said before, you haven't changed at all in thirteen years, Kenshin-san!” she exclaimed delightfully. Confusion overtook Kenshin.
“You're still the same gentle, considerate man we met all those years ago… I'm so glad you never changed,” Akiha admired immeasurably. Kenshin's eyes shined too brightly, and he looked down at his teacup in his lap. Kaoru beamed gratefully at Akiha.
“So, when are you two getting married?” Tadashi asked tactfully changing the subject. Kenshin coughed, failing to stealthily wipe away his tears of happiness. Kaoru laughed and purposefully drew attention away from him.
“Oro? I take it he was as passive then as he is now? It seems the King of Evasions has to answer now, doesn't he?” Kaoru joked mercilessly, elbowing him lightly in the ribs. Kenshin sweat-dropped.
“Kaoru…” he pleaded for mercy.
“How about when you tried to lift those two bales of rice Toramaru handed to you? Battousai's strength didn't help you out from under that weight! Next thing we knew, you were lying flat on your back all swirly-eyed!!!” Kenshin blushed brilliantly as Kaoru laughed relentlessly, sounding an awful lot like a certain kitsune...
“Mou Kaoru!!!” he begged pitifully.
“Hai, hai…” she sipped her tea smirking widely. Tadashi and Akiha laughed at their playful bickering.
“However, our marriage celebration will be back at home in Tokyo,” Kenshin blushed, smiling shyly as he swiftly changed the subject.
“We would love to attend,” Akiha piped in.
“Certainly! We'll invite you both!” Kaoru approved excitedly.
“So then, Kenshin-san, would you like us to continue taking care of this house?” Tadashi asked. Kenshin looked to Kaoru.
“It does make for a nice vacation get-away, don't you think, Kenshin?” she winked and smiled alluringly. Kenshin smiled blushing and turned back to Tadashi, formally bowing with Kaoru copying him.
“Hai, I would greatly appreciate your continued care of this house and grounds in my absence,” Kenshin replied, then rose and stood up with Kaoru. Tadashi and Akiha bowed and rose. The two couples exited the house and walked down the road a bit.
“Thank you for visiting us! Kenshin has your address, so we'll send the invitations once the party's date is set,” Kaoru called out.
“Thank you for having us!” Akiha waved as they walked away, hand-in-hand. Kaoru turned to see Kenshin holding out his hand to her.
“Shall we continue gardening, Koishii?” he hummed to her. Kaoru blushed, took his hand and followed him back to the garden.
