[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Disclaimer: I don't own Rurouni Kenshin or its characters.

Author's Notes: I hope you like this fan fiction story! It probably stinks, but oh well, I'll give it a try? Also this is not the exact story on what happened to Kaoru's parents, so don't blame me for it! It's for the story plot! So, don't forget to review! Sayonara!

Chapter 1: Something seems fishy about. . . . .

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

(In the Kamiya Dojo)

Kaoru is in her room sitting up peering into the unknown.

`That day, it is so close. I must not think about it, or else I'll break my promise.' She got back into her futon and went back to sleep for another several hours.

Several hours later, Kaoru got up yawning. Then she took off her yukata and changed into her kimono, which was light blue with silver sakuras and a sakura tree on it. She also wore a pink obi with a matching pink ribbon.

She thought she looked presentable enough, so she walked out of her room and closed the shoji.

Kenshin, of course was already up doing the laundry. “Ohayou gozaimasu, Kaoru-dono.” he smiled his famous rurouni grin at her and awaited her response. When he heard none, he immediately became worried, “Daijabou Kaoru-dono?”

Kaoru closed her eyes, bent her head, opened her eyes and rubbed her left arm. “Hai, daijabou.” came the meek reply.

Kaoru was too distracted to notice that Kenshin got up from the laundry and stood right next to her, trying to sense what she was feeling. A hand on her shoulder woke her up from her reverie. She turned to find that she was peering into concerning violet eyes.

“Kaoru-dono is there is something wrong?” questioned the worried rurouni.

Kenshin tilted his head so he could get a better look at her. `Nothing seems wrong, Sessha should better go check.' “Daijabou, Kaoru-dono? If there is anything that's bothering you, you can always talk about it with this one?” he tried to make her feel like she open up to him about anything.

“Hai.” came the abnormally cheerless response.

After that Kaoru walked way heading towards the koi pond.

`Kaoru-dono is not in her normal cheerful condition. Sessha wonders what is going on, but Sessha shall get to the bottom of it immediately, but after the laundry, then preparing the breakfast, then going to the market to buy more food for lunch, then Sessha will be able to figure out Kaoru-dono's distress.

::Sigh:: `Why am I so disturbed? I haven't been this disturbed since it first happened. But why? If I worry too much I'll catch the others' attention.'::Sigh::

Tp, tp, tp. ::Swoosh:: swayed the wind.

“Huh?” Kaoru exclaimed. She swiftly turned around.

After she saw the familiar figure, her frightened feeling turned into an angry one. “Kenshin don't sneak up on me like that!” she shouted practically to all of Japan's population.

“ORO?” he put on his infamous rurouni grin. “Gomen nasai Kaoru-dono for disturbing your train of thought, but this one thought that maybe we can talk?”

Kaoru was extremely surprised but agreed anyway.

A brief moment of silence passed between them, before Kaoru decided to break the ice.

Kaoru did not look directly into his eyes when she spoke, “Kenshin, have you ever had that feeling when,” she paused as she started to tremble, “you feel like you can't keep a promise you made long ago to a dear loved one?” she felt like she was about to crumble to a million pieces.

`Kaoru-dono feels like she is going to break a promise? To whom I wonder?' Kenshin smiled and patted her on the back, “Hai, many times. And if you truly couldn't keep your promise that you tried to keep for so long, Sessha would think this loved one would understand if it suffered you so much.” he whispered.

Kaoru was on the verge of crying, but some how managed to keep it all inside. `I mustn't cry. Don't cry. Don't cry. Remember no tears!' That motivation was what helped her stay so strong during the time she lived alone.

“But, isn't a promise a promise?” she whispered almost angrily.

Kenshin shielded his eyes from view with his scarlet bangs. “True, a promise is a promise.” came the emotionless reply.

`That voice? What could have triggered it? Me? Something I said? Well duh!' Kaoru put her hand on his, and squeezed it, to get the reassurance she needed, to know if he was alright.

Kenshin slowly looked up. He directed his view to her face, then to her beautiful sapphire hued eyes. Kenshin's hand still remained stiff and did not squeeze back.

Kaoru fidgeted in the deafening silence. `Wow, look at the peaceful looking koi, so open-minded and carefree. Wait? Did I just think what I thought I think? Oh forget it!'

::Sigh::, ::sigh::, sulk, ::sigh::, ::swoosh:: went the wind, ::sigh::, “Arrgh!” Kaoru twitched her left eye several times. `I can't take it anymore! Kenshin enough with the mind games! I'm going insane!' (A.N: Weren't you already?)

Kenshin looked at her with a partially worried, terrified, and amused gaze. He raised his left eyebrow. `What's up with Kaoru-dono? Is she finally going to snap and tell me what's going on?' He smirked at her.

She turned to glance at Kenshin, and saw him smirking! Kenshin=smirking, I don't think so!

Author's Notes: SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? Is it good? Should I continue? So, I hope you like it! Review! If I get a review or something, I may update!
