REINCARNATED

They were in the store looking for a gift when HE finally showed up.

"Aoshi, your predictability is truly sad."

Actually, Father, I was hoping to see you." He turned around slowly to face his father.

"Where is Kaoru?"

"Safe and happy; for now."

"Hmmm. What do you really know of Mr. Hiko?"

"I know he makes Kaoru happy. And he's not with Tomoe anymore if that's what you're insinuating."

Saito frowned. "He told you this and you believed him?"

"Yes, Father, because I saw him with Tomoe and I've seen him with Kaoru. I've never see two people so much in love in my life. Being with him makes her glow from in here." He pointed to his heart.

"But you wouldn't know about that."

Saito's eyes narrowed. "I want my daughter home by this afternoon."

"And people in hell want ice water. Misao, did my sister say what she wanted?"

"Yeah, a car."

Aoshi groaned. "Well, I can't help her there---wait! I know!" He turned away from his father.

"Where is she?!" He asked again. Aoshi was getting angry now; this was beyond parental concern. This was obsessive, possessive behavior. Kaoru was an independent person, why couldn't he see that?

"Her string is tied to him, Father, and his to her. I'm pretty sure this isn't the first life time they've been together. You can try, but NOTHING and I truly mean nothing you will do will destroy that. They'll just pick another century when you're not around to harangue them."

Aoshi walked away without looking back, his arm around Misao.

Saito had no way of knowing for sure if Kaoru was still in Seijuro Hiko's home or if they had taken her elsewhere. Aoshi and Misao were at the register paying now. He followed them back to Hiko's house, then has someone stationed there to make sure they didn't leave.

Hiko came out in the afternoon, was gone about four hours and returned, his car loaded with stuff. Saito was in his office when he got the call from the tail informing him of this. It didn't make sense. Maybe he'd been grocery shopping, but being gone for four hours? It seemed unlikely.

Still unsure what to make of the news he'd received, Saito returned home. On first blush, everything looked okay, but then he got upstairs. Aoshi's room was in complete disarray; his clothes were gone, as were several books, his kodachies and a framed picture of Aoshi and his mother and sister.

Saito had always refused to sit for family pictures and after a few years, Tokiwo had stopped asking him to participate. She had barely managed to get him in one place long enough for their wedding picture.

Kaoru's room was much worse that Aoshi's. Posters were ripped off the walls, all the stuffed animals were gone, her clothes and the ones Misao kept for impromptu overnights---gone. Her katana---gone. Her copy of the family picture was also missing, but the empty frame was left standing on the bedside table. The carpet had been pulled back and a floor board ripped up and he noted with amusement that she had made a secret place in the floor to stash the thing she didn't want found. This too was empty save for something shiny. He picked it up; an MP3 disk.

In his room, Saito carefully placed the disk into the player. It had music snippets on it.

"I don't think you trust . . . in . . . my . . . self-righteous suicide . . .

Father why have you forsaken me? . . . in your heart forsaken me---"

He scanned to the next track.

"But you weren't there, right when I need you the most---"

Next track.

"Runaway train never going back,

Wrong way on a one way track---"

Next track.

"Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep---"

He stabbed the button with enough force to shake the player, ejecting the small disk and snapped it in half. They weren't coming back.

"AHHH! Aoshi, put me down!" Kaoru pounded on her brother's shoulder as he spun her around the living room, but she was laughing. They'd been living in New York for nearly three months and Aoshi had never seen his sister so content. She and Kenshin had gotten married almost as soon as the plain hit the tarmac, and to add to their joy, they had just found out she was pregnant.

"Gee, Uncle Aoshi --- I like the sound of that." He righted her and set her on the floor.

"Well, if you like that, how does `Daddy' sit with you?" Misao asked as Kaoru escaped into her new husband's arms.

"Nani!?" After ten years, it was still hard to remember to speak English all the time.

"Be---leave it baby!"

"Hiko, did . . . you . . . know . . . about this?"

"Innocent of all charges," Kenshin assured his brother-in-law, pulling Kaoru into his lap. "I'm just as shocked as you."

Aoshi dropped heavily into one of Kenshin's Lay-Z-Boy recliners.

"Well!" Kaoru was still giggling. " This is very merry! Misao, think, we can send them both to the store at 5 AM for pickled onions and iced coffee!"

They both laughed and Aoshi looked ill. "Hang on, I'm still absorbing." He put his hands over his eyes. "Well, Makimachi, I guess we have to get married now."

"Oh, the romance, what girl could resist?" Kaoru dead paned. Aoshi glared at her while Misao giggled some more. He stood and held out his had to the shorter girl.

"Makimachi, come with me." They went out and Kaoru took the opportunity to kiss Kenshin.

"Do you think we'll have a boy first this time?"

"Well, we've only got two choices . . .so . . ."

She laughed and hugged him. "Oh, before I forget, Aoshi's kodachies came in the mail today and so did my katana."

"Good; I'm sure Aoshi was pleased. Were they bent?"

"He is, and no, the post office took good care of them." Something thumped in the next room and they could hear Misao giggling through the wall.

"Oh, Aoshi!"

Kaoru put her hands over her ears. "EW!"

Kenshin smiled and kissed her nose. "They'll get married soon and our children will grow up happily together."

She leaned over and put her head against his chest. "Only if my father stays out of it."

"Let's not bring him in here, okay? We'll be fine. I'll never let him harm you or our babies."

Aoshi came back, Misao smiling and skipping along beside him. The rock on her hand looked like it was wearing her.

"Kenshin, looks like we're going skatin'!"

"Kaoru!" Mesao looked down at her ring. "He said it's temporary; he wants the wedding ring to be bigger." She lowered her lashes and blushed cutely.

Aoshi blushed slightly and Kenshin and Kaoru laughed out loud.
