Rurouni Kenshin Fan Fiction ❯ Sei Shi ❯ chapter one ( Chapter 1 )

The moon shone brightly in the clear night sky, the stars twinkling alongside the large pale sphere. It was quiet only the faint sound of a dull wind could be heard whispering through the trees. It was disturbed when three loud gunshots split through the night air.

"Dam it Misao I thought you said there was only going to be two there!" shouted Kaoru as she ran through the underbrush firing off two more shots behind her.

"It's not my fault the informant was wrong! Besides we got what we came for so what's the big deal?"

Misao skidded to a halt throwing her kunai at the large figure looming over her; they pierced through its skin making it howl out in pain.

"This way!" she shouted as she grabbed Kaoru's hand and pulled her to the left, weaving in and out of trees.

Kaoru wasn't sure how much longer they would last because she was running out of ammo and she was sure Misao was too. Dropping her clip and replacing it with another one she whipped around and shot off three rounds before running to catch up with Misao.

"We need to get out of here, Now Misao!" she shouted between gunfire

"Really you think so?"

Misao could feel her normal perky personality slipping away being replaced by fear and anger. She was tired, hungry, and smelly, pissed that they were tricked and she had just led them to a dead end.

"SHIT!" she yelled

"Misao!"

The young girl turned around to find a pair of red eyes staring at her. Taking a step back she bumped in to Kaoru who was trying to keep the enemy at bay.

"Misao what are you doing? Move!"

"Kaoru." She whispered afraid to speak any louder for fear it would attack her.

Kaoru chanced a peak behind her to see what was wrong; she blanched when she saw a large white wolf with glowing red eyes staring at them.

"DAM IT ALL!" she screamed as she shot off two more rounds, hitting one while just barely missing the other one.

The wolf took in their appearance and the situation, two young women with weapons and a pack of hungry werewolves. The wolf flattened its ears when the raven-haired girl screamed, which was followed by a couple shots being fired off.

Kaoru did not like how this night was turning out and they way which it was going she was very doubtful it would turn out to be good. She fired off the last remaining rounds and discarded the case; reaching for another one she cursed when she felt none left.

"Misao do you have anything left?"

"I only have one kunai, you?"

"Only my knife and I really don't like up close and personally with these things."

They could feel the wolves closing in on them their soft growls mixing with the wind, making the two unable to distinguish where they were.

"Its our only choice you know." Said Misao

“Yeah I know, but I don't have to like it." Kaoru hissed as she reached for the knife stashed in her boot.

Seeing an opening one of the wolves leapt forward lunging for her but before he could tear her to shreds a white blur streaked passed Kaoru and Misao and talked the wolf.

It ripped away at its neck tearing the soft flesh from its body before snapping its head off and turning its burning gaze on the others hiding in the trees, slowly the eye disappeared into the night leaving the two girls alone.

"What just happened?" Misao asked

"I'm not sure but I think they left."

A soft growl alerted the two to the white wolf standing a foot away from them.

“Well not all of them. Just back up slowly and try not to look directly at It.," whispered Kaoru as she took a few steps back

"Sure no problem." Said Misao as she rolled her eyes

No sooner had they stepped back then the wolf stepped forward its head up and cocked to the side. The two girls stopped and waited but nothing came.

"Ok this is getting weird. Why isn't it attacking?" asked Misao

"Do you want it too!" hissed Kaoru as she shot her partner a look of disbelief

"No but its just standing there staring at us. If it going to attack I wish it would hurry up."

The creature took another step towards them before shaking its fur. The two watched as it morphed into a young girl. She stood up slowly her hair hanging around her face covering her eyes, eyes that were still locked on to them.

"Wow." Whispered Misao

She had never seen one change like that. Kaoru however was on edge because who ever this was they were not your average run of the mill werewolf and she was out of bullets.

"You really shouldn't go into a den full of werewolves on a full moon that's just suicide."

Kaoru shot Misao an angry look before turning back to the girl before them.

"Come on I know a short cut out of these woods." Said the girl

"Why should we trust you?" asked Kaoru still holding her knife

"Do you have a choice? Besides why would I want to hurt you?"

"So you can eat us, that's why!" shouted Misao

The girl just laughed and shook her head before walking past the two.

"Sorry to disappoint you but I have no taste for human flesh."

The two just stood there looking at each other and the girl's retreating form warily.

"Are you coming?"

Misao shrugged and took off after her with Kaoru not far behind. They reached the outside with in twenty minutes and were happy to see the city lights only a few yards away from where they were standing.

"Thank you," Said Misao

The girl just smiled at the two before turning to walk back into the forest.

"Wait!" yelled Kaoru

The girl stopped and turned back towards the two young women.

"You can't go back in there what if they attack you?"

"Then I'll deal with it. My problem now not yours."

"You can't because we haven't repaid you for helping us." Said Misao

"She's right so you'll come with us."

"How is that repaying me?"

"Who knows but your still coming with us?" Misao said as she grabbed the girl's hand and pulled her towards the city.

They reached the city in three hours and then made it to headquarters in one, all the time with the girl behind them. They walked down a narrow ally way where they took a flight of stairs down to a metal door.

Kaoru pulled out her I.D. card and swiped it causing the door to click and slide open.

"After you my lady." She said as she gave a mock bow to Misao

"Why thank you my dear. Beauty before age you know." She said as she raced through the door with a growling Kaoru behind her.

They were still messing around when someone interrupted them.

"Hey ugly the boss wants to speak to you."

"What did you say kid?" she growled out at the young boy

"I am not a kid ugly!" he shouted before storming off

Misao plopped down at her desk sinking into the hard wood chair like it was heaven.

"So what's your name? Mines Misao and that's Kaoru my partner."

The girl just looked at her for a moment before smiling sheepishly and scratching her head.

"Can't tell you that."

"Why not?" asked Kaoru as she peered around her computer

The girl grinned again and looked up at the ceiling as she rocked back and forth on her heels.

"Um…hard to explain."

Kaoru was just about to ask again when a cold voice form behind her spoke startling her enough to make her jump. She heard Misao giggle and when she turned she saw it was Aoshi.

"Don't sneak up on people like that!"

"Awe what's the matter Kaoru did Aoshi scare you?" questioned Misao as she tried not to laugh

Kaoru glared at her before turning it on the man behind her.

"What?"

He gave her one of his looks that said ` you really have to ask'. Kaoru groaned not really wanting to talk to her boss right at this particular moment. She got up with a groan and began to make her way towards his office.

"Misao you coming?" she called over her shoulder

Misao however had made her way over to Aoshi and was grinning up at him evilly her jade eyes sparkling with mischief. He just looked at her his ice blue eyes dancing with amusement.

"Nope he only asked for you Kaoru!" she shouted back as her hand reached behind her.

Kaoru heard a thrawp followed by laughter as she knocked on her boss's door.

"Enter." Came the cold reply

She opened the door and walked in sitting down in one of the chairs before his desk. She waited somewhat patiently as he finished typing on the computer and shuffling through papers.

"Report." He asked without even looking at her.

"We were set up; the informant's info was false. We did manage to get the item thought."

She reached in her pants pocket and pulled out the black satchel and tossed it to him. He caught it with out looking his gaze still transfixed on the computer screen.

"Problems?"

"None except we ran into more trouble than expected but we made it out with out a scratch. We also might need a new informant."

She waited for him to say anything but when nothing came she stood up and went to the door to leave.

"So why did you feel the need to bring one of them here."

Kaoru cringed before slowly turning around to face a pair of golden eyes. She knew she was fidgeting she always did when she was nervous or trying to lie.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Really?"

He stood up his eyes never leaving hers as he walked towards the door and flung it open. He leaned up against the door jam and lit a cigarette, taking a drag he glanced over to where Misao was laughing hysterically at a dust covered Aoshi.

"Then what is that." he asked staring at the young girl sitting down watching the pair goof off.

If playing dumb doesn't work remember you can always lie and hope it's believable.

"Her, she's Misao's cousin from Kyoto. She came to visit, didn't she tell you?"

He took another drag his gaze darting to her before pushing back off the wall and going back into his office and shutting the door.

Kaoru let out the breath she was holding and walked back towards her partner.

"Are you done yet or do you still want to torcher him?" Kaoru asked as she flopped in her chair. She jumped right back out when she felt another body under hers.

"Jumpy aren't we?"

Kaoru whipped around to see a pair of amused violet eyes gazing at her.

"Kenshin don't do that!"

"Do what Kaoru?" he asked putting on his most innocent smile

Misao giggled behind her before she squealed. Turning around she saw Misao was now covered in the white dust herself and a slight frown on her face.

"That wasn't very nice Aoshi." She said as she folded her arms and pouted

"Kaoru may I ask who your friend is?" said Kenshin looking at the young girl behind them

Kaoru turned around and looked at her not wanting to look at Kenshin, she never could lie to him.

"She's Misao's cousin that's visiting from Kyoto."

"I didn't know she had a cousin, did you Aoshi?"

He just gazed at Misao who looked away and moved towards Kaoru.

"She's only staying for a little visit. She's a very distant cousin on my dad's side."

The two men looked at the women across from them who wouldn't meet their gaze then at the young girl.

"Well it's nice to meet you…"

Kenshin noticed the girl looked a little wary and confused. He was going to say more when Misao chirped in.

"Midori."

The young girl glanced at Misao then back at Kenshin before bowing slightly.

"Midori this is Kenshin Himura and Aoshi Shinamori. They work in division A."

"It is nice to meet you." Said Midori

Kenshin bowed slightly and Aoshi just inclined his head.

"Well we better get going. Don't want to bore her with anymore of this stuff." Said Kaoru as she grabbed the young girls hand and pulled her away from the two men.

Misao flopped down on the couch a happy sigh escaping her lips as her weary bones melted into the cushions.

"Heaven."

Midori laughed at the younger girl before turning her attention to Kaoru. She was drying her hair.

"You can use the shower if you want." Kaoru said

"I don't' have any clothes to change into."

"You can borrow some of ours." Said Misao as she sunk further into the couch

"You don't mind?"

"Nope."

Midori got up and walked into the bathroom, she was very happy to have a shower she hadn't had one in weeks. The warm water and shampoo was sinfully wonderful as she cleaned off. When she stepped out, she dried off and wrapped the towel around her and walked out the door.

"Here you can wear these." Said Kaoru as she handed her a pair of faded jeans, a white shirt, and green hoodie.

When everyone was dressed and settled in, they had to decide what to eat. It took awhile but they decided on burgers. While they waited for the food to arrive Kaoru worked on their paper work and Misao lounged on the couch with Midori watching a late night movie.

"What were you doing out there anyway?" Misao asked as she flipped through the channels

"I am looking for someone."

"Who maybe we can help?" asked Kaoru

“I am looking Loki, the black wolf with golden eyes."

Kaoru chocked on her drink and tired to regain her breath, as Misao patted her back.

"Why do you want that one?!"

"He is the only one who can stop the resurrection of the two demon gods."

That caught the girl's attentions, Kaoru stopped coughing, and Misao stopped in mid pat.

“Resurrection?"

"Shit I knew something was going on tonight should have been a clue."

"Kaoru we have to tell Saitou, he's not going to like this."

"I know but how are we going to tell him with out giving her away. I already lied once to him tonight and to Kenshin I don't think I can do it again."

Kaoru groaned and slumped in her seat her head hitting the table slightly. Misao sat there for a moment trying to think but wasn't getting anything.

"I could always go in my other form, they would not know me."

"That's brilliant we could bring you in as a witness or something and you can tell them with out actually showing them who you are." Said Misao as she jumped up from her chair knocking it backwards.

"That's great and all but do you speak wolf because I don't."

"Oh yeah I forgot about that."

The two slumped back in their seats looking a little dejected by that news.

"I can always speak to him telepathically."

"Ooo you can do that?" said Misao leaning over the table to stare at her.

Midori shook her head yes just as Kaoru jumped up and pulled the two out the door.

"We just have to stick with the story and try not to give yourself away Kaoru."

"Hurry up and change Midori." Whispered Kaoru and she glanced to see if anyone was around.

Midori stopped walking and crouched down shaking her head slightly as she slowly morphed into her wolf form.

/Ok I'm ready/

"Let's go."
