MIZUNO HOSPITAL – Planet: Moon – Year: 4800
It was a beautiful day outside and he could smell the scent of all the freshly bloomed flowers on the warm breeze.
“It’s beautiful…isn’t it Mamo-chan?” followed by a feeble intake of breath, “So alive.”
The faint whispers instantly broke his heart once again. It had felt that way to him many times in recent days. Every time he heard that voice, a voice that no longer sounded like the woman he loved, the ache in his heart grew stronger. It was all he could do to keep himself from weeping. She had been sick a week previous to the birth of their second child and now she was fading away right in front of him and he knew that this time he could do nothing about it. Sadly no one else could either.
“Yes,” he replied faking a smile as best he could, “…almost as beautiful as you.”
He had loved this one woman for two lifetimes and in this one for almost 3,000 years. To him her beauty had never waned. Even as she lay dying she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
“Those roses are by far the prettiest I’ve ever seen.” She forced a smile and it made him sick with guilt, though that wasn’t the intention, to see it. “You should plant more…in the garden.”
She took another breath and it seemed like it was difficult for her. Her struggling just to breath normally made him feel weak and useless. He want to hear her laugh and watch her running around again. Every time he closed his eyes he invisioned the woman he knew: Clumsy, air headed, and hyper. Or the Queen that everyone else saw when she put on her, "I'm a big girl now act" as Minako had called it. Then he'd open them and see her as she was and he couldn't take it.
“You know I love the red ones…the most…” a pause, he knew she was having trouble, “…I’d like to see them just as beautiful next year.”
She was lying for his benefit. He knew she wouldn’t last one more day let alone another year. Everyone knew it, even her.
"Yeah," he said holding back the tears, "We'll have to plant them together then."
Her breathing started to sound more labored and she tried to cover it up by breathing slower, but Mamoru could tell. He knew this was the end.
"Mamo-chan..." she whispered, "I love you."
Her tone was sadder than he'd ever heard it and her voice was only barely audible. She was in pain, but she still smiled. She was always trying to comfort others and hide her own pain. This would be the last time she had to pretend to be okay...it would be the last time she did anything. Mamoru knew he shouldn't be thinking like that, but he couldn't help it. He knew he'd remember her smiling face in that moment for the rest of his life. He knew every time he thought of her it would be this moment. He was dying to even though he would continue to breath long after she stopped.
“Hold my hand, Mamo-chan.” another grin, but less forced this time, “Lets watch the sunrise together one more time.”
She held out her frail looking hand and he clasped it in his own. She had always feared being alone. At least he could grant her the one thing she cherished most in her final moments...love and company.
