Prologue
Retrospect
Everything that had occurred in recent months replayed in Serena's mind, like a movie without a remote control. There was no way to stop what would constantly flash before her eyes. It started out as a once-in-a-while thing, but in the past two weeks or so it seemed to be an everyday reminder.
Haunting her thoughts, consuming her dreams, and disrupting her everyday life. The pain she hid felt interminable and the number of times she would indulge in the memories of past events was innumerable, but not that anyone would notice. The havoc those memories caused were well hidden behind false laughter and painted on smiles.
The world completely oblivious to her charade, life was easier that way. Serena didn't want anybody's pity, especially if they faked it to “be nice”. It wasn't her fault but she had to deal with the consequences of her actions. One little favor that had been blown out of proportion by the unknowing world. Serena's helping out caused the entire outside world to get the wrong impression.
People would shake their heads in disgust, disproval, and shame all because of Serena's good intentions. They, unaware of how simple of a task it could've been if everyone would've minded their own business. Yeah like that was ever going to happen, she mused to herself. Looking back on more enjoyable moments from her past, Serena smiled briefly. Life seemed much more carefree and manageable, compared to life now. Now my life seemed void and meaningless.
