Chapter 3
Yuuichirou is Found. Mars' Power is Shining.
Rei walked quietly back to the University, her face streaked with tears and her thoughts in a turmoil. Maybe he didn't care for me like I thought he did. Rei thought, starting to sniffle again. Or maybe, a harsher thought interjected, he got tired of waiting. Mars was so preoccupied that she didn't look up to see that she was coming up to an intersection. As she continued her rambling walk, miserably wrapped up in her own thoughts, she felt an arm around her midsection and the air was knocked out of her as she felt on top of a tall, undeniably male person. Rei groaned and rolled off the man and got up, ready to thank him when she saw who it was. “Yuu…Yuuichirou?” He groaned in response and Rei flushed guiltily. “What were you thinking?” she snapped, falling back on old habits.
“That I didn't want you to die,” he wheezed in response.
Flashback
Yuuichirou was sitting on his futon at the shrine when he heard Ojii-cha welcome someone. He stuck his head out the door to see a girl that was probably in high school, with dark purple hair standing with the red miko robes in her hands.
“Thank you, Hotaru-chan for agreeing to take the place of my granddaughter until she finished college. I know you and she are friends. I hope you'll be happy here.”
So, Yuuichirou thought, He's already found someone to replace Rei. Yuuichirou got up to confront the old man when he felt darkness overtake him. When his vision cleared, he saw he was standing in a white room. “Hello?” he called, wanting whatever was happening to finish soon.
“Welcome, Ditio, son of Apalu, to my sanctuary.”
“Who's there?”
A senshi, dressed in a golden uniform, like the uniforms of the other senshi was standing next to a table which held a long sword with a reddish tinged blade. “I am here to give you your birthright.”
“If you need to give it to this…Ditio person, I'm not him…”
The golden dressed woman laughed. “But you are, my Lord. You are Ditio, son of Apalu, born into the body of Kumada Yuuichirou.”
Yuuichriou looked at the woman as he felt the memories overtake him. Memories of a life he didn't live, yet felt like he should have. He saw himself holding a beautiful girl in a dark red dress. He knew her name was Princess Aren. He saw the same girl transform into Sailor Mars. “How…?”
“During the time known as the Silver Millenium, you were the fiancé of Princess Aren of Mars. When you became engaged to her, you were accorded the power of Mars. You have the ability to use fire, as Princess Aren can, and you were trained to use the Fire Sword, this object,” she said, holding up the red sword.
“Princess Aren needs your help, Ditio, to defeat this new menace. Only with you help can she do it.” The unknown senshi handed the sword to Yuuichirou, who opened his eyes to the screams of the women inside the dorm. He held the sword in his hands and felt power unlike any other rushing through his body. When he looked down, he became Kamen no Mars.
End Flashback
Rei looked around her room and voiced a deep sigh. She vaguely wondered how much the repairs to her room would cost her. She stepped over a pile of debris on her floor and motioned Yuuichrou inside. “Sorry about the mess,” she said, looking down at her hands.
“I can't stay long,” Yuuichirou replied looking around the room in dismay. “I just wanted to make sure you got home safe.” He turned to head back towards the street when he felt Rei's hand on his arm.
“Are you sure you're okay, Chirou-san?”
As well as I can, considering the woman I love doesn't reciprocate my feelings. “I'm fine, Rei-san. I should go.”
Rei watched as he left and felt her stomach drop. I'm too late, she thought. He's already given up on me. She bent down, dejected to start cleaning up when she heard a small cough in the doorway. She looked up to see a rather short woman standing in the door.
“Can I help you?”
“I…uh…I think this is my room.”
“Uh…” Rei looked around, slightly confused. “Actually, I'm supposed to have a single. Perhaps you have the wrong room number.”
The woman looked at her paper and flipped it back and forth, then looked at the broken door on the floor where the room number was just visible. “203 D-wing….203 D-wing. It's a match.”
Behind the woman, the building director Suzuki Naoto appeared. “Ah, there you are Miss Hino …” he started, then seeing the destruction, looked at Rei. “What happened here?”
“Well, Naoto-sama, there was a girl hurt and I went out to help her, but was knocked out by an explosion. When I came too, my room was like this.” Rei flushed slightly at the lie she had to tell the man, but it couldn't be helped.
“Are you alright?” At Rei's nod, he continued, “And the girl who was attacked?”
“Sleeping right now. Sailor Mars appeared and helped defeat what was attacking her.”
“Sailor Mars? I never trusted those trussed up crime fighters…” Naoto said as he walked back out the room. Rei was about to throw something at the door frame when he popped his head back in. “By the way, Miss Hino. This girl is your roommate. The other dorms were full and we had to place her here. You will be reimbursed for the money you paid for the single for as long as she stays with you.”
Rei sighed and turned towards the patiently waiting woman. “I'm Hino Rei, first year.”
“I'm Kawane Masaka,” the woman said blinking her amber eyes at Rei. Can I
help you?”
“Since this is your room too, of course.” Rei watched as Masaka pulled her long pinkish-orange hair back into a ponytail at the nape of her neck. Taking the opportunity, Rei took a good look at her. This woman had hair that reached her mid-back. It was curly, frizzing somewhat around her ears. Her hairstyle was unusual. Two chunks of hair right above her ears had been separated out and braided. Those braids had then been crossed over the top of her head, behind her bangs, acting as a sort of headband. She was shorter than Rei, but Rei measured her to be about the size of Ami. When Masaka was done, she smiled, a bit confused at Rei, who was still staring at her. Rei flushed, and the two women bent to work in companionable silence.

“I think we're done, Masaka-san.”
“Yes. We were able to get most of the stuff cleaned up. What will we do about the door, though?”
“I'll ask Naoto about it when I head downstairs.”
“I've got to run and get my books. I'll see you later, Rei-san.”
“Good-bye, Masaka-san.” Rei watched her new roommate saunter down the hall and shook her head, heading in the opposite direction to catch Naoto to tell him about the door. He told her he would have it replaced by lights-out and shooed her out of his room.

Standing in the room of a man Neo-Queen Serenity once thought of as her friend she looked around, trying to see what was causing the fire. She had tried her Crystal, to no avail. As far as she could tell, the fire wasn't evil, just…fire. It had singed her dress a little when she got too close. But she could tell that the young man was not being hurt at all. In fact, he looked like he was still asleep. His mouth was open and he was snoring.
“I'm sorry, but I can't do anything for him.”
The man's mother fell to the floor crying just as the two palace guards that had tried to prevent the two women from fetching her ran into the house. “Your Highness, Sailor Venus needs your help. Sailor Mars is on fire…” The guards stopped and stared at the sight above him. “I'd imagine rather like this young man.”
Neo-Queen Serenity narrowed her eyes then brightened. She actually smiled when she turned to the young man's mother. “Mrs. Kumada I think your son will be fine. If you don't mind, we'll transfer him to the Palace where he might be more comfortable when he wakes.”
“I…if you th…think that w…would help, Y…your H…Highness.”
To the guards, Neo-Queen Serenity said, “could you try and move him into one of the spare bedchambers in Sailor Mars' wing?”
“Hai, Your Highness.”
Back at the Palace a hysterical Venus was pacing in the corridor outside of Sailor Mars' personal bedchamber. She kept looking at the end of the hall where she expected the queen to come from when her eyes turned completely blue and she started floating. A bright orange light suffused with hearts surrounded her and kept her aloft. A smile graced the Princess of Love's face which is how the queen and the guards pushing a flaming Yuuichiriou found her.
Neo-Queen Serenity sighed and finished pushing Yuuichirou into the bedchamber next to Mars with the long metal sticks wrapped in cloth she had found for the purpose of taking care of a fire man. She checked on Mars, and as it was with Yuuichirou, knew the flames weren't evil. A whispering voice told her it was the flames of Mars, making its Princess ready to rule. Neo-Queen Serenity nodded and whispered thank you to the disembodied voice, not really knowing who spoke, but sensing she was not evil. The queen moved out into the hall to take care of Sailor Venus. Soon the sound of activity died away from the hall.
If Neo-Queen Serenity had stayed, she would have seen a figure dressed in the traditional fuku of the Sol System step out of the shadows. She held a long golden staff with a vertically rounded, semi-flattened top. Inside the flattened area was a shape done up with glowing gems of blue, red, orange, green, purple, sea-green, dark blue, dark red, golden, and clear; a circle that was crossed at the top with a single dot in the middle. The clear gem was the biggest and was what the single dot in the middle was made up of.
The fuku was the typical white body suit, but the skirt had a top layer that was an orange-ish red, a middle layer as a yellow color, and the bottom layer was a very light blue, almost white. The back bow was the same three colors, but where faded together and the front bow, almost non-existent, was comprised of golden rays coming from a golden circle. She was in her eternal form and her shoulder guards and back sailor collar were the same color as her back bow. Her tiara was large, covering her entire forehead and hanging down over her nose. It was the same golden color as the other tiaras but it was completely covered in sparkling golden gems. The bottom of her skirt, the edges of her back bows, and her sailor collar had a golden lining. Her gloves where completely golden and made the staff look like it was growing from her hands. Her shoes, tall boots almost reaching under the bottom of her skirt, were also golden in color. Around her staff a long black ribbon was tied with the ends tucked under. She lightly kissed it and swung her staff over her head. When the head hit the floor, a portal opened up and she stepped through. If anyone had been in the room to witness this, they would have heard the whispered words of, “Forgive me, Haly!” come from the young senshi's mouth.
****************
Masaka stepped into a portal she had made in one of the stalls in the woman's bathroom and when she stepped through to the other side she was in the sailor fuku of Sailor Minerva. Like the other fukus, Sailor Minerva's started out as a white body suit. She had not evolved to the super level of her warrior status, so she still had the white cap sleeves. Her skirt was a light yellow, almost cream color, as was the accents on top of her gloves, and her back sailor collar. Her bows, both front and back, were teal with the center button of her front bow going back to the light yellow color. Her shoes had become flat “ballet slipper” shoes that were also the light yellow color of her skirt. Her gem in her tiara was the teal color like her bows.
“Ei!” she called when she stepped through. The dark red haired woman with long stick straight hair who attacked Rei's dorm stepped out of the shadows.
“Hai, Sailor Minerva?”
“Go back and try and collect more Mind Souls. If Sailor Mars shows up again, kill the person you are stealing the Mind Soul from and battle Sailor Mars. I want to study Sailor Mars' attacks. I am confidant you are stronger than she is, but I want to make sure.
“Sailor Minerva-sama…”
“Yes?”
“I'll need…”
“Of course,” she said, throwing a glowing card at the young servant woman, “but be more careful do not disappoint me again.” When Ei had left, Sailor Minerva followed her.

After talking to Naoto, Rei went down to the small garden next to the dorm. She felt that Yuuichirou was distant to her and she wanted to figure out why. What do you feel for him, Rei? And, does he feel the same for me? I'd like to talk to him about it, but every time I try to be nice to the man, I make some sort of rude comment. Rei sighed as she leaned her head back to the tree she was sitting against. “This is getting me no where,” she mumbled to herself.
“Talking to yourself, Rei-san?”
Rei looked up to see Yuuichirou standing in the garden. “We need to talk, Chirou-san.”
“I agree, Rei-san.”
“Why did you leave the temple?”
Yuuichirou mentally slapped himself. What can I say? That I'm the protector of Sailor Mars. “I think the more important question is why did you almost get hit today?”
“Oh, that…”
“Actually,” Yuuichirou interrupted. “It's really none of my business. Rei, I need to tell you the truth about something. You and I…we've never…”
Rei had an odd feeling she knew what he was going to say. “Yuu…”
“No, let me finish. Rei-san, I've loved you longer than I ever thought I could have loved anyone. Unfortunately, I know you don't feel the same for me. I wanted to let you know how I felt before I left your life for good. I'm tired of hoping one day you would feel something for me, so there it is. I'll be out of your life for good, but I didn't want you to leave without knowing how I truly felt.”
“Yuuichirou…?”
He leaned down and kissed Rei gently on the cheek, wishing it could be different. “Good-bye, my beautiful Rei.”
“I…” Just then, Rei and Yuuichirou both turned towards the sound of a scream coming from the other side of the garden. “Wait here, Chirou. I'll be right back.” Rei jumped up and ran towards the sound of the scream. She hid behind a tree and looked out at a horrifying scene. A shining crystal-like object was being held in the hands of Ei. The woman who the crystal came out of was covered head to foot in a brown fungus. The brown fungus dried up and fell away, revealing an ugly monster that held a stick of dynamite in one hand and fire coming from the fingers of her other hand. “Dynamo, get the Mind souls of other students and report back here to me.” Ei said, splitting the glowing card in two.
Rei turned, gripping her transformation wand in her hand to transform, and noticed Yuuichirou standing behind her. “I thought I told you to stay back there,” she hissed.
Yuuichriou flushed but shook his head. “I can handle this better than you. Go get help.” and with those words, Yuuichirou pulled out his sword and turned into Kamen no Mars. Rei stood there dumbfounded as she saw her love transform and throw himself into battle. With a final hissed, “Go!” from him, he turned is attention on the monster in front of him.
Rei paused, thinking of the conversation she had with Ditio earlier that day. She was the one he had given up one, and she had no one to blame but herself. She shook her head. She needed to transform and help save Ditio. She shouted, “MARS CRYSTAL POWER! MAKE-UP!” and the flames engulfed her. She leapt from the cover the trees provided her with and turned towards the monster.
“We'll talk later, Ditio,” Mars said to the man standing shocked in front of her. To the monster, she said, “stop right there! I'm Sailor Mars, the champion of love and justice. Let the fires of Mars burn away your evil!”
“I am Ditio, Prince Consort of Mars. My flames will teach you a lesson.”
“Ha! Not likely,” shouted Ei as she sent a stream of ice out, forming a long javelin. She sent it flying towards the monster, intending to kill it.
“No!” shout Mars.
Ditio, thinking fast, erected a barrier of hot flames, which the javelin did not make it through. “Take care of the monster, Mars, I'll deal with Ei.” Ditio said, pointing his sword towards Ei.
Mars nodded, but stopped dead.. She was alone. How was she supposed to heal this monster without Sailor Moon! “Ditio…” she said, just before she was hit with a claw of the monster and she went flying back and her head hit a bench. When she woke up, the scene looked like a grisly wax work. Ditio had his back to Ei, turning to respond to her call. Ei had taken that opportunity to throw an ice javelin at Ditio's back. The monster had thrown down its stick of dynamite and its claws were outstretched, stained with red. My blood, she realized as she looked down at her body.
“I have healed your wounds.” From around the corner stepped the golden dressed senshi. Her staff glinted, though how the sun could have reached it in the shade of the garden, Mars didn't know. “I have stopped time for a short time so you can receive the tools you need to defeat these creatures.”
“I thought only Sailor Pluto could stop time.”
The unknown senshi started at the sound of Sailor Pluto's name, but she smiled all the same. “She is not the only one. I can in extreme circumstances. This is about as extreme as we can get.”
Rei stood up, feeling the outfit she was wearing before on her body instead of her sailor fuku. “My transformation…”
“Don't worry. You'll get a new one,” the unknown senshi said, pulling out Rei's transformation wand. “That is, if your ready to evolve.”
“How did you…”
“All will be explained later. For now, know that my ancestors were the ones who made your tools, your wands, your artifacts, and your scepters…”
“I don't have a scepter.”
“Not yet,” she said, tearing the large crystallized power ball from the top of Rei's wand.
“Hey!”
“All will be explained later. When you wake up, you will be able to transform into your more powerful self.” She threw the crystal to the ground and out of the shattered pieces picked up a red stone about the size the Silver Imperium Crystal was before it when through its own transformation into Usagi's star seed. “This is the Scarlet Imperium Crystal, the akazuishou. This is the royal crystal for the planet Mars. It is yours now.”
When Rei took the crystal immediately a shining bronze case formed around it. It was, like Eternal Sailor Moon's, heart shaped, but at the base of the heart was Mars' planetary symbol, a heart turned almost upside down with an arrow point up towards the right from the base of the heart. The arrow was pointing inside the heart of the casing. Surrounding the casing were objects that, on closer inspection, revealed themselves to be flames. “It's beautiful!” Rei breathed.
“It's yours.”
“Wait,” Rei said, stopping the unknown senshi as she started to fade away. “Who are you?”
“I am no one of consequence.”
Rei's mind tried to screech to stop at that but she didn't give it anytime to object to not being told who she was. “Please…Ditio…”
“Ah, yes. I'd almost forgotten.” She held her staff in the air and a shaft of sunlight appeared on her. She twirled the staff above her head, stopping with the symbol pointing out. She mumbled her phrase and a wave of intense golden/white light leapt from the staff and struck the javelin, melting it instantly. “That is all I am allowed to do. You might want to transform now.”
Rei looked down and saw her hand wrapped around the casing of her new transformation object. She held up her hand and shouted, “MARS ETERNAL POWER! MAKE-UP!” The lid of her casing flew off and the akazuishou flashed a brilliant red. Like the flames moving up a piece of paper, a thin line of fire flew up her arms which were held together in a praying position in front of her face, leaving behind white gloves except for the upper cuff which became purple and the tiny flames at the base of her hand and at her elbows. Next, the flames caused red shoulder guards to appear along with a white body suit and her red sailor collar, with the white lines turning golden. The transformation broach surrounded by the flames appeared where her front bow was at one time. Her back bow had become elongated and turned purple. When her skirt formed, she threw her arms down to her side, and three layers formed. The top layer remained the red color of her original fuku, but the middle layer became a purple color, and her bottom layer became dark red. A small red jewel formed at the seam between the white body suit and the red skirt. Her shoes were still red high heals but a tiny flame became emblazoned on her ankle in the form of a tattoo. Her earrings became bronze and red stone tear drop shaped, along with the shape in the center of her choker. Instead of a tiara, her planetary symbol, briefly glowing red before dying down to just a simple red heart and arrow, appeared on her forehead. Mars went down on one knee and threw her arms out to the side, her hair blowing back from her face in her eternal pose.
“Good-bye, Sailor Mars, and good luck.” Mars felt the world go blurry and it was like someone had turned the sound back on.
“Mars!”
“I'm fine Ditio. Watch out behind you!”
“What the…” Mars heard Ei say as she looked at the new and improved Sailor Mars.
“I am Eternal Sailor Mars. I come to fight for justice of the people of this University. Don't mess with me.” With that, Mars turned towards the monster who had slowly been inching its way towards Mars. Not knowing, nor caring how she knew, Mars lifted the jewel from her waist and held it up, letting a long staff form in her hands. The jewel grew to twice its size and a small pearl started to drop from it. Right when it seemed the pearl would fall, Mars slammed the jewel down on to the staff forming a scepter that was about three feet long made of hardened bronze with a red handle and a red jewel with a pearl hanging from the bottom. “Flaming…” a wind blew, making Mars' hair blow backwards, “…Crystal…” a bright light formed in the red jewel and flowed down the pearl towards the ground, “…Cleansing…” red hot flames sprung up in a wall like fashion in front of Mars where the red light fell, “…Tears!” The wall of flames hit the monster, turning it black, then a wash of water flew past the monster and the original woman lay on the ground breathing heavily. The Mind Soul flew from Ei's hand and back into the woman's body.
Ei squeaked because as soon as the Mind Soul left her hand, Ditio's sword tip met her throat.
“Stop!” shouted Mars.
“Can you heal her?”
“I'll try.” Mars concentrated and called on the akazuishou. A wave of red washed through the garden. After a few minutes, Mars collapsed causing Ditio to turn his back on Ei. Ei's face, which had displayed joy turned suddenly evil. She called an ice sword to her hand and she leapt towards Ditio's back.
“NO! Ditio turned, but Mars had stood up to act. She held her scepter up with one hand, “Mars…” power started gathering at the tip, around the jewel. Before she could finish her statement, Ei swirled out and was gone. “Don't ever do that again!” Mars shouted. “I love you, you big goof!”
“Mars?”
“Not Mars,” Rei said, as she let her transformation melt away. “Rei. I love you Yuuichirou!”
