Atop a bed of mangled sheets, a bulging mass of desheveled blonde hair stirred as Runaway Love played through an alarm clock.
“Ungh….” A voice beneath the mass groaned. “Just five more minutes…” Grudgingly, the girl on the bed got up to quiet the alarm clock; and by quiet I mean by throwing it out the five story window. “Stupid alarm clocks,” she murmered. She let a smile of success show on her face as she heard the clock make contact with the cold hard pavement outside. Just as she burrowed her head beneath the covers again, a girl that looked to be just a few years older than her burst through the door.
“Mornin', Ayame!” chirped the estatic teen. “You need to get up, or else you'll be late to get to the Academy!”
Ayame bolted out of bed. “Academy?!! DAMNIT, I forgot!!!” She hurriedly made her way to the bathroom.
The other girl stood outside the door. “Y'now, Ayame, it's things like this that you shouldn't forget.”
Over the noise of the shower running, Ayame shouted, “Cannit, Akira! Just cuz you're a Interm* doesn't mean mean you know it all.”
Akira smiled. “No… but it does mean that I can use my powers to get to school on time, whereas you Beginners* have to get there the old fashioned way,” she struck a pose, “walking!”
Ayame grumbled something as she brushed her teeth that sounded a lot like “Stupid Interms” or something along those lines. She quickly made her way to her closet and picked out something to wear.
As she was putting on her pink and black T shirt that said `Debutante', Akira said, “Remember, sis. Beginners have to wear—”
“Whatever they like wearing, got it” Ayame droned.
Her sister continued. “Until you know—“
“What senshi I'm gonna be, got it,” she did it again.
“Actually,” Akira said as Ayame put on a pair of black Tripp Jeans and fluffy pink house slippers, “we already know which senshi you are. I mean,” she clarified, “all the senshi in our family have been a Sailor Asteroid, Sailor Nebula, Sailor Starlet, or Sailor Comet. It's in our genes, so it's only natural that your one, too. Seriously! Mom's Super Sailor Comet, Grandma was Super Sailor Asteroid, Aunt Kasumi is Super Sailor Starlet, and Cousin Kiyoshi is Sailor Nebula. And get this. Cousin Kiyoko is starting today, too. That means that either of you will be Sailor Asteroid or Sailor Comet.”
Ayame snorted. “And who are you again? Sailor Star-butt?”
“That's Starlet,” Akira snapped.
“Whatever,” the younger of the two mumbled.
Akira smirked. “Starlet Power, Make Up!” Yellow light engulfed Akira as her clothes disappeared. Blue and yellow stars swirled around her silhouette, and when they cleared Sailor Starlet stood in all her starry glory. She wore a fuku that consisted of a blue skirt, blue sailor collar, blue heels, and a blue four-pointed star as a brooch. Her bows, choker, and gem were yellow.
“Show off,” said Ayame grumpily.
Sailor Starlet went to her sister's window. “Don't forget that when you're given your name look for me at the Asteroid Table at lunch. All the other Senshi from the Asteroid Belt sit there, so make sure to follow the Asteroid Beginners, kay? Later sis!” With that, Sailor Starlet jumped backwards out of the window, winking and throwing a raspberry* at Ayame. “Star Board!” A yellow, star-shaped hover board appeared out of a glowing bundle of little stars. (A/N: Think Kirby) Sailor Starlet landed on her Star Board and went her way.
Ayame sighed as she closed her window. “And so my first day begins.” She jumped down four flights of stairs to get to the kitchen, gave a quick “Mornin' Mom, Dad!” along with two chaste kisses to the cheeks as her toast popped up. Quickly buttering them, she scarfed down the two suckers.
“Woah! Slow down there, squirt!” her dad, Hideki, said. “What's the rush?”
“Duh, Dad. It's my first day at SSA, and I'm gonna be late!”
Her mom, Arisu, took a sip of her coffee. “Why don't you let your father drop you off?”
“No way! I bet none of the other girls' dads are gonna drop them off.”
“Oh, come now,” her mother reasoned. “It won't be that bad. How about half the way to school, then?
Ayame mulled it over in her head. “Fine. But only half, got it?”
Hideki smiled and pulled out a yellow tulip. “Got it” In a flash of yellow light, Hideki was gone, and in his place stood Asteroid Knight. “Have evrything?” he asked. Ayame jammed on her sneakers, put on her small knapsack, and nodded. Asteroid Knight then put his hand on her shoulder.
As they both began to glow a yellowish color, Arisu said, “Have a great day at school, hun!” Ayame flashed her a smile, and then they were gone.
~~~*~~~
Ayame blinked. She was now in an alleyway with her father. He turned to her. “School is just a fewblocks away, Aya. If you run, you should make it on time.” He kissed her on her forehead. “Remember, Aya, no matter which senshi you become, I'll always love you.”
A little confused at what he said, Ayame watched as her dad glowed again and was off. What did he mean by that?
Shrugging it off until later, Ayame proceeded in running the rest of the way to SSA. Just as she made it through the massive marble double doors, the bell rang, signaling that no one else was to come inside. Sighing in relief, Ayame made her way through the crowd of bustling girls to the front desk. The lady behind the counter had short, dark green hair and steel blue eyes hidden behind a pair of wire-rim glasses. The nametag on her blue and white suit read `Hello! My name is Yamato Kei.' She looked up. “Yes, how may I help you?”
Ayame smiled uncertainly. “um… I'm new here and I was wondering—“
“Name.” Yamato* cut her off.
“Um… Excuse me?” Ayame said.
“Name?” the green haired woman repeated a little slower.
“Oh. I'm Konoe Ayame.”
Yamato typed rapidly on her computer. “A Beginner, no?” At Ayame's nod, she added, “Sister of Konoe Akira?” Another nod was received. “All Beginners are to report to the auditorium when the announcement is given by the Headmistress. Until then, you are allowed to walk around and explore the Main Corridor.”
Ayame nodded again and, with a smile and a bow, she said, “Domo arigato, Yamato-san.” Then she proceeded with walking around. `Main Corridor, huh? Wonder where this door leads….' Quickly making sure that no one noticed her, she ducked into a slightly ajar door that stood ominously at the far end of the corridor. The proceeding hallway was dark and gloomy, and lit by a small glimmer of flourescent lighting emited from a crack of a connecting room. The room itself seemed a mile away, and next to the door there was a shady figure. Squinting to see better, Ayame saw that it was a girl, about her sister's age, and she was peering into the crack in the door. Just as she was about two yards away, Ayame tripped on something, seemingly a piece of glass, producing a small thud that echoed on the walls much louder than actually was. The girl whipped around, shoulder length hair flailing wildly as glowing eyes glared with a tiny hint of surprise. The yet-to-be-named girl moved herself from the door quickly and, grabbing Ayame forcefully by the arm, padded back down the hallway and through the door. Once in the Main Corridor, the girl whipped around again and faced Ayame. She had midnight blue hair, pale, insipid skin, and intense opalescent eyes that seared into Ayame's soul. She glared that crystal eyed glare again, tearing her apart and stripping her, limb from limb.
“What were you doing down there?!” the girl demanded gruffly.
This had startled the other out of her wits. Shaking audibly, she mumbled, “I could ask you the same….”
The girl snorted. “That's none of your business. What I do is mine alone, understand?” At Ayame's nod, the girl pushed past her and stalked down the corridor, mixing into the crowd of vibrant colored tees and jeans. Just then, a voice rang through the area over the intercom.
“All Beginners, please report to the Central Auditorium. I repeat: All Beginners, please report to the Central Auditorium. Gathering of Counsel heads is advised for further notice.”
Idly, Ayame followed the other girls in the crowd through huge double doors. She sat down in the fifth row next to a girl with green eyes and long, purple hair that was braided on the left side of her face. The girl was wearing a short purple skirt, a black tank top, and black tennis shoes. She turned to Ayame and smiled.
“Hi! I'm Shiyasu Kotone! What's your name?”
Ayame smiled back. “Konoe Ayame. It's nice to meet you, Shiyasu-san!”
“Don't be so formal! We're starting together, so let's be friends, kay?”
“Kay!” she said back.
Once all the seats were taken up, a woman in a flowing, white gown walked onto the stage. She had bubble gum pink hair that was tied in tear-shaped odangoes, red eyes, and looked to be about thirty or so years old; but they all knew better than that. Several gasps were heard amidst the girls.
“It's the queen!” one girl said
“It can't be! Why would she be here?” said another.
“Isn't her youngest daughter starting today, too?” Kotone asked Ayame.
Ayame shrugged as Neo Queen Serenity started her speech.
“It is my honor and great pleasure to welcome you all to Sailor Senshi Academy. Today you will start your long journey in senshiship. Though it will not be an easy one, I can assure you that your journey will be worth it in the end.” Serenity paused and looked into the crowd. On that note, I would like to like to officially welcome you on a personal level; through your initiation. Now, let us begin.” She turned to the curtain behind her. Almost instantly, the curtain was drawn to reveal a medium-sized gray cat on a black chair. The cat had a golden crescent moon on its forehead, and wore a gold bell around its neck.
Serenity continued. “One by one, you are to ascend the steps of this stage. When you do, go straight to Diana and kneel before her. She will then look into your soul, see your power, and tell you one word. That word will be your senshi name. Then, you are to go to the next room.” She motioned towards another marble door. “There you will receive your schedule for the rest of the year. -looks at girl at the end of row one- Why don't we start with you?”
The platinum blonde girl nodded politely and walked up the stairs. Ayame immediately knew her to be her cousin, Kiyoko. When Kiyoko reached the queen, she stopped, bowed, and continued on her way. She knelt before Diana. Diana bore into Kiyoko's azure eyes, as if reading her like a book. A beam of light emitted from her crscent moon and struck her on her forehead. Kiyoko gasped, as did many others in the crowd, including Ayame and Kotone. When the light subsided, a small grayish symbol shown brightly on the blonde's forehead. Diana immediately knew what it stood for.
“Comet”, the gray cat said.
Kiyoko nodded, exited the stage opposite of whence she came, and walked through the door.
This same process occurred over and over until it was Kotone's turn. “Wish me luck,” she whispered.
“Ganbatte kudasai, Koto-chan!” Ayame whispered back. She watched as Ktone did what the girls before her did: walk, bow, walk again, kneel, get hit by the beam, wait. Ayame leaned forward in her seat to hear what Diana would say.
“Sound.”
Then, Kotone proceeded with the rest of the cycle: nod, walk off the stage, go through the big door. `Great,' Ayame thought, `My turn. Wheeeeee!' As she made her way up the steps, she thought to herself, `What's the point of this? If Kiyoko is Sailor Comet, Akira is Sailor Starlet, and Kiyoshi is Sailor Nebula, then that automatically makes me Sailor Asteroid. So why must I do what everyone else is just to find out I'm who my grandmother was?' Ayame bowed before Serenity, received a nod of approval, and continued. `Seriously! Diana's gonna tell me exactly what Akira did this morning.' She knelt before the gray cat and withstood the beam of light. It tickled a little bit, but she resisted the urge to laugh. `Why must I wait just to hear that I'm—”
“Solaris.” Diana's small voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Huh?”
