Chapter 2
"Wow... just... wow." Brian Littrell stammered, shocked about what his
best friend just
told him. He stared at Nick in disbelief. "Wow."
Brian knew that Nick was in Santa Monica, but when his Durango came
flying into Kev's
driveway at 90 miles per hour he knew something was wrong. Bad news
was the last thing that
Brian had wanted, especially after AJ going into rehab. Nick's news to
his best friend had shocked
Brian speechless.
Nick had just told him everything his mother- or rather, Jane Carter,
had said. Brian
was just as shocked as Nick, and wasn't sure how to comfort his young
friend. "So you were
kidnapped when you were six weeks old? And you have a twin? What about
your real
parents?" Brian asked, trying to comprehend what his best friend was
going through.
"That's all that she told me," Nick lied. He purposely neglected to
tell Frick that he
was not human, but Negaversian. What would Brian or the other guys
think about him if he
was an alien? He didn't want to lose his friendship with Brian, so he
left that detail out of his
story. Besides, Brian would think that everything he just told him was
a joke, when Nick only
wished that it was. "I can't even look at her or my fath- Bob," Nick
growled. "How could they
do that to me? How could they do that to my parents?"
Brian sighed and looked up at the ceiling, as if he would find an
answer for Nick up
there. "I don't know why this happened, Nick, but I want you to know
that we will always
be there for you, no matter what happened in the past." He placed a
comforting hand on
Frack's shoulder. "Tell you what, why don't we see if we can find your
twin brother?"
Nick looked Brian in the eye, on the verge of crying yet again. "You
think we could
find him?"
"Sure, why not? We're the Backstreet Boys, we can do anything!" Brian
smiled.
"Where do we start looking for him?" Nick wondered.
"Well... as much as you might not like this idea, you should start by
asking your mother-
I mean Jane," Brian corrected himself quickly. "Maybe there's some
more things in that black
box that she had, Nick."
"Yeah... maybe..." Nick was hesitant, not sure if he could let Brian
find out his deep,
dark, secret but also not wanting to return home alone. "Could you
come with me Rok?"
"Of course! Isn't that what friends are for?" Brian smiled again.
The two friends headed out, leaving a note for Kevin on the
refrigerator that said
where they were headed, and nothing more. Nick wanted to tell Kevin,
Howie, and later AJ
personally what was going on. They took Nick's Durango and drove down
to Marina Del Rey
to the Carters' residence. Nick's fingers clung to the wheel, and he
looked to Brian. "I don't
know what to say to them. I can't even face them."
"Nick, I know that this is a surprise to you and all, but you know as
well as I do that
they are still your family. You shouldn't let this change that," Brian
said.
"Brian, I know that, but they kidnapped me from my real family! How
can anyone do
that? They are the monsters, not me!" Nick said bitterly.
"What do you mean, 'they are the monsters, not me'?" Brian looked at
Nick curiously.
"I never said you were a monster. Are you forgetting to tell me
something?"
Nick suddenly realized what he said. "Nothing. I'm just angry and
upset. That's all."
"Oh," Brian said. "Alright, we don't have all day so let's get out
there and make things
somewhat right. Maybe that will lead us to finding your twin brother."
"Okay," Nick sighed. "Might as well go face the music again."
The two Backstreet Boys walked over to the front door, and Nick
reached out to open
the door. However, someone had beat Nick to it and the door swung open
wide.
It was Bob. Nick couldn't hide the *gulp* that emerged from his
throat. His "father"
did not look too happy. "Why did you leave in such a rush after
causing your mother to burst
into tears? What is wrong with you, son? I know you're worried about
your friend but you
shouldn't lose your temper on your poor mother!"
Something inside Nick suddenly snapped. "WELL YOU BOTH SHOULD HAVE
THOUGHT ABOUT THAT BEFORE YOU KIDNAPPED ME WHEN I WAS AN
INFANT!!!!!"
Bob stared at Nick in shock, his eyes wide. "How did you know-?"
"I told him, Bob," Jane walked over to her husband, her eyes puffy and
red. "He
found out about his powers by accident."
Bob looked to his wife, then to Nick. "You told him everything?" he
asked Jane.
"Yes, everything," Jane sniffled.
Bob looked pensive for a moment, then he said, "Come in, guys. Let's
talk about this
like adults, Nick."
Nick looked to Brian, and Brian just shrugged. They followed Bob and
Jane inside. For
the first time in his life, Nick entered the house and did not feel at
all at home.
Nick and Brian sat on the couch, and Bob and Jane sat in their chairs,
facing the couch.
In her hands, Jane held the small black box. Bob cleared his throat.
"Nick, everything we have
about your past is in this box. We wanted to wait until you were old
enough to understand to
give this to you, but you were always on tour and so happy and busy we
didn't want to take
that away from you. Please hear us out, I know that it may sound awful
that you were kidnapped
along with your twin, but all of our intentions were good. Your other
home was not a fit place
to raise children. It was dark, and everyone who lived there only
looked out for themselves."
Nick looked disgusted, but Brian gave him a look to keep him calm for
now. Jane
looked to Bob, their eyes met, and he nodded. She handed Nick the
black box, which was
surprisingly heavy. It was made of a dark, heavy marble. Nick's heart
began to thud loudly
in his chest. He wasn't sure what he would find within this tiny,
heavy box that could help him
find his long lost twin. "Open it," Bob urged. "It's what you wanted,
isn't it?"
Nick's mouth went dry. He could only hear the loud pumping of his
rapid heartbeat.
Even though his senses had been heightened ever since the lightning
incident, all he could hear
was the thump, thump, thump of his heart. Slowly and delicately, he
lifted the heavy lid from
the small box.
Inside the box was a small collection of aging photos, along with a
charm that looked
like a crystal shard. It was a beautiful crystal, the color was unique
and was best described as
a dark emerald color. Accompanying the charm was a lovely silver
chain, and a folded piece of
paper. Carefully, as if it would crumble into dust in his hands, he
picked up the piece of paper
and gently unfolded it.
It was written in a language that Nick had never heard before in his
life, and yet he
could perfectly translate the letter as if he had always known this
language.
"If you are ever separated from each other, this crystal will guide
you to back to one
another." Nick read the letter out loud. "This will lead me to my
brother?"
"If that's what it says," said Jane. "Then I guess so."
Nick gingerly ran a finger over the smooth crystal. Suddenly, the
crystal began to give
off a bright glow, startling Nick and he quickly pulled away his hand.
"No way," Brian breathed,
not sure what to make of this scene. "That can't possibly be real."
Nick then shuffled through the pictures. He saw some more of his twin
and himself, but
it was the last picture at the bottom of the pile that caught his
attention. He stopped, staring at
the picture with tears in his eyes.
It was a woman, with long blond hair and green eyes. In her arms she
held a tiny baby
that Nick just knew was him. His heart stopped. "My mother," he said.
Next to the beautiful woman was a tall, handsome man with icy blue
eyes and long,
white hair. In his arms was Nick's twin. "My father," he breathed.
He looked up to Bob and Jane. "Why did you take us away from our
parents? What
did they ever do to you?" Nick asked, so much pain in his voice.
Tears flowed from Jane's eyes again as Bob spoke, "You don't know what
type of
people they were, Nick. Their type of people only thrive on the pain
of others. They made
us suffer over a thousand years ago, almost destroyed all of mankind.
They sap the energy
off humans like vampires, sucking the life right out of a person. The
goal of the Initiative was
to discover about demons' weaknesses and destroy them, and you and
your brother were
part of this program's research." Bob paused. "You both were separated
for our protection.
Two Negaversians are too powerful to control. We were experimenting to
see how they
develop and if they can adapt to a human lifestyle, without sucking
energy out of people. You
and your brother both proved that they did not need to drain energy to
survive. They only did
it to torture innocent people.
"Your mother and I made a mistake, though. We fell in love with you,
you became
our son. You see, not too long before we took you, Jane had a
miscarriage. It really hurt the
both of us very bad." He cleared his throat again. "You... you kind of
filled that emptiness, even
though you weren't meant to be a replacement and by any means you
aren't, Nick. I had to
leave the Initiative because I didn't want any more harm to come to
you, and something
happened to change the Initiative's objectives and they headed to
California. They haven't
contacted us since." He cleared his throat again. "We'll let this sink
in. Let's go start dinner,
Jane." They both got up and left the room.
Nick wasn't sure what to think about all of this. He turned to look at
Brian, worried
about what his best friend would think. Brian knew that Nick wasn't
human.
Nick was relieved to see the concerned look on Brian's face as he
absorbed what
Bob had told them. Brian gave Nick a worried look that pushed him over
the edge. Tears
rolled down his face. "Brian, please don't hate me. I didn't want you
to think that I was a
freak." Nick sobbed.
"Oh Nick, you're my best buddy, you know that," Brian said, putting a
comforting
arm around Nick's shoulders. "We're Frick and Frack, you know that.
Best buds forever.
No matter what. Besides," he smiled, "we've always thought that you
were from another
planet."
