Chapter 3
It was later on that night. Nick had felt suddenly akward around his
"family" even
though he had known them his entire life, and so he asked Brian to
stay overnight. Brian gladly
accepted, thankful to get away from Kevin and Kristen's... well, to
put it nicely "newlywed
activities". Besides, Brian wanted to be there for Nick during this
difficult time of his life. That's
what friends are for, after all.
Not a word was spoken during dinner. BJ, Leslie, Angel and Aaron
exchanged worried
glances. They knew that Nick and their parents had an argument, but
they had no idea about
what the fight involved.
Nick kept glancing up at Aaron, and Aaron could see that he was on the
verge of crying,
not at all like the usual happy-go-lucky-prankster that he looked up
to since he was little.
'Aaron... he isn't my brother,' Nick thought glumly. 'We've always
been so close, though.
It doesn't seem right to say that he isn't my little bro...'
After a silent and uncomfortable supper, Nick and Brian retreated into
Nick's bedroom.
Brian looked to Nick, not knowing what to say. He hoped that Nick
would start the
conversation, but instead he went back to shuffling through the
contents of the small, black box.
Nick held up the picture of his parents. His REAL parents. He sighed
aloud, then
finally spoke. "I can't believe that they were heartless... I know in
my heart that they both
loved us very much... they don't understand at all."
"They were wrong to judge your family," Brian agreed, "but they
honestly thought
that what they were doing was the best for you."
"The best for me? Bri, they kidnapped us! We were nothing more than
their guinea
pigs," Nick snarled. "They don't understand. So how could they even
care for me? They say
that they love me, and yet they trash my real family. If they really
cared, they wouldn't do
that to me!"
Nick's gaze returned to the photo again. "They loved me. They loved my
brother,
too. And they took us away from them, and think that they didn't care.
That we were just
things to them, not someone that they loved more than anything else in
the universe." Nick
looked to Brian. "Don't you see? It's all a lie. Me... this... Nick
Carter doesn't exist... it is
my stage name, nothing more... I am nothing without them." His eyes
filled with tears, so
much emotion now pouring out from the bottom of his heart. "I need to
find out where I
belong. Who I really am. It isn't enough anymore to be just a
Backstreet Boy. I thought I
knew everything, but I don't even know my real name, Brian. I don't
know who I am."
"Well, I know who you are, Nick," Brian said, placing a comforting
hand on his
friend's trembling shoulder. "You are one of the nicest people that I
know, and you've
always been like a little brother to me. Don't let this change that
between us, Nick. You
know that I'm behind you one hundred percent on this. I'm going to
help you find your
twin brother. Maybe Kevin, Howie, and even AJ can help out, too. Like
I said before,
when we get together, the Backstreet Boys can do anything!" He flashed
an encouraging
smile to his young friend. "So why don't we figure out how to use this
crystal to find your
twin brother?"
Nick nodded, and gently stroked the crystal that laid inside the
satin-lined marble
box. "This is the key to find my twin brother. So let's put it to
use."
He lifted it carefully out of the dark box, and it began to emit a
mysterious glow as
it had done earlier. Nick closed his eyes, and he began to
concentrate. He could feel the
light from the crystal growing stronger with each second that he held
it in his hand. He
suddenly had a vision that was so clear he couldn't believe it was
real at first. It was as if
his eyes were opened wide, although he could feel them shut tight. All
around him was
darkness, but he felt completely comfortable in this place. His
sensitive eyes quickly became
adjusted to the dark, and he could see that he was in a dead
courtyard, filled with stark trees
and tangled, dark bushes. He looked up, and he could see a tall and
luminous tower of the
stony castle ahead. Something told him that this dark, dying place was
his home. He walked
through the courtyard, avoiding the uprooted tangle and mess that
littered the earth he walked
upon. Suddenly something caught the corner of his eye, and he spun to
look.
There, in the middle of the courtyard, was a dried up fountain that
was now choked
with vines and weeds. He walked closer to the fountain, mesmerized
somehow by it.
The crystal no longer was in his hand, but instead was around his
neck. It began to
glow brighter with every step toward the fountain. Suddenly, a beam of
light shot from the
mystical shard and hit the fountain. Water began to slowly bubble out
of the top of the dried
fountain, murky and dark. A few seconds later, though, the water was
flowing freely down the
fountain and the water had cleared. Nick stared in awe as the vines
vanished before his eyes,
and suddenly the dark stone of the fountain turned into a beautiful,
crystal surface.
Nick peered down at his reflection in the water, and was shocked to
see that the
fountain was deeper than he imagined. He could not see the bottom, all
he saw was the water
grow darker and darker in color, without an end. His gaze went back to
his relflection. The
image of himself stared back, bending a little with the smooth,
ripples of each wave in the pond.
The water sparkled like liquid diamonds as the mysterious source
continued to flow.
Nick was so mesmerized by the fountain he did not notice that the
darkness was gone,
and in its place the dark slate turned into a shimmering gold. The
trees in the courtyard bloomed,
green speckled with pink blossoms. Flowers rose from the ground and a
sweet smell emerged
from each one. The dark and gloomy courtyard became a mystical
wonderland within seconds.
He felt the urge to fall into the fountain, become a part of its
mystery. He bent over,
his hand outstretched. His fingertips felt the cool, fresh water, and
suddenly a flash of bright
light blinded the Backstreet Boy. He fell backwards, landing hard on
his butt.
He blinked, then looked up at the fountain again. He gasped.
Two figures floated above the fountain. One was a man, and the other a
woman, and
they both had metallic colored skin and clothing, almost a blend of
blue and gold. Nick's eyes
bulged in terror. THIS was definitely NOT expected.
"You beseech the knowing ones?" asked the male.
"Umm..." Nick was speechless. "I guess..."
"What do you bring us?" asked the female.
"Umm..." Nick fished in his pockets, and pulled out a small brown bag.
"M&Ms?"
They share a knowing look. "Ambrosia is overrated." The M&Ms flew into
her hand.
"Uhh... so what... are you? My parents?" Nick asked, dumbfounded.
"Your parents are long dead," said the man.
"We are the Oracles," said the woman.
"On the side of light, you may ask us a question." The man said.
Nick didn't hesitate. "Where is my brother?"
"Your brother..."
"...is on the other side..."
Nick almost burst into tears. "But for how long? Why?"
"For six years."
"Because it was written."
"What? I don't understand!" Nick was irritated. "Where's MY BROTHER?"
The Oracles, too, began to look annoyed.
"We told you."
"He is on the other side."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean? Tell me that again in PLAIN
ENGLISH!"
"You have asked your question..."
"And we have answered it the best we can."
"Now begone."
Nick felt a warm light surround him, and the next thing he knew he was
looking up at
Brian's face. "You okay, Nick? You just passed out." Brian asked,
concerned.
"They said that my brother is dead, that he's been dead for six
years." Nick said
solemnly, trying not to cry. "Now what do I do?"
Brian looked at his friend curiously. "Who told you he was dead?"
"The Oracle," Nick sniffled.
"Man, this is too weird. I think you've been watching the Matrix too
many times. Did
she offer you a cookie?" Brian joked.
"NO, but she took my M&Ms..."
Brian shook his head. "I think you've had a long day, and now you need
to sleep."
Nick sighed. "Maybe..." He searched his pockets for his M&Ms, but they
were gone.
"Come on, man. You need to rest. We'll start fresh in the morning."
"Alright."
A few minutes later Brian was sound asleep on a cot, and Nick laid
staring at the ceiling,
unable to sleep. Silently, a single tear fell down his cheek, one of
thousands that he had shed
during that day. He mouthed the word, "Why?", and after twenty minutes
later he fell into a
restless sleep.
