Usagi sighed as she leaned back in the chair and let her head drop to the armrest. How horrible life was! How awful the world! She winced as she heard the footsteps of her husband coming up to their bedroom. She wondered how her life - once so full of dreams and hope for the future had turned out this way. Her life - a cosmic joke if ever there was one. She had a bratty daughter who she reluctantly given birth to, and she had married a man she didn't love. He was not her soul mate, he was not the one she was destined to be with. Ah destiny! She had played with it one time too many and now she paid the price. The other senshi - had she ever truly been one? - had long forgotten her. Shunned and forsaken for a choice she made so many years ago. Mamoru had wed Setsuna, revealing the truth of Chibi Usa's parentage. He had seen Rei on the side and died tragically a few years ago. Usagi could not bring herself to mourn her former love however, her life having made her a bitter woman. Rumour had it that the King of Earth's last words were her name - her forbidden name.
Haruka and Michiru had retreated to their own planets, her use to them complete. The Inner Senshi led successful and happy lives and Usagi mused that you'd never know that they had turned viciously on her, forced her to relinquish her position, beaten her until she surrendered her crystal, tormented her until she abdicated her throne. They had found a hateful and unintelligent man and married her off to him, sending her deep into the wilderness to live. Rei maintained the barrier surrounding the property - Usagi could never escape.
How had this come to be? How had this existence happened? Usagi knew. She'd always known. When she had forsaken all that she was, when she had listened to the persuasive words of Haruka and Michiru - doing things their way. In those moments she became a puppet - no free will or mind of her own. It had all began when she had allowed Hotaru to be killed, when she had allowed herself to believe that no good would come of that precious life that she so treasured. The Grail was locked away - she was not the Messiah - her actions had renounced her. The Inners had been so furious at how she had handled Pharaoh 90, Nehelenia and Galaxia. She had done what she was told while her heart cried out for something else, her soul yearned for something more…another way, another solution. This then, was her punishment for her sins. Her heart no longer pure, her hands red with the blood of innocents, her will no longer her own…The cruellest irony of all was that she couldn't even kill herself. Rei again had ensured that she would go on living in torment and suffering - paying the price for all those she had allowed to die. Rei deemed it was true justice.
"Usagi!" a crude voice hollered. "Where are you woman? I'm warning you that if you try to avoid me tonight I'll beat the living daylights out of you!"
"Do it then and be silent daddy! Beat mommy and knock it off!" Usagi's daughter yelled back down the stairs.
"Sorry Miwa honey." Her husband apologized. "Usagi!" Takeru yelled again.
Usagi was determined not to let the bastard see her cry again. Hatred at him coursed through her as she debated killing him. How could a heart and soul once so pure be corrupted so much? What was another life to one who had killed so many? She cursed her weak willed body, unable to refuse Haruka and Michiru's demands. If she could do it over…if she could turn back time…
"If you could do it again, what would you change?"
Usagi's head jerked up as she stared at Setsuna. "What the hell do you want?" she hissed. "Haven't you done enough?" Usagi was the only one who knew that Setsuna had tampered with time, the only one who knew that Time's Guardian had an agenda all her own and the rest of the world be damned.
Setsuna sighed. "I cannot ask for your forgiveness for I know you forgive nothing anymore. Your pure heart and soul have become dark and tainted."
"What can I say? I'm a lucky girl." Usagi quipped sarcastically.
Setsuna closed her eyes then focused on Usagi. "He always loved you." She said simply. "He'd call your name at night, when we were making love - when he thought I couldn't hear. He carried a picture of you with him, a very old picture I might add, but he carried it always. I discovered that I never loved him the way he needed - the way you did. Small Lady I love and I always will love and cherish that angel child - but she was never meant to be mine either. This is the worst of all futures I foresaw so many years ago. Cloistered out here you don't know what is going on in the galaxy - well let me tell you - war. A war that you could have prevented, a war you could have stopped. So I ask again PRINCESS - for you are the true princess no matter that Rei destroyed your moon - what would you change?"
Usagi sat silent for a moment, letting it all sink in. "What would I change?" she laughed mirthlessly. "What WOULDN'T I change?" she shook her head. "No matter how greatly they forced me, I never should have turned my back on my principles, I never should have let myself be swayed. I should never have betrayed myself."
"I can break a law that you yourself set down in another time and place." Setsuna began. "I can take you back to the beginning - back to where it all started to go wrong - for no matter what future or time I see, in all of them you are the only salvation."
"And what of your desire for Mamoru?" Usagi arched an eyebrow.
"I should never have meddled. It is enough for me to know that I had him in one time, it doesn't matter when. I wanted to make Chronos jealous and upset - I never, NEVER meant to condemn you to this kind of life." Setsuna shook her head sadly. "My loyalties always have been and always should have been to you. I'm so sorry Usagi."
Usagi paused - another chance? The chance she had been praying and hoping for? The chance to change her miserable future? "Will I have my memories of what is to come?"
Setsuna shook her head. "You will not. Not even I can change that rule, but the most I can give you is a feeling of foreboding…listen to it and it will guide you."
Usagi hadn't expected anything less. "I'll do it."
"I know." Setsuna smiled. "I still know you princess, and I knew you would leap at any chance to leave this life behind, and your husband." She paused. "I'll take you back to where all the problems in the timeline began. Be forewarned, some things you cannot change, but do change what you can and always remember to be true to yourself, it is the only way to avoid this future." She cautioned.
Usagi closed her eyes as she felt herself start to careen backwards. She moved towards a new destiny…forward and back.
