Chapter 3 - Post Perfection
I remember the emotional ecstasy I experienced after that night and the days that followed.
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/FLASHBACK
Falling asleep in the coolness after the heat of Mugen's arms was a lot easier than sleeping with no comfort at all. As I lay in my last moments of consciousness I opened my eyes slowly to survey my surroundings, one last time. I saw my vagrant companion with his eyes wide, looking at me, making sure I slept. I closed my eyes...
The dream, for the first time in a long time, did not haunt me that night. I swear that in my subconscious I was wondering why. Wondering why I was having this peaceful sleep, wondering what I had done to deserve this one night of release. Was it Mugen's touch? His embrace?
Those answers didn't come as soon as they should of. I still had more time to ponder over the existence of the strange encounters that Mugen and I shared. In the morning I awoke to see Mugen, sitting in the same place as the night before, but with his eyes closed. The early dawn sunlight was starting to shine through the dark of his hair and it filtered on to my face. I sat up and put my glasses on. His eyes flitted open, red and dry. Fuu was still asleep.
I stayed there on my mat and toyed with the loose straw where the weaving had come undone while we made small talk and waited for Fuu to wake. It was strange that that young girl had almost complete control over us.
I saw a leaf in Mugen's hair and I subtly suggested to him that I was going to bathe in the stream. He stood up and I assumed he followed me to the water but when I disrobed and stepped in I noticed his absence. The water, lazily moving past my ankles was icy. I waded in slowly, savouring the feeling of the biting cold. I got in up to my waist and lowered myself in. Fuu still slept.
A sudden movement caught my attention and I snapped my head toward it. Mugen came dashing out from the shade of a tree, stark naked and leaped into the water. It splashed me in the face and water sprayed over to where we slept. Fuu stirred in her sleep and she sat up slowly, unaware of his actions. A sly grin crept across his face and I turned my back on her so she wouldn't see the smirk on my face as she turned to see what was happening. I knew the moment when she did realise though. Her shrill voice yelled out, ringing in the still air.
"Mugen! What are you playing at!? Oh OH! GET DRESSED!" She yelled again and I smiled. It reminded me vaguely of our first encounter in the hot spring. Except for the face that it was hot and sexy and without a harpee screaming on the sidelines.
Mugen dived under the water a few times and shook out his hair like an animal when he was satisfied with his bath. I got out also and started wringing out my hair when I heard Fuu yell again.
"Oh Jin... Not you too!" It was then that I realised that my underclothes had come off. Mugen's smile widened still while Fuu stood there, with her back to us as she shook her head. Mugen gave me a pat on the back and slung a lanky arm around my neck as the cool morning breeze dried us both.

I lagged behind on our trek to the next town. I thought about my dream and why it hadn't come to haunt me. Why had it broken its tradition? I could still see it as clear as day. The painful image of the dying look in Mugen's eyes...
I was lost in thought and a soft slap on my behind knocked me back into reality. Mugen rubbed his stubble with his long fingers and asked me if I was doing ok. Communication without words flowed between us and said what words could not. He stayed beside me as a shelter to all those things that could come and break me. The whole time I could sense Fuu's growing paranoia.
"I'm hungry." Mugen called out to her.
"Well we'll stop at the next food wagon." She called out, not because Mugen wanted her to, but because we could hear her stomach grumbling too.
As the afternoon rolled on, the sky darkened with rain clouds and a soft shower broke out. The soft shrieks from Fuu did nothing to calm me but the sound and smell of the rain, settled my mind a bit. It was at that period in time that I realised what I had become. A nervous wreck. I was disgusted in myself; I stooped down from my usually high pride to accept some sort of protection from my male companion. I quickened my pace and thought that some food would do me good. Mugen stayed at my side the whole time.

The rain was pouring harder than before while we sat under the cloth of the ramen stand. I ate my pork noodles and then I felt some sort of heat and strength return to my body. Fuu threw the food down her throat like some sort of beast and I looked at Mugen, expecting him to be doing the same thing but I was wrong. He sat there quietly on the other side of the girl, quietly eating his food. I noticed it was the same as mine and a weak smile crept across my face. He was amusing, even when he wasn't trying to be. I felt a warm feeling in my stomach.
The man that served us our food was watching us silently from behind the counter. He looked vaguely familiar but I assumed he was no one important.

On our search for shelter for the night, we got lucky. A group of thugs, wielding cheap katanas and daggers were terrorising the various customers of the inns. We usually keep out of that business but tonight they crossed our paths and did the same to us.
Mugen and I fought magnificently; back to back we sliced through the opponent as deadly and beautiful as any animal hunting its prey. We were the top of the food chain when we were together. The thugs lay in a pile of injured bodies and started dragging themselves away when a middle aged man wearing glasses ran out from the nearest inn. He wore expensive looking clothing and he definitely had money. He came up to us, panting slightly from a mixture of exertion and nervousness.
"Thankyou so very much my good sirs... and lady." He said when he saw the three of us back together.
"I'd like to offer you all shelter for the night for taking care of them for us." He nodded in the direction of the thugs.
"We've been having problems with them for a few nights now and now I don't think they'll come back. We can have one room for the lady and one room for the men and we also have outdoor hot springs you can use. All of this free of charge!"
"We'll take it!!" Fuu exclaimed and dragged us both in. We didn't see her for quite some time. The manager showed Mugen and I to our room and apologised for the one futon on the floor.
"I'm sorry sirs; I'll get one of our employees to get you another one right away." He looked a little nervous but Mugen put a hand on his shoulder and told him not to worry. Told him there was more than enough room for the both of us. He told him with such finality in his voice that the man didn't dare question him and as I took off my glasses and lay them on the stool, I saw the slightly blurry figure of the man's balding head as he bowed his way out of the door.
I knew what Mugen meant by his passive aggressive dismissal of the man. I scolded myself for thinking he would offer me some sort of protection without anything in return. My mind was too weak to fight him off so I readied myself for what, inevitably was a bout to happen.
I braced myself for his touch and when it came, my last shred of hope disappeared. His solid forearms wrapped around my neck and his breath was on my jaw. He planted a rough kiss on my cheek and I felt his perpetual stubble graze my own soft skin.
He pulled out my hair and it fell down to my waist. His long fingers started combing through it and I said nothing and I did nothing. He sensed my uneasiness and loosened his grip on me a bit. He then said something totally out of character and something I didn't expect.
"What's the matter? I'm not going to do anything you don't want. I'm here to protect you, you know that."
I swelled at his words and a burden of massive proportions evaporated into nothingness. I realised that in my state, to become truly happy I needed to experience a depression more than my usual feelings and then the ascension back to the equilibrium was ecstatic.
I turned around with a new strength and flung my arms around him. He was taken off guard and fell back onto our futon. Without thinking I planted my lips on his. My sheltered feelings became exposed, not just to him, but to me also and I realised that my respect for this man had turned into what I perceived as love.
"Let's have a bath. For old times sake." He managed to say from behind his grin.
"Yeah." I agreed.
