Back to the Beginning...Ch 2

*********************************************************** *

The hands of time can be a very fickle thing; one moment it is yourbest ally while another moment boasts it as a hated enemy. Time was not in Sonic's favor during this moment...and his son would soon realize the horrible truth of his condition...

"He can't what?!"

"I am as suprised as I was when I first saw this injury, but its no mistaking the seriousness of it, Michael will not be running anymore..." A sorrowful doctor explained to a stunned Sonic. "The injury seems to have been caused by repeated overexertion."

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Sonic demanded, his perplexed look told it all.

"Your son ran his legs out. See these X-rays? Those legs moved so quickly that Michael opened a stress fracture on both sides of his femer. I'm afraid that this kind of injury is going to take a good 8 months to heal completely. That, however, is only if he doesn't run at all; knowing his fast-paced nature, he might get the urge to run like he always does, but this could cause even more damage to the femer, quite possibly paralyzing him from the waist down." The doctor explained to a teary-eyed Sonic.

"This can't...be." Sonic fell to the floor on his tousch, unable to comprehend what this handicap would do to Michael's moral and sense of adventure. "What if Robotnick plans another..." Sonic thought for a moment but quickly replaced that notion with the realization that he hadf always managed to defeat Robotnick and his crazy cohorts and whatever they had managed to concock against him.

"I advise that you keep Michael's lower body on close watch, Sonic, for any furthur damage to that femer might paralyze him from the waist down." The doctor warned Sonic, getting a slow nod from the blue hedgehog. "I do have good news, however, [No, he did not save on his car insurance by switching to Geico XD~~] I can make a walking device to help him move some, but not much. This will only help him walk to and from places, not run." The doctor motioned to Sonic to follow him.

Sonic listened to the doctor and watched as he looked around for a few seconds then moved a brown book entitled "War and Peace with Hedgehogs and the like". After doing so, a set of stairs formed, leading down into a hidden labratory [reminds you of Dexter, eh?]. After the stairs disappered, Sonic was shwon a set of mechanical legs about the size of a hedgehog's legs.

"This will help your son get to and from places, but I made them to handle extremely low amounts of stress, so he can't run with them or they'll collapse on him, possibly furthur aggrivating his injury." The doctor explained as he carefully picked the mechanical legs up from their suspended position and led Sonic back upstairs into Michael's room. "Lets just attach these like so..." The doctor gently placed the pieces of the device onto Michael's legs, fitting them perfectly on him.

Sonic smiled at the doctor, happy that his son would be moving somewhat. "Well, thats better then nothing." Sonic said to himself as the doctor had finished attaching the two legs to Michael.

"Now, to wake him up, hope he isn't a heavy sleeper." The doctor chuckled as he tapped Michael on the shoulders, his orange eyelids opening slightly, his pure emerald-green eyes looking at his father, Sonic.

"Dad? What happened to me?" Michael said, perplexed as any hedgehog would be in his condition.

"Well, the doctor here can explain it better then I can." Sonic notioned to the doctor, who nodded and sat down next to Michael, telling the whole reason why he was there.

"...and thats pretty much what happened to your legs."

Michael's jaw dropped after hearing this, realizing immediately that his running would be hampered greatly. "You mean that I can't...run anymore?" Michael was about to burst into tears at the doctors' nodding. "This can't...be! I-I can't go without running! It's m-m-my life!" Michael stuttered as the tears of anger and frustration began to make their way out of the young hedgehog's enerald eyes.

"I feel the same way, son, I really do, the doctor said that you can't run for about 8 months because your femer needs time to heal itself." Sonic said with a tear in his eye, gently holding Michael's right leg.

"I'll leave you two alone for a bit so you can talk about this..." the doctor whispered to Sonic as the blue hedgehog nodded. The doctor left the room with just father and son in there.

"...I'm just glad that you're alive." Sonic said, tears starting to stream forth from his emerald eyes.

"...Where's everyone else?" Michael asked, Sonic's eyes suddenly shooting open as he realized what he had forgotten.

"Oh shit, they don't know yet!"
