Disclaimer: I don't own the title of this fic, as it was used in Sonic Adventure DX before. I do own the various Chao presented in the story, including Sparky, Krost, Shade, etc. Any similarities to Chao in the real world are purely coincidental.

Imagine if the friendly Chao creatures that humans loved so much - small, playful beings with berry shaped heads and the ability to transform into numerous other variations of its species as they age - weren't so friendly after all. Imagine a world where Chao were at war with each other, with Hero Chao battling against the spreading forces of Dark Chao. And imagine if only one Chao could turn the tides of this struggle due to a weird twist of fate during his childhood.
This is the story of a young Chao named Sparky. By the time of his birth, both Hero and Dark Chao have resorted to recruiting practically any Chao they can find, often forcibly. And the Dark Chao leader, a Devil-Chao named Shade, has a slight head start over the Hero Chao in the search for Sparky…

- August 1, 2005 -
Down in a meadow on the planet Earth, there are three Chao playing together. One is a white-and-yellow Hero-Swimming Chao, with otter-like feet and small wings. The second is a white-and-red Hero-Power Chao, with gorilla arms and ears. The third is their son, a normal-colored child Chao - “normal” means that he is mostly sky blue with yellowish tints on his hands, feet, and the tip of his head.
At the moment, the three couldn't be enjoying themselves more. The young Chao's parents chase their son around for fun, surprised yet proud of his impressive running speed for someone his age. The chase eventually leads to a nearby forest, and the child decides to rush into it. Not far in, something catches his eye, and he stops. What he sees is a small rectangular prism, floating in the air, and shining bright green. His parents eventually catch up, and they also stop in their tracks, dumbstruck by this strange object. The child chooses to get closer to the object, but when he gets too close, the young Chao begins to sparkle, and the green prism disappears in a flash.
However, the rather mysterious atmosphere of the area doesn't last too long. A massive shadow suddenly overcomes the entire area. The three Chao hightail it out of the woods, only to spot a giant purple battleship flying right above them. It begins to hover closer and closer to the planet's surface. The three Chao on the ground are petrified by the sight of such an object, as none of them have ever seen a ship like this. Before any of them can react, a large beam shoots out of the battleship's underbelly and strikes near the parents, causing an explosion on the ground and killing them almost instantly. The child is now horrified at seeing the dead bodies of his parents lying right in front of him. What's worse, a smaller black craft then ejects out of the big ship and floats down to him. As the craft approaches, a devilish-looking figure becomes visible inside the cockpit. The young Chao doesn't know what to do, so he merely whimpers in his place.
Then out of the blue, another similar looking craft, but glowing gold, flies in and attempts to shoot down the devilish figure. Some of his shots connect, thrusting the black craft in to the nearby woods, far away from the young Chao. No damage seems to be inflicted, however. The gold-glowing ship then lands close to the child, and a hatch on the side opens up. A few seconds later, an angelic figure quickly steps out and rushes to him.
“Quickly, come with me. I have to get you out of here,” it says.
But the young Chao doesn't move, still frightened by what's going on around him. So the angelic figure grabs his arm and pulls him into the gold craft. The hatch closes and the ship starts to fly again. Seeing that its mission is being compromised, the large battleship above wildly opens fire, but the smaller ship escapes unscathed and begins flying out of the planet's atmosphere.
----------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------
As for the young Chao that was just rescued from the Dark Chao battleship, he is being safely kept inside a small passenger section of the golden fighter, which is big enough to only fit around ten adult Chao. Right next to this room is the cockpit. The door opens, and the angelic figure, known as an Angel Chao - an immortal being with a faint halo above his head, as well as pink hands and feet - enters to speak with the child.
“Hello. Nice to meet you.”
The young Chao merely remains silent, with a sad look on his face. Seeing this, the Angel Chao tries to get his attention.
“I apologize if all of this looks strange to you, but I had no choice. If I hadn't stopped that other fighter and taken you away, you would've been killed.”
The child whimpers again, still staying silent. He looks like he is trying to hold back some tears.
“I'm sorry, but I was too late. Shade and his crew got there before me. I saw that explosion from a distance, but judging from its power, your parents most likely died before I could set down.”
“But, why? Why Mom? And Dad?” the child mutters softly.
The Angel Chao then sits down next to him. “This may take a bit of time to explain, but it's the only way to answer any questions you have. You are probably unaware of this, but there is a big war going on between Hero Chao and Dark Chao in outer space. Yes, where we are right now. The Dark Chao were the ones that wished to suppress the powers of Hero Chao, and even after months of negotiations from them, we resisted without fail. Seeing that we would not succumb to their demands, the Dark Chao declared war against all Hero Chao and neutral Chao who prefer to side with us.
“By now, both sides of the conflict have already resorted to recruiting any and every Chao possible. However, knowing that the number of Hero Chao is growing faster and faster every day, the Dark Chao have also chosen to kill any neutral Chao that they feel are a threat to them, such as the offspring of other Hero Chao. That's where I come in. It is my job to stop any Dark Chao trying to do just that, and see that the new recruits find asylum with the HCA.”
“HCA?” the child asked, confused at what the Angel Chao meant.
“HCA stands for `Hero Chao Army'. That's the name of the group of Hero Chao gathered together to cease the carnage of Dark Chao, headed by Shade. Shade is a type of being, like myself, that possesses immortality. He is known as a Devil Chao, and he founded the DCA, or `Dark Chao Army'. He contains many powers of darkness, while I have light powers in contrast.”
“Oh, and just in case you are wondering why this ship appears to glow gold from the outside, it is because of a special light power I used on it, which protects it from any sort of damage. Shade apparently used a similar dark power on his ship back on Earth, so I was only able to repel his craft, not destroy it. Fortunately, that gave me enough time to save you.”
“Sir, this is too confusing,” the child mentions, interrupting the Angel Chao.
“Well, sure, it is complicated, but you wanted to know what's going on. We have strongholds all over the planet and in space, but the main HCA base is located on the Moon. Come with me into the cockpit, and I'll show you where we're headed.”
The two Chao then stand up and walk into the next room: the cockpit. Inside is a complex set of controls, as well as a large viewing window. The Moon, currently in its waning crescent stage, can be clearly seen way in the distance, along with a large group of mysterious specks trailing far to its left and right.
“Cool, right?” the Angel Chao says.
“Pretty.”
“That's where this ship is heading. I have it on automatic pilot control, so it'll send itself straight towards our destination, without me needing to pilot it myself.”
The child notices something strange about the Moon and asks the Angel Chao about it: “But, why is a part of the Moon missing?”
“That `missing piece of the Moon', as you call it, is a crater, and it was caused by a space station created over fifty years ago by a human genius. The grandson of that genius destroyed part of the Moon several years ago as a demonstration of power, but he was overthrown the next day. The leftover fragments from that event have formed a type of asteroid belt and are now orbiting continuously around Earth at about the same distance as the Moon.”
“What will I be doing with you and the other Hero Chao?” the young Chao asks.
The Angel Chao turns toward the child. “If you so desire, you'll help us fight and defeat the Dark Chao. Their forces are spreading, both in space and on Earth, and if they aren't stopped, they will eventually become powerful enough to destroy all Hero Chao with ease.”
“But I can't fight.”
“Oh, you'll soon learn how. You'll definitely want to when you find that numerous Dark Chao are ready to kill you. And wouldn't you be upset if you finally came face to face with the Chao that murdered you parents?”
The child thinks about what the Angel Chao just mentioned, and after a minute of thought, he gives a response: “Sir, I see what you mean now, and I want to end this war. I'll do anything to stop the Dark Chao. I don't want anyone else to end up like Mom and Dad.”
The Angel Chao smiles upon hearing the child's words. “That's the spirit! By the way, I forgot to ask your name.”
“I'm Sparky.”
The Angel Chao shakes Sparky's hand. “It's a pleasure having met you, Sparky. I'm Krost, leader of the HCA. Don't forget, once we reach headquarters, you will be registered, given a quick tour, and then start your training. It's not going to be easy, but if you succeed, you may get a chance to battle the Dark Chao that you wish to stop so much.”
