Author's Notes:

I had an idea for a plot for this story. I hope it works. Also, I hope to post some pictures of Metalporygon soon. For now, you'll just have to imagine. I've got another interesting thing to think about: Eggman and Maria are both grandchildren of Gerald Robotnik, which means that they are probably brother and sister. But then, when was Eggman born? Was he on the ARK before it was shutdown? If so, then he must've known about Maria and Shadow; unless he was an infant. Grrrr...my brain hurts. Yet another example of the "psychological mind-bending" that I talked about in the summary. Anyway, here's chapter 3.

Chapter 3--The Professor's Last Stand

Metalporygon had been flying for a while now, not really towards any destination, just keeping on

the go so that the press couldn't catch up. Siruis was in the pilot's seat, which was used mostly during

the times that Metalporygon was either idle, or transporting him to somewhere. In most combat situations,

Siruis would use a holographic projection pad attached to the floor in the middle of the cockpit. Doing

so enabled him to use a virtual reality uplink which, when combined with the neural scanners in his helmet,

allowed him to precise and instant instructions to Metalporygon. At this particular moment, however, the

cockpit seemed rather crowded and Sonic had stumbled his way onto the pad, causing a holographic

projection to surround Sonic and follow his movements. (To get a good idea of what I'm talking about,

watch the scene in the movie "Lost In Space" where Will uses a holographic projection to remotely control

the robot.) Since he didn't have the VR gear on, however, Metalporygon did not react to Sonic's

movements. It still looked rather odd, causing Amy to giggle and nearly burst out laughing. Sonic, who

was unaware of the projection, couldn't figure out what was so funny. And in the process of searching for

the problem, he looked even weirder and, well, Amy couldn't take it anymore. She laughed so hard, she fell

on the floor--which didn't stop her as she continued to laugh while standing back up again and wiping here

eyes, which had become watery due to her outburst. Oddly enough, no one else seemed to notice; with the

exception of Rouge, who couldn't help but chuckle as she continued her examination of one of the wall

panels at the back of the cockpit. Shadow and Knuckles were on the other side of the holo-pad. They were

discussing the chaos emeralds--more particularly, chaos control. Eggman was doing some maintenance on

his Egg Walker. (which, along with Tails's walker, had managed to fit into the cockpit--which had about as

much room as two of the trailers that are pulled by semi-trucks.) Tails was sitting the co-pilot's seat, which

seemed to have no reason for existing, but it was there, nonetheless. He was admiring the complicated-

looking arrangement of controls and displays, (or rather, in awe of them) when one of them started to beep

and flash loudly, displaying an 'ALERT!' message.

"What's that?" asked the inquisitive little fox. Mistaking his question for yet another 'what's this

for?' one, Siruis responded:

"That's a--(realizing what Tail's was talking about)--an...emergency alert!" Quickly, he asked,

"Metalporygon, what's with the alert? Display the cause on the secondary viewscreen." Instantly, a face

appeared on a large monitor toward the front of the cockpit, just above the window-like visor on

Metalporygon's head. The face was none other than that of Professor Gerald Robotnik. Everyone stopped

what they were doing and watched the screen. Recognizing the Professor, Amy let out a shrill "oh no" as

she hid behind Sonic again. Eggman paid particular attention to his grandfather's image.

After a moment, the fuzzy recording of the insane Professor Robotnik began to move. the same

eerie voice from the ARK then said: "If you are watching this, then the Earth has either not been hit by the

ARK, or my calculations were off, and the damage was not great enough to wipe out humanity. Either way,

this recording survived, which means that you will not. At the end of this message, the timer will be set on

a large package of explosives that are very near the Earth's core. Humanity has 24 hours to contemplate its

fate; to suffer over the loss of your loved ones, as I have done for Maria. As I have said before, all of you

ungrateful humans, who took everything away from me, will feel my loss, and despair. I assume that my

ultimate life form failed, since you are still alive. I find that hard to believe, but it doesn't matter now. I

will destroy you myself. Goodbye."

The message had been heard around the world, overriding all frequencies in the same manner that

the message from the ARK had done. People were panicking. Utter chaos was visible in the streets. 2 plus

2 equaled 5. Babies cried...some more. Other villains were jealous. And aboard Metalporygon, everyone

was speechless. The mood was silent, yet electric with tension. After nearly an entire minute of without

anything happening, Shadow fell to his knees, his head in his hands; holding back the tears and trying to

hide his misery.

"Maria...I've failed you." He said quietly. Suddenly, he felt anger rush through his veins.

"No...I...will keep my promise." Standing back up, he continued: "I must destroy all the evil that the

professor has created. I--We...must find a way to prevent the explosion, as well as any other traps that the

professor may have set."

After a moment, Rouge asked--in a more serious tone than normal--"Okay, but just how are we

supposed to do that? I mean, if there is a way to get to the bomb, then where is it? And how would we

shutdown the explosives without detonating them? Not to mention the fact that we only have less than 24

hours to do it all in."

"All very good questions. We might be able to dig a tunnel to the bomb, but that would take

forever." Knuckles responded, frustrated.

Tails then looked over in Knuckles's direction and said, "Maybe not..." he then turned to face

Siruis, and added: "...Hey, do you think this thing can find the bomb, and dig a tunnel to it?"

Siruis thought for a moment. He wanted to help, but he didn't want to interfere unless it was

absolutely necessary. He didn't want anyone to get used to his help. "Sure it can, and it wouldn't take too

long. At least, it wouldn't if I had Metalporygon use a laser as a drill, and burn a hole that leads to the

bomb. Problem is, It'd be too small for Metalporygon to fit through. We'd have to go in without him."

Sonic smirked and, in his 'bring it on' tone, said, "If it means savin' the planet, then it's a risk I'm

willing to take! Besides, I could use some exercise!"

A wide-eyed Amy hugged him tightly, nearly gagging Sonic to death, while shouting, "MY

HERO!!"

"Amy,...*cough!*...Would you stop trying to...*GAG!*...break me in two??!!" Sonic managed to

choke out. Everyone laughed while she finally let go of the poor blue hedgehog, who fell to his hands and

knees, gasping for air.

"I say we go for it." Knuckles toned in. Everyone else agreed, and watched Siruis as he made the

necessary modifications to Metalporygon, instructing him to not only find the bomb and make the hole, but

also to keep the temperature in the pit manageable.

"Okay, it's all ready." Siruis said upon completion of the modifications.

After scanning for and locating the bomb, Metalporygon picked up something else. Apparently,

there was a complex of rooms and equipment that led to the bomb. The complex was directly between them

and the bomb, so the decision was made to drill down to the roof of the top level of the complex, and save

time. The group planned to simply use what appeared to be a stairwell to get down to the bomb.

Metalporygon held its hand out slightly, and a brilliant orb of light appeared at the tip of its finger. The orb

grew in size, until it finally released its energy into the Earth. The laser disintegrated everything in front of

it, leaving behind a trail of a special kind metal that would keep the hole from collapsing. After a few

seconds, the laser stopped after burning a hole in the roof of the complex. The metal coating would also

keep the temperature of the pit below about 112 degrees Farenheight. Siruis equipped some special battle

armor, just in case, and was transported to the ground next to the mouth of the hole, along with the rest of

the Sonic crew.

"Well, here we go!" Sonic yelled.
